210199, are net hipsters ever gonna admit their zealotry tanked SoaP
Posted by Basaglia, Mon Aug-28-06 09:14 PM

it's pathetic watching y'all muhfuckas try to ignore that horrendous tank job. all y'all talked about was snakes this and snakes that FOR A FUCKIN YEAR and now y'all ignoring that shit like that shit the deaf kid backing into the elevator on good times.

WELL I'MMA TALK ABOUT!

that dumb ass blog is to blame

them dumb ass pics are to blame

all them dumb ass oh-so-clever articles are to blame

that movie would have been marketed MUCH BETTER and made much more money if the studio had not listened to you fuckin get-wits. y'all saturated the media with that bullshit and everyday moviegoers got turned the fuck off. i dunno why the media is tryna spin this shit about people didn't wanna see a horror movie....fuck outta here. the omen made more money and it was some shit.

we all know why people ain't going to see this movie and people don't wanna say it...BACKLASH! it was too fuckin much...when you try to sell people some "if you ain't with it, you're a square" bullshit, people tend to laugh at you and ignore you.

i told y'all that shit was gonna tank and i'mma be a petty ass i-told-you-so for as long as i feel like it.

you know what would be cool to say when something blows up in your fuckin' face: oh well, man...snakes on a plane.

Ditto that. Many of those who saw it did so because of the internet hype.

Blame the internet hype for SoaP's poor box office?! I don't think so. Blame the media for latching onto this phenomenon and making outlandish predictions for the movie. Blame the studio for marketing it in a way that shot themselves in the foot. For my part, I was in a sold-out auditorium opening day, laughing my ass off. Audiences loved it. Critics loved it. The movie didn't perform at the box office? That's the studio's problem, and they only have themselves to blame. I think the movie shouldn't have been pushed as a traditional summer blockbuster. Releasing it in fewer theaters would have been a good start. There was plenty the studio could have done to build up anticipation more slowly and deliberately. This movie never was gonna appeal to your typical summer blockbuster audience, and they didn't maximize its potential by playing to its strengths. But, a 15 million dollar opening for a movie about snakes on a plane is not too shabby, in my view. The predictions were WAY off, and in its own way, the movie lived up to the hype and then some. I think it's pretty stupid that the studio couldn't figure out how to capitalize on what went down during SoaP's opening weekend, because the movie really was a blast for everyone who actually saw it.
210236, The problem was it's an R-rated movie with violent snake deaths.
Posted by Frank Longo, Mon Aug-28-06 10:33 PM
R-rated movies on the whole don't sell as well as PG-13 movies, especially in terms of horror.

Creature features also historically don't do terribly well.

R-rated movies that get hyped for being ridiculous and/or ridiculously bad don't do well at the box office, regardless of what millions of bloggers tell you.
210244, who wanted it to be R-rated?....YOU PEOPLE

We don't want what in actuality might be a safer bet for the public. We want what we think will rule. What we think will rule doesn't necessarily translate to box office dollars.

Look at the Star Wars prequels. Geeks have gone crazy bitching about those, and yet they grossed a shitload of money.

Posted by Marauder21, Mon Aug-28-06 10:56 PM
the internet is a money tree that will bring them untold millions?

The internet is mugfuggers like us with too much time on their hands trying to be clever. We don't make anyone money, we don't even make ourselves money. If we did we'd be swimming in pools of gold coins instead of posting on OKP. WTF made them think we're mainstream America?

We hyped a FILM, they hyped the PROFITS. I don't know why New Line gassed up their expected profits, but I know why I gassed up the film. A snake bit a tittie!

I got my money's worth.

Posted by Dr Claw, Tue Aug-29-06 08:37 AM
but even he knows that SoaP was built for a niche audience...that audience went to see the film; more will buy the DVD wondering what all the fuss is all about.

Sure, they didn't break box office records, but were they supposed to? Hell, no. A lot of people EXPECTED it to take a L here.
210363, Snakes on a Plane was never about the movie.
Posted by iagoali, Tue Aug-29-06 10:57 AM
The movie was entirely ancillary to the phenomenon.

210370, Wait How was SoaP a failure?
Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Tue Aug-29-06 11:45 AM
An R rated b movie made for 30 Mil that does 15 mil its opening weekend?

It is only a failure if you were foolish enough to think the movie would have done spiderman, Pirates or X-men numbers. What yuo should be comparing the movie to is what kind of business it would have done if it weren't for the marketing strategy, that is, compare the movie to flicks like Anaconda, POSEIDON, Lake Placid, Congo, etc.

The movie is a success in terms of getting the most bang out of its marketing budget through internet marketing.

The studio poorly marketed the film because they ignorantly thought all the marketing was built in with the internet fervor. I've met dozens of people who didn't even hear about the film until it dropped. All the internet shit just got the geeks and college students into the theater, but when a quarter of the country doesn't even own a computer (let alone go digging for fansites), how the hell are they supposed to hear about it without copious commercials, interviews and posters? One interview with Jackson on the Daily Show ain't gonna cut it. The studio got cheap on the back end of the film and they fucked themselves over. You're right in that the hype had a hand in the poor ticket sales, but only because the studio didn't utilize the hype.

man, shut the fuck up...that movie was written about in newpapers and magazine FAR MORE than any other film this summer.

snakes on a plane was a fuckin catchphrase BEFORE it was a movie.

>I've met dozens of people who didn't even hear about

riiiiiiight...all those muhfuckan people who went to see ricky bobby that weekend didn't notice snakes on a plane was out too.

All the internet shit just got the

>quarter of the country doesn't even own a computer (let alone

even if this were true...15 opening on 3555 screens is INEXCUSABLE EVEN IF A QUARTER OF THE COUNTRY WAS IGNORANT OF THE FILM.

>how the hell are they supposed to
>hear about it without copious commercials, interviews and
>posters?

fuck outta here, nigga. there WERE commercials...and stop acting like sam dawg wasn't on leno and dave...even that wack chick from the TV version of clueless did talk shows AND was in parade magazine, which is WIDELY circulated, as it is in nearly every fuckin sunday newspaper. MORON!

>One interview with Jackson on the Daily Show ain't

Jesus Christ, man. Suck it up. You have no idea what you're talking about. Lots of press, especially mostly internet press does not equal success at the box office. This film would have flopped like crazy had it not been for the internet marketing. It satisfied its fans and it's gonna make dividends for the studio. The only people mad are dumbfuck box office projectors... and you.

You're out of your element, man. Just go back to being kind of funny and kind of interesting on OKSports. Your schtick just looks dumb here.
