3011487, Julia Holter - Aviary

Has anyone checked out the new Julia Holter album? I've been listening to it constantly since the day it came out (October 26). I know there was a post on Have You In My Wilderness (her last album) here in 2015. Her new album, Aviary is basically nothing like that one, the more structured format of Wilderness is pretty much abandoned completely and the songs are way more expansive and experimental. It's closer to some of her earlier work (Ekstasis) but still a whole new beast. At first I only liked it, but upon repeat listens I began to love it. Definitely not something to dismiss on the first listen imo.

Being 90 minutes and probably her most "out there" work it definitely isn't for everyone. People that got into her with Wilderness (which I did) may be turned off with this, because it's such a sharp left turn. That said, it's my joint favorite album of the year so far (tied with that amazing Noname album). There is just such a wide range of beauty on this thing, my favorite tracks are probably "Words I Heard", "Voce Simul", "Everyday Is An Emergency", "I Shall Love 2", "In Gardens' Muteness" and "Chaitius.", but there is nothing I don't like on this, though "Another Dream" is my least favorite. I wrote about the album in more detail here: https://93millionmilesabove.blogspot.com/2018/11/julia-holter-aviary-2018.html
