234135, Rocky Balboa. Have we discussed this foolishness?
Posted by disco dj, Wed Nov-29-06 10:22 AM
seriously. I think Stallone has BECOME Rocky; he can't stay away from the game...

is ANYBODY here going to see this?
If so, is it because you think it's gonna be good, or is it for the kitsch value?

234140, i think u gotta be a Rocky diehard to see it
Posted by araQual, Wed Nov-29-06 10:40 AM
my mate owns all the films on dvd, so im pretty sure he'll go see it.
myself, i ain't even seen rock 4 & 5.

V.
234146, I saw IV, but I had no desire to see V
Posted by disco dj, Wed Nov-29-06 11:03 AM
but THIS is just nuts. Balboa is like 75 years old, and Stallone is selling it to us like he could still get in the ring, lol...

234153, He's 60 to be exact, and get off your high horse
Posted by Mignight Maruder, Wed Nov-29-06 11:18 AM
This could/can be a great movie. It's the last chapter on the life of Rocky Balboa....Syllvester Stallone has stated several times that his life does not mirror "Rocky Balboa's" and that ppl love Rocky, not his actual self.....I read a great article about him and the movie in the latest 'Philadelphia' magazine...
234157, Hmm, I wonder why people love Rocky ?

237077, seriously. Would you like a ride on my High Horse?

"this could be a great chapter..."

fuckoutta here. This could be a money grubbing opportunity for Stallone to profit off the idiocy of the American Public.

234154, I tell people about it just to see the look on their face.
Posted by themn, Wed Nov-29-06 11:18 AM
There's going to be another Rambo as well, I believe LOL.
234160, I'll be there opening night
Posted by tappenzee, Wed Nov-29-06 11:39 AM
This one's supposed to be "grittier", like the original Rocky, and moving away from the campy storylines of the sequels.

I realize that it's most likely not going to be anywhere near the original, but I mark out for Rocky films (except for V, that one was just awful)
234220, The mere IDEA of this movie is campy lol
Posted by MANHOODLUM, Wed Nov-29-06 03:29 PM
He was beaten retarded in the 80's.

It's 2006.

He should be pissing himself even looking @ the ring.

shits funny.
234187, It looks like a remake of the first Rocky
Posted by SoulHonky, Wed Nov-29-06 02:00 PM
Replace unknown with old. That being said, the first Rocky is a classic so this one should be fine. And any film that employs AJ Benza has to get a little respect.
234192, I for one think it could be good, and can't wait to see it.
Posted by Frank Longo, Wed Nov-29-06 02:17 PM
234195, is the release date Christmas day?
Posted by Deebot, Wed Nov-29-06 02:24 PM
if so, I'll just have to ditch my family for awhile. I wanna see this, and I'm not even a huge Rocky fan.

237079, This reply is #49.
Posted by disco dj, Mon Dec-11-06 08:38 AM
Now, I will point out to you that the fact that I think you're an idiot is irrelevant, but you DO realize that I posted this WEEKS before the movie came out, AND that many people (which is obvious from some of the replies in this post) weren't aware that "Rocky Balboa" had been made and was scheduled for release. THUS, the early returns were low.

Having said all that, the fact that you came into my post calling me a hater was ironic. Expecially considering that YOUR original reply was in ITSELF hating. Perhaps you should have spent your time talking about the movie (like the rest of us), instead of spouting off dumb shit.

oh wait...that's all you're good at.

If this was a real fight, it would be on ESPN Friday Night Fights, if that!

I'll watch in on cable, like I did the one with Tommy Morrison.

236418, Yeah, so it was pretty bad.
Posted by ZooTown74, Thu Dec-07-06 02:48 PM
I saw it, and ain't going to spoil it, except to say, it wasn't good at all.

Oh well, at least we still have 4 entertaining films to remind us (I'm not counting the abomination that was Rocky V)

236524, RE: Yeah, so it was pretty bad.
Posted by Call It Anything, Thu Dec-07-06 10:46 PM
That's kind of what I was expecting. I'm still curious to see what kind of returns it gets. Maybe if this one makes money Rocky will step into the ring for an exhibition with the mayor of Memphis like Joe Frazier did.

>Oh well, at least we still have 4 entertaining films to remind
>us (I'm not counting the abomination that was Rocky V)

I give Rocky V some credit for having the balls to break the formula set by the first four. On its face, it does a decent job of telling the story of how a boxer copes with life out of the spotlight when he can no longer step into the ring. I also thought the flashback scenes with Burgess Meredith were pretty moving. And the closing credits were great. Took the template from the Rocky IV credits and found the perfect song to summarize Rocky. I can really just watch the closing credits of Rocky V and be entertained.

Of course that's about all the credit it's going to get because the acting was terrible, the Rocky Jr. story was awful and I didn't buy the way Tommy Gunn turned so quickly. The climax at the end was not at all satisfying to me either.

All in all, the movie was bad. But it's not as bad as a lot of people make it out to be. To me it's the difference between failing a test with a 50 and failing a test with a 0. Of course in the end it still fails.
236520, i just give him props for keeping the music Juicy in 2006 ( Link )

He's lost his mind and is making Rocky Baloba and Rambo about faith.

I ordered a kit and got the hat and the materials comparing Rocky to Mosses.

It's surreal.

But I like Sly so I'll wait for the non-internet reviews before deciding to see it or not.

237095, he really needs to just quit...

The "enemy" of this film is aging. Remember that Italian dude from "Raw"... Imagine how pumped he'll be to see the Italian Stallion still putting in work, now that he's 75 pounds overweight in a loveless marriage with erectile disfunction.
239071, two thumbs up

239168, Tyler and Roeper gave it two thumbs up

239203, i didn't get to watch Ebert & Roeper last week
Posted by AFKAP_of_Darkness, Mon Dec-18-06 01:34 AM
did Aisha give ANY movie thumbs down?

because this week it was thumbs up all across the board... she even praised 50's acting!

i question the wisdom of having actors sit in Roger's chair because they're too reluctant to burn bridges by dissing anything or anyone
239212, That's exactly what I was thinking
Posted by ZooTown74, Mon Dec-18-06 02:05 AM
The most egregious example of this is when she tried to critique 50's acting... she was Savion Glovering all her words... it was pretty pathetic...

I have the misfortune of being exposed to his column in the daily paper here. He reads like a High School columnist.

and when they selected him to be Ebert's new partner, I knew that show was done. Actually it's been done since Gene Siskel died. He kept Ebert honest.

239226, Event thought the amrketed this via Christian Churches i'll probably see it...
Posted by handle, Mon Dec-18-06 05:16 AM
Because i like Stallone and the reviews have been very positive.

And I'd also like to feel Aisha Tyler up:

239394, Ironically enough, I went to one of the early screenings
Posted by ZooTown74, Mon Dec-18-06 05:34 PM
but didn't get in because I got there too late... Aisha and her man also showed up at the same time I did... when she heard that the screening was closed, she gave a "oh, hell no" look to her man and proceeded to bumrush the front of the line... I just left...

240058, Did not like it
Posted by Call It Anything, Wed Dec-20-06 11:05 PM
I had low expectations going in but I was still disappointed. A lot of people want to like this movie. I'm sure some of them will like it for what it is and some others probably will like it for what they want it to be. But as far as I'm concerned, Rocky V > Rocky Balboa.

I'm a huge Rocky fan. To the point of embarassment. I won't really go into it, but there was a lot of little shit that pissed me off in this movie. Like all of the sudden Rocky went from having 57 wins, 29 by KO (even though I've always asserted that the Drago fight was an unsanctioned exhibition bout and shouldn't have counted towards his professional record thereby making it 56 (28)) all of the sudden he has 57 wins and 54 by KO in this movie. Did they think no one would notice?

Also, what the fuck happened to Rocky's irreversible severe brain trauma? What happened to "You can't get licensed in any state"? Did we just retcon that out like Chuck Cunningham and Judy Winslow?

There's really too much for me to write about, but I barely felt a thing that entire movie. I felt no tension, no drama, no triumph. It felt like watching surgery on one of those late night cable channels. The scene where he's yelling at his son might have been the only part where I felt myself getting into it. Most of the time it was just heavy handed references from the original Rocky and some cute loveable dopey shit from Stallone. I'm really not hard to please. Apparently I'm the only person out there who thinks Rocky V is watchable. But I really did not like this movie.
240059, I HATE Rocky.
Posted by Bohemian_Bomb, Wed Dec-20-06 11:10 PM
I think the original sucked.

I think all the sequels were even worse.

The fight scenes are awful. Sly is awful. The only redeeming part: Eye of the Tiger.

Here's the boxing movies I'd take head and shoulders above any Rocky ever made:

When We Were Kings
Raging Bull
Ali
Cinderella Man
Girlfight
The Hurricane

Shit, I think I liked The Great White Hype more than Rocky.

There's probably more, but those are just the ones off the top of my head.

I will not be seeing Rocky Balboa.
240818, I'd rather let Stallone use my scrotum as a speed bag.

Posted by freedomtrain, Mon Dec-25-06 12:58 PM
Going into this movie I didnt expect much. Maybe I'm just gettin older (37) but this movie was pretty good. It won't be on my top 10 films of the year, but it was (and this may sound corny)a very touching film. The rocky charector was on some grown man shit. I saw the movie here in Seattle and after it was over people were clapping which was surprising.

Kinda Spolier ish.......

The part where he raised up on some people disrespecting a women.
Offering said women a job and not expecting to have sex with her, then mentoring her son, who didn't have a father figure in his life.

Rockys got heart.
