i'm not sure "top notch pen game" and "atmospheric" are mutually exclusive. it sounds to me like earl is trying for a middle ground. he's been playing writerly artists like mach-hommy, conway, guilty simpson, etc. on his red bull radio show for a few years. he's also been known to play valee songs in his live sets and has been working with MIKE's crew. both of those artists favor brevity and being concise over bars overflowing with syllables
