461324, Remakes Superior to the originals?
Posted by k_orr, Wed Jul-08-09 01:55 PM
This is an oldie but goodie, but a remake of a film that's better than the OG version.

Can include foreign to domestic conversions.

Despite little creepy touches here and there with the imagery, such as the more grotesque faces of the victims, for me the real clincher was the scene when the little kid (spoiler) says to his mom towards the end "you helped her?" I just found that a really creepy moment, when you thought that it was just another "see, the ghost just wanted help solving its murder" wimpy horror movies, and it totally screws with that expectation.
461371, fuck that the original is way better

the remake with Jimmy Stewart and Doris Day is way better.

461398, I don't know about superior, but I prefer the new Taking Pelham 123
Posted by Wordman, Wed Jul-08-09 07:40 PM
I suppose that's just more of a preference thing, they're both pretty good.

461509, I liked the original better

461542, yeah, I go back and forth
Posted by Wordman, Thu Jul-09-09 01:05 PM
I'm a huge Martin Balsam fan, so that gets my vote.
But I really do like the acting work in the new one.
It's really just a preference thing with this one, I don't think either is better per se.

It's kind of startling how bad most remakes are.
461531, Tough one, but I'll say this: the remake is more fun.
Posted by stylez dainty, Thu Jul-09-09 12:22 PM
It's so over the top that you can have a good time watching it. I was surprised how legitimately creepy the original is.

And the separate releases are out of print.

So more and more people will discover the 1934 version, which is good in its own right, but not on the level of the Lana Turner/Juanita Moore/Susan Kohner version.

remake was closer to the book, and didn't have the cheesy ass songs. And Johnny Depp played Wonka better than Gene Wilder.....

Especially to pick out Depp ahead of Wilder. Wilder was on a higher plain with that performance.
468036, Closer to the book?

That alone might give the original film the nod.

I follow. I just wasn't sure if there was a previous musical version, since I remember the original to be more of a weird horror thing. If it was a comedy, I was too young to realize that when i saw it.

Rick Moranis should savor this post forever.
