242044, He makes a very, very strong case.
Posted by ZooTown74, Sun Dec-31-06 10:35 PM
PTP hates him, but he makes damn good movies... always has...

Oh, and PTP might want to prepare to get mad again, as Letters is getting serious Best Picture Oscar talk... it's a pretty damn effective movie, the kind of joint the Academy tends to dig...

flags of our fathers was good... woulda been great if didnt start to fall off towards the end of the film. but i hear Letters is the much better of the two so i have high hopes.
242063, Sure. Million Dollar Baby was some horseshit.
Posted by Ryan M, Mon Jan-01-07 06:02 AM
Plus bignick posted the rest of his shitty movies.

THAT being said, I think he's certainly a great director (Mystic River and Unforgiven...plus the performances in M$B are undeniably great - except of course his own), but he's definitely not the greatest living one. No sir.
242089, I HATE all of this talk. It makes me want to not like Clint Eastwood.
Posted by Frank Longo, Mon Jan-01-07 02:08 PM
Because while he is very good, he is not even close to the best living American filmmaker. The only title he has earned is "most praised living American filmmaker."

M$B was alright. Mystic River was alright. I mean, the man is good at placing shadows in every frame of the movie. But are they REALLY that good?
242099, Here's his entire body of work:

242141, or
Posted by DrNO, Mon Jan-01-07 06:16 PM
Brian DePalma, or Michael Mann, or Woody Allen.
242171, Yeah, I coulda gone on.
Posted by Frank Longo, Tue Jan-02-07 12:04 AM
242174, ain't hard.
Posted by DrNO, Tue Jan-02-07 12:08 AM
242182, At this point, I'll put Eastwood over DePalma
Posted by mrhood75, Tue Jan-02-07 12:53 AM

He hasn't made a movie I'd even describe as "good" in 10 years. And his last close to great one was in 1993. And he had his share of stinkers before then.
242198, Femme Fatale was fantastic
Posted by DrNO, Tue Jan-02-07 03:22 AM
Mission Impossible was great. Mission to Mars has passionate defenders, as does Black Dahlia.

Check out the synopsis of his next movie:
Toyer is a madman, highly intelligent and masterfully manipulative, he charms his way into the homes of his victims, all beautiful young women and skillfully labotomizes them. With no trace of forced entry at the crime scenes, the police are baffled, and as the number of victims increases, they show no sign of solving the case. Enter Dr. Maude Garance. As the neurologist who cares for Toyer's victims, Dr. Garance is living daily with the horror that Toyer's savagery yields. She must stop him at any cost. As she builds a detailed psychological picture of the culprit she quickly realizes it will take every ounce of strength to expose him. However she may come face to face with him sooner than she thinks...
242212, RE: Femme Fatale was fantastic
Posted by m, Tue Jan-02-07 10:08 AM
i'm glad i'm not the only one who thought so.

"casualties of war" was a great movie as well. (though that was 20 years ago.)
242245, I'll admit, I completely forgot about "Femme Fatale"
Posted by mrhood75, Tue Jan-02-07 12:15 PM
However, "Snakes Eyes" was ass-crack, "Mission 2 Mars" was boring, and he never should have bothered with "Black Dahlia." Shit was completely unadaptable. I will say I enjoyed "Mission Impossible," but to call it fantastic is a stretch. And between "Carlito's Way" and "Casualties of War," he made two supreme stinkers.
242343, he still beats Eastwood
Posted by DrNO, Tue Jan-02-07 07:01 PM
and even his worst films are infinitely more interesting than Eastwood's best.
242176, You're type silly if you don't believe he's made some damn good films
Posted by ZooTown74, Tue Jan-02-07 12:26 AM
And yeah (bignick), we can quibble over bin's use of the word "great," but let's stop acting like Clint Eastwood is Zalman King with a squint and a sneer. Jesus.
