380356, Powerful insider followup: Who will fall harder?
Posted by B9, Fri Jun-20-08 07:56 AM
The laughable M Dogg or the laughable Hulkster? Who's box is shrinking faster than Basa's grasp of reality?

I got the Sham dropping 70%; that word of mouth is powerfully bad.
380393, The Happening is going to fall harder
Posted by calij81, Fri Jun-20-08 10:46 AM
I think the Hulk will remain at number one as the competition isn't very tough this week.

Have you seen that Love Guru review post? Sounds terrible and I don't think people, especially young people think Mike Myers is funny anymore.

That said, I see the Hulk coming in at one and The Happening no better than third.

Positive word of mouth will help the Hulk, as I think a lot of people who were disappointed in the first one waited the weekend out to hear friend and family reviews before seeing it. While the Happening will be hurt by negative word of mouth.
380397, I'm scared about Marvel's future, for real.

They pissed off Norton, so Hulk 2 with him looks unlikely. Reports are they're unwilling to pay Favreau for Iron Man 2, and Downey Jr. is tight with him, so Iron Man 2 looks a ways away at this point. God only knows what'll happen to this Avengers flick that I'm so fucking ready for after this summer.

They need to man up, apologize to Norton and beg him to come back, pay Favreau, and get this shit done right.
380403, I agree with all of this
Posted by calij81, Fri Jun-20-08 11:09 AM

>They need to man up, apologize to Norton and beg him to come

Although I think they could get away with changing Norton out for someone else. The Hulk to me, at least for people who see the Hulk in theaters are more interested in seeing the Hulk smashing shit and fighting than Banner on screen.

Ironman needs Favreau and it really needs RDJ, as you said, if RDJ is that close to Favreau and he isn't the director than that will complicate things to the point where he might not even do the film.
380429, I agree with this

Yeah I dont know if there's an ideal actor to play Banner. I liked what Bana did more than Norton but I wouldn't miss either 1 of em if another new guy stepped in.

Yep. I'm not really interested in the sequel unless both guys come back. Especially RDJ.
380406, um, I don't think they are doing sequels to those
Posted by B9, Fri Jun-20-08 11:22 AM
My impression was they were going to do origin stories for the other key Avengers (Nic Fury, Cap. America, Ant Man (I'm assuming a straight up comedy, how else can you pull that off?)) maybe even a villan or two, then one big huge Avengers movie. Meanwhile, the Wolverine and Magneto movies, the Silver Surfer movie, etc...
But their Avengers plan makes me think they inked the headline stars of the origin movies to be in the main one (and continue to make cameos in others). They are making a very low-risk gamble putting out all these origin movies that bank huge: even if the Avengers movie/(series?) doesnt come off, they'll have a back log of big money films that promise the worlds greatest never-made sequel.

Meanwhile, Sony paid Marvel for the rights to Spiderman and there is a script being kicked around, god knows why or who will want to go through the motions with it.
380410, the sequel to Iron Man was announced the monday after it opened
Posted by navajo joe, Fri Jun-20-08 11:27 AM
to be released summer 2010

a movie makes that much money, it is getting a sequel

the story is whether they do the right thing and make favreau happy monetarily/creatively. which is up in the air right now
380420, If they make Ant Man an espionage flick it will succeed!
Posted by BLACK_ADAM, Fri Jun-20-08 11:52 AM
"Pym Particles" are tech. The AntMan "tech" has plenty of military applications as would the Gi-ant Man "tech"....

Just let that marinate some and you'll see why it won't have to be a comedy to be successful.

380411, Marvel needs to realize that quality = longevity
Posted by buckshot defunct, Fri Jun-20-08 11:27 AM
They're fortunate in that their characters are established enough properties that superhero X will always make at least Y amount of dollars... However.

The reason they were able to come out of the gate so strong with these first 2 flicks is the talent. It's weird that they didn't try to hem up Favreau with a 3-picture deal. Maybe they did, and he declined. In any event now his rate has gone up and they probably just need to suck it up and pay the man.

Thing with Marvel Studios is that they're gonna want to keep their product out there, which is understandable, but they might do so at the cost of quality. They're announcing a release date for Iron Man 2 and there's no script yet (which I find even more worrisome than the possibility of no Favreau)... I'd love to see them take their time on projects, choose the right scripts and the right people... You know, make themselves the Pixar of superhero flicks or something. But they might not be in a financial situation where they can take that route even if they wanted to...

We'll see.

380418, Exhibit B: clownshoe MEGA clusterfuck called "Spiderman 3"
Posted by calij81, Fri Jun-20-08 11:51 AM
380421, same prinicple, yes
Posted by buckshot defunct, Fri Jun-20-08 11:54 AM
But let's just note that the X Men and Spider-Man movies were handled by other studios licensing Marvel characters.

Marvel Studios began with Iron Man. The idea now is that (barring characters they've already licensed out) for their future film projects, all the risk, all the money, and all the *control* will be theirs and theirs alone.

So if they fuck this up, it's their own damn fault.

380503, the Marvel / Favreau dispute supposedly is hype
Posted by REDeye, Fri Jun-20-08 04:41 PM
so says Nikki Finke in a post last week. The first made a ton of money and everyone wants a raise. Marvel knows this and also knows they need to get Favreau and Downey on board.

Favraeu himself said that Iron Man 2 was announced and he had yet to have Marvel Studios contact him or RD jr. He also said that even if he was on board that a 2010 release date was very unlikely.

380524, How did the piss off Norton?
Posted by El_Pistolero, Fri Jun-20-08 05:38 PM
380596, they didnt let him have final cut (minor extras spoiler)
Posted by B9, Sat Jun-21-08 08:34 AM
there were something like 30 minutes of stuff they cut that was really dark, inluding a scene where he tried to kill himself. Marvel thought it was both too long and too dark for a pg13, it will supposedly be on the dvd.
380528, They didn't lock him up for a sequel already?
Posted by bignick, Fri Jun-20-08 05:56 PM
380626, It's pretty ridiculous, but yeah, he ain't locked up.
