381205, Another set of film lists to chew on: AFI's 10 Top 10
Posted by ZooTown74, Mon Jun-23-08 08:10 PM
(a series that I totally forgot to vote on)

So, this is where the AFI peoples rank the 10 best films in 10 different genres: Animation, Romantic Comedy, Western, Sports, Mystery, Fantasy, Sci-Fi, Gangster, Courtroom Drama, and Epic

I'm going to list each list as its own post, so that people can feel free to shit on each category individually. Kidding!

So with that, here we go:

Posted by JMD, Mon Jun-23-08 08:23 PM
I don't know how I feel about the top three and how there are not any Miyazaki(is that how you spell it?) What was the judging criteria?
381238, I think they're going strictly for American films.
Posted by Nukkapedia, Mon Jun-23-08 09:14 PM
Correct me if I'm wrong, though.
381250, Hmmm
Posted by JungleSouljah, Mon Jun-23-08 10:23 PM
I don't have problems with that list. I would have liked to have seen an addition of Iron Giant or The Incredibles (Brad Bird needs to be somewhere on that list). I'm not sure about Snow White at #1. I'm not even sure if it'd be in my top 10. I realize it's importance but it's just not one of my favorites.
381262, I'd take off Snow White and Shrek and squeeze Aladdin and

The Incredibles in
381518, I completely forgot Shrek was on there
Posted by JungleSouljah, Tue Jun-24-08 07:39 PM
And I was thinking about adding Aladdin too but I think I'd rather see Iron Giant and The Incredibles.

I'm still salty over the bullshit treatment that Ratatouille continues to get. Yes it's a rat in a kitchen movie, but it's a great rat in a kitchen movie.
381528, Ratatouille is great, but it's too new to determine it's worth.
Posted by Nukkapedia, Tue Jun-24-08 08:45 PM
And Iron Giant is great too, but its status as an unfortunately relatively unknown "cult film" keeps me from putting it in a Top 10 list. Be that as it may, I might swap it for "Incredibles" on any given day. It all depends.
381207, Romantic Comedy

381235, A genre that isn't really even a genre
Posted by DrNO, Mon Jun-23-08 09:05 PM
381253, No real surprises in the top 7
Posted by JungleSouljah, Mon Jun-23-08 10:27 PM
I'm somewhat surprised that Field of Dreams was left off, although I'm not overly familiar with the last 3. I'm saddened by the lack of football, but I can't even think of one that really deserves a mention.

Maybe Friday Night Lights?

The Longest Yard?

Brian's Song?

I dunno.
381310, It doesn't fit the AFI definition of a sports movie
Posted by SoulHonky, Tue Jun-24-08 01:35 AM
Costner isn't an athlete or taking place in a competition.
381521, But you could argue that there are other protagonists that do
Posted by JungleSouljah, Tue Jun-24-08 07:52 PM
I know we're splitting hairs thanks to our friends at the AFI but if Field of Dreams isn't a sports movie, then what genre is it?
381341, no "Longest Yard"? *throws this list in the trash*

9. The Thief of Baghdad
10. Big

basically.
381259, I would have added The Matrix
Posted by JungleSouljah, Mon Jun-23-08 10:38 PM
but I'm not entirely sure what I'd remove from the list. And I'd definitely consider switching Empire for New Hope.

I should really see the original Invasion of the Bodysnatchers. I've seen the 70s remake and the one from last year. I wonder if 'zombie' movies are considered Sci-Fi.... if so, switch Night of the Living Dead or Dawn of the Dead for Invasion?
381309, I would put 12 Monkeys on there
Posted by sosa, Tue Jun-24-08 01:33 AM
maybe take out or move Blade Runner.
381351, no to star wars
Posted by The Goldng Child, Tue Jun-24-08 09:33 AM
i personally consider star wars to fit in the fantasy category since most of its premises don't have any kind of bearing on technology or physics (real or imagined). i'm a bit surprised none of the star trek movies got a nod, but not terribly so.

381311, Agreed.
Posted by SoulHonky, Tue Jun-24-08 01:37 AM
It's one of those films that a lot of people said was great because it was so campy & over-the-top and suddenly people started to actually believe that it was a great movie.

Believe the Shame of Nation was is the 1930's Scarface

Edit:

381260, Is Pulp Fiction a gangster movie?
