flags of our fathers was good... woulda been great if didnt start to fall off towards the end of the film. but i hear Letters is the much better of the two so i have high hopes.

THAT being said, I think he's certainly a great director (Mystic River and Unforgiven...plus the performances in M$B are undeniably great - except of course his own), but he's definitely not the greatest living one. No sir.

Because while he is very good, he is not even close to the best living American filmmaker. The only title he has earned is "most praised living American filmmaker."

M$B was alright. Mystic River was alright. I mean, the man is good at placing shadows in every frame of the movie. But are they REALLY that good?

There are more movies I'd call GREAT in this list than in Clint's.

Brian DePalma, or Michael Mann, or Woody Allen.

He hasn't made a movie I'd even describe as "good" in 10 years. And his last close to great one was in 1993. And he had his share of stinkers before then.

Mission Impossible was great. Mission to Mars has passionate defenders, as does Black Dahlia.

i'm glad i'm not the only one who thought so.

"casualties of war" was a great movie as well. (though that was 20 years ago.)

However, "Snakes Eyes" was ass-crack, "Mission 2 Mars" was boring, and he never should have bothered with "Black Dahlia." Shit was completely unadaptable. I will say I enjoyed "Mission Impossible," but to call it fantastic is a stretch. And between "Carlito's Way" and "Casualties of War," he made two supreme stinkers.

and even his worst films are infinitely more interesting than Eastwood's best.

And yeah (bignick), we can quibble over bin's use of the word "great," but let's stop acting like Clint Eastwood is Zalman King with a squint and a sneer. Jesus.
