417119, Better story? It's Ocean's 11 meets Mr. and Mrs. Smith
Posted by SoulHonky, Wed Nov-26-08 07:40 PM
The story looks about as stale as Clive Owen's other new film The International or IMO Michael Clayton.

What elevated Michael Clayton was that it was an art house version of The Firm so it had deeper characters and better monologues. This film doesn't look like it has either. It looks like a standard heist movie.
417205, *smh*
Posted by dunk, Thu Nov-27-08 03:26 PM
cause Mr. & Mrs. Smith was a groundbreaking story we've never seen before. imo the story looks more interesting. I thought Michael Clayton was really good. agree to disagree i guess
417149, It looks & will be better than Derailed. I'll give it that much.
Posted by jigga, Wed Nov-26-08 11:08 PM
417164, i do not like that woman
Posted by Basaglia, Thu Nov-27-08 12:52 AM
417195, The trailer makes it look terrible
Posted by Rolo_Tomasi, Thu Nov-27-08 01:41 PM
I won't be seeing this unless a second trailer makes it looks 100% better.
417197, Most overrated bitch in Hollywood. I'd rather watch Tara Reid.

417206, lol i didn't know PTP hated her
Posted by dunk, Thu Nov-27-08 03:27 PM
im fine with Julia Roberts. She's nothing amazing but i like her performances.
417218, Will see it off the strength of Michael Clayton.

417482, Clive Owen, Tom Wilkinson, Paul Giamatti, Julia Roberts, Tony Gilroy

and people are straight hating?

Ooookay.

Julia Roberts stole your high school boyfriend? Wouldn't put out for you?

417486, I think Michael Clayton is overrated
Posted by SoulHonky, Sun Nov-30-08 01:06 AM
A solid enough film with a couple of top notch scenes but overall nothing all that amazing and not worthy of the praise that some people are heaping on it (like a top 100 movie of all time and shit).

417488, but who calls it a top 100 movie?
Posted by dunk, Sun Nov-30-08 01:21 AM
i've never heard that. plus, Juno got a best pic nod last year. They screwed up a couple of times last year the nods so you can't be mad that a good movie like this got more love than it normally would
417519, RE: but who calls it a top 100 movie?

YES HE CAN!!!

I'll see it on the strengths of all the other actors tho
417529, I just wasn't that impressed
Posted by SoulHonky, Sun Nov-30-08 02:13 PM
I didn't think Juno was the amazing film that people made it out to be either but that doesn't make it better than Clayton got overrated as well.

And it wasn't top 100 all time, my bad. It was a new classic by EW, top 100 since '83 but I shouldn't be citing Entertainment Weekly at all since they are usually full of shit.

I hate Mr. and Mrs. Smith, terrible film.

Duplicity Looks interesting tho. I plan on checking it out.
441555, Is niggas sleeping on Closer or what?
Posted by Mafamaticks, Wed Mar-18-09 06:51 AM
Clive and julia killed that shit
441558, The idea of Julia Roberts trynna play 'sexy' is laughable to me.
Posted by Orfeo_Negro, Wed Mar-18-09 08:42 AM
And a little gross.
441612, Pretty Woman?
Posted by zionites16, Wed Mar-18-09 03:18 PM
> And a little gross.

She was sexy enough for that role (at the time) I thought...

You don't find her attractive at times?

Posted by spades, Thu Apr-23-09 10:31 AM
And truth be told, she wasn't sexy then, just young.
441597, Saw it at the press screening last week...
Posted by DeeKay, Wed Mar-18-09 01:57 PM
It's really good, fun in the vein of the Oceans movies. Very enjoyable to watch, the two leads had great chemistry and it was actually consistently pretty funny.

Oh and I forgot to mention that the trailer is no indication of how good the film is. Based on the trailer I had no real interest in seeing the film, but it far surpassed my expectations.
441637, Interesting...Thanks for that.
Posted by ActWon, Wed Mar-18-09 05:44 PM
441638, I've started to warm up to it
Posted by Arch Stanton, Wed Mar-18-09 05:49 PM
Got a really good review in the Village Voice. I thought Michael Clayton was overrated, but a decent enough movie. Closer was pretty good too.

May be worth a rental. Or if the lady wants to see it, make her go see Gomorrah in exchange.
441949, Really fun, very enjoyable.
Posted by ZooTown74, Thu Mar-19-09 10:32 PM
It was a nice throwback to them ol' comedies of the 30's and 40's... gotta see it again, though, I was a bit confused by the plotting, though you certainly understand the main beats...

I bought both Julio and Shoulda-Been-Bond as the leads, Tom Wilkinson was good once again, Giamatti was funny, and I also liked the chick who played a crucial role early on as someone Clive has to get intel from...

Even though I sat in a suck-ass seat for the free screening, it looked great... wasn't quite fond of the score, however...

Bottom line is, I don't give a fuck about how bad/good Julio Robertz looks, or how much bread this movie pulls in this weekend, Tony Gilroy wins again.

442053, Light, fun, mildly predictable con flick. Good for dates.
Posted by Frank Longo, Fri Mar-20-09 03:18 PM
The comedy got tired after a bit... "You don't trust me?" "Well, you don't trust me either!" Har har har. Still, Gilroy keeps the dialogue fresh, and it's well-handled.

More than the leads, I enjoyed the chick Zoo was referring to, and Denis O'Hare doing always fantastic supporting work. Giamatti and Wilkinson lend proper weight to their roles.

The chemistry's good. I'm sure folks will like it, and it does have a throwback vibe to it. Gilroy is showing he can handle multiple genres-- great for his career. A light, disposable date flick, good for spring.
442140, oh no....i liked it

442229, i fuckin hate julia roberts
Posted by the sway, Sun Mar-22-09 08:51 AM
but really enjoyed this movie. gilroy has a knack for writing entertaining movies about the corporate world
442267, it was enjoyable a light heist movie *slightly spoilerish*
Posted by SankofaII, Sun Mar-22-09 04:17 PM
julia and clive were good (is there something in the damn water in britain? how does he manage to look so good in his mid 40s? really?)

but the supporting characters were the best..tom wilkinson, paul giamatti, carrie preston (arlene from true blodd was hilarious as the woman clive dug out to get intel from), and the director of The Visitor, The Station Agent--the Stephen Glass reporter from the final season of The Wire forget his name...

the supporting characters were great....

*****SPOILER ALERT!!! SPOILER ALERT!!*****

the ending was kinda blah for me (I was expecting and hoping they'd get away with the money....)

it was good
442286, It was fine.
Posted by SoulHonky, Sun Mar-22-09 05:51 PM
Gilroy's dialogue is always good but the movie dragged for me. And he really needs to quit it with the playing with chronology. It didn't add anything here (and could have been used better).

Decent enough. Nothing special.

Yeah, I like the guy's work. And even if I didn't, I'd still say this is a good read:
