What yuo should be comparing the movie to is what kind of business it would have done if it weren't for the marketing strategy, that is, compare the movie to flicks like Anaconda, POSEIDON, Lake Placid, Congo, etc.

The movie is a success in terms of getting the most bang out of its marketing budget through internet marketing.
