378081, Top Chef Chicago FINALE
Posted by Marauder21, Wed Jun-11-08 08:22 PM
Fuck it, that other OTHER post is too long. And besides, the finale deserves to be treated special.

Will Stephanie become the first female TC? Will Lisa shock and disgust all by somehow winning it? Will Richard bust out the mini-smoker? TUNE IN!
378083, I'm rooting for Stephanie, but I think Richard takes it

is this fucking live again, with the audience "watching" the finale? I hate that shit.

most judges thought was the best.
378098, I was swearing up a storm there for a second
Posted by HiKwelity, Wed Jun-11-08 10:12 PM
I thought they were going to give it to Lisa there for a second. Damn I hate the fabricated suspense of reality TV.

Was kind of pulling for Richard, but I think it was a well-deserved win for Stephanie. She seemed to really be hitting on every challenge towards the end, if I remember correctly.

Oh, and all of Richard's shots at Lisa throughout were hilarious.
378104, I was *scared* LIsa was about to win
Posted by will_5198, Wed Jun-11-08 10:43 PM
I think the judge's spent most of the deliberation hours convincing themselves it wasn't supposed to be Lisa
378111, I spent the entire last 20 minutes telling myself
Posted by JungleSouljah, Wed Jun-11-08 11:35 PM
Lisa may win this. Maybe she deserves to win? They all seemed to enjoy almost every course of hers. I tried to talk myself down from the bell tower.

I was ecstatic when they said it was Steph.

And I agree. I don't give a fuck what was said during the show, they spent all that time convincing themselves that it was OK to give it to Steph based on how close it was and overall performance. Because based on what was said there? It sounded like Lisa had the better over all service. But I guess we'll never know how much better that lamb/pistachio/olive dish was than everything else.

And I'm a bit bummed for Richard. He knew he fucked up. That's almost worse than getting slapped in the face with fucking up.
378117, I was scurred.

I don't care what the judges say about not taking personality and past performance in account. That HAD to have played a role in their decision. If Lisa had won couple more challenges and/or exhibited a more pleasant demeanor at judges' table, she probably would've won.

lmao at 3% of the viewers wanting Lisa to win. That's worse than last week's poll.

I really wish he hadn't admitted to the judges that he choked. Did he think they might give it to him anyway, for admitting he knew he could do better?

Also, why do so many of these amazing chefs get so fucked up on the dessert course. Like you are going on a cooking competition, learn how to cook 2 desserts well.

You had like 3 weeks off before the last two episodes, you don't think learning how to make a good dessert would be beneficial?

Every season a number of chefs get fucked over on the dessert. You'd figure by now they gotta step their dessert game up if they wanna win.

I bet Dale woulda had an amazing dessert...lol..lemme stop
379260, I think its cause its too exact and you can't really taste as you go
Posted by DubSpt, Mon Jun-16-08 05:52 PM
You just have to get a good recipe, memorize it, then do it over and over and over again till you have it down pat.

Whereas with say, cooking meat, you can have an idea in your head, start working and change things constantly as you go along until you get something that tastes good. And if towards the end it isn't that good, you just add a little salt. You can't just add powdered sugar to a cake and no that it will make it all right.
378162, Damn Richard. Damn Damn Damn. But I'm glad Steph won.
Posted by DawgEatah, Thu Jun-12-08 08:56 AM
She definitely deserves it.

And yeah. I was pretty worried Lisa was gonna get it.
I love when, right before they give the verdict, they always say something about each Chef, and they ALWAYS say some awkwardly generic shit about Lisa.

"Lisa... Asian flavors are your thing.... Bold.... Spicy... It's all about you..."

378244, I was musing about the finale for a bit before bed
Posted by JungleSouljah, Thu Jun-12-08 12:04 PM
And a rather obvious observation came to me.

Lisa finally was able to do her thing and she looked just as good, if not better than the other top chefs on the show. But except for one or two times in the previous 13 episodes she was never really impressive as a chef. She was often in the bottom two or three but was obviously lucky in that she was never as bad as some. But when she was finally able to cook her food, her way? She did well.

So the question in my mind is: could/would all 'great' chefs do well at the various challenges that Top Chef presents?. Every season we see good chefs like Sam, Tre, and Dale ousted before their time. What's to say that Tom or Eric Rippert or Thomas Keller would excel at those same challanges?

I guess at the end of the day, the argument is that if you have solid basic cooking skills (decent butchery, knife work, strong palette, creativity/imagination, and seasoning) you would likely go far. I realize the challenges are essential to the format of the show, but it still makes me wonder how a heavily awarded chef would fare on the show. Would chefs who have a more versatile or expansive cuisine do better than one who focuses on one particular region or another?

Thoughts?
378294, Well, as Alton Brown always said on The Next Iron Chef...
Posted by kurlyswirl, Thu Jun-12-08 02:31 PM
"Even good chefs have bad days."

So, yes, I believe that a chef a revered as Eric Ripert or Thomas Keller could have been booted before making it to the finale. Maybe Ripert would have been criticized for working too much with seafood. lol

Would chefs who
>have a more versatile or expansive cuisine do better than one
>who focuses on one particular region or another?

I think the challenges may be designed to favor those with a more expansive culinary repertoire, but for those who specialize in a particular cuisine, if a dish is done well, it may have the power to impress the judges a little more because it's not something they see every day. Think of the Spanish chef who was there for Restaurant Wars. He was impressed as hell with Dale's Halo Halo, even though Bourdain, who'd had it before, wasn't all that thrilled with it.

Then again, Steph and Richard didn't specialize, and the judges were always commenting on how surprisingly good some of their flavor combinations were.

378505, Totally.
Posted by kurlyswirl, Fri Jun-13-08 03:08 PM
And actually, that came out a lot at judges' table - when they were asked if they made a particular dish before, Blais and Steph almost always said that was the first time they'd made the dish, and Lisa almost always said it was something she'd done before.

Posted by Deebot, Thu Jun-12-08 07:52 PM
Did Lisa really do the best but they held her resume against her? (which of course they're not supposed to do), or did they simply edit it to give her more of a chance? Looked like her red meat wasn't that great, but they didn't discuss it much at all. Meanwhile, the judges made cases for Lisa's other 3 dishes as the best.

I already forgot what Stephanie's 2nd dish was, can someone help me out?
378390, Steph's second dish was the quail egg, lobster infused ravioli
Posted by JungleSouljah, Thu Jun-12-08 10:59 PM
Which they genuinely liked except for the undercooked leeks that didn't seem to work with the rest of the dish.
378392, so should the top chef be only judged on THAT one meal?

i can see ppl being eliminated based ONE MEAL/challenge. but to name top chef based on one meal is kinda wack. its not like steph cooked a wack meal. but all 3 were prolly good. and steph and lisa were prolly neck and neck, but the tiebreaker will no doubt go to steph.
378401, dude, that's what they say they judge it on

>steph cooked a wack meal. but all 3 were prolly good. and
>steph and lisa were prolly neck and neck, but the tiebreaker
>will no doubt go to steph.

I know, I follow. I was just annoyed that the season ended up with Lisa having no chance in the finale even though she did really well. Almost makes me wish Steph fucked up to see if they had the balls to give it to Lisa. They prolly woulda gave it to Blais then, lol. And I'm not trying to specifically defend Lisa (even though I don't hate her as much as most of yall), I'm saying it just sucks that there was dead weight in the finale and they gave her false hope.

Bravo’s 'Top Chef' Tour Takes Shape
June 16, 2008

B&C has been all over Bravo’s Top Chef tour. Since breaking the story in May, we have taken a video tour of the truck and spoken to former “cheftestants” (ugh) about what they will be doing as the tour moves forward.

Well, Bravo has announced the tour dates, so all you Top Chef fanatics take note: the tour could be coming to your city soon.

Long Island, NY June 21

Boston, MA July 1

Philadelphia, PA July 4

Pittsburgh, PA July 9

Columbus, OH July 12

St. Louis, MO July 16

Denver, CO July 19

Phoenix, AZ July 26

San Diego, CA July 30

San Francisco, CA August 2, 3

Los Angeles, CA August 8

Des Moines, IA August 16

Detroit, MI August 23

Madison, WI August 27

Chicago, IL September 3, 4

Raleigh, NC September 13

Tampa, FL September 20

Orlando, FL September 24

Atlanta, GA September 27

New York, NY TBD

That’s right, New York is TBD. Whatever.

So what can fans and affiliates expect? Well, in each city the cheftestants will perform four live interactive shows, three for fans and one for Bravo's cable affiliates.

Also on board the truck will be cooking demos, tastings, show secrets and cooking tips.

Affiliates will also get a private meet and greet with the chefs, taggable spots promoting the tour as well as logo and product placement inside the truck.
379243, I wanna hit the Detroit stop, where can I get more info??

I'm just glad that Richard's "bronze medal" comment wasn't brought up.

Would any of you wear an "I have a culinary boner" tee in public? lol
