3010827, The best Hip Hop tracks that were never officially released
Posted by spitfire, Mon Oct-29-18 02:59 PM
a conversation on the Outlawz made me think of 'Driving down the Freeway' , an absolute classic from Young Buck that was produced by Hi-Tek and features Dion (where the hell is this dude BTW?) and said Outlawz.

I love that joint and a couple of years back i was hanging around in our local Hip Hop bar when an inconspicuous Tek came in for a drink. i urged the bartender to put on Drivin down the freeway and as soon as the intro hit Hi-teks eyes got big and he ran to the bartender "How did you get this joint?? it was never released!!"
I think there were some issues with sample clearance, but it made me wonder..

In a genre where mixtapes, white labels, bootlegs, shelved projects and digging is all a big part of the culture, what are some of the best Hip Hop joints that never saw the daylight officially?

here are some of my picks:

Young Buck ft. the Outlawz & Dion - Driving down the Freeway (Hi-Tek)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=63t-n6LCgNw

Kool G Rap & Nas - Fast life (Norfside remix) (Salaam Remi)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LN-OQyslzT8

Biggie ft. Busta Rhymes - The Ugliest (Dilla)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DrS3JJ6yfe4

Rakim - I get visual (Salaam Remi)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9-2LkpUqH38

Kendrick Lamar ft. Gunplay - Cartoons & Cereal
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qbbQb9bEcDQ

Kanye West ft. Consequence - The Good, the Bad & the Ugly
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UZfU6KgAJ-U (never saw this vid :o)

Black Thought - Please don't go
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OZt4bE3U_4s

Killah Priest ft. Killa Sin - Moanin'
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=95TiyQchZ7I

Jay Electronica - Girlfriend (SNIPPET)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y3VyyPLauH8

Nas - the Scientist (Just Blaze) SNIPPET

That one is not even on YouTube.

Always loved 2Pac - Teardrops and Closed Caskets.

They released that on his Still I Rise album, but like a lot of those posthumous releases, they made changes to the song. They cut out the “in this woooorrrld” part of Nate’s vocals. Not as bad as changing the beats like on a lot of others, but still an unnecessary change that made the song worse.

They probably cut off the “in this world” part to avoid getting sued by the writers of the song he was interpolating. LTD if memory serves. Maybe the rest was dissimilar enough to fly under the radar?

These are all west coast because back in the like 1997/1998 when I started fucking with the internet heavy I was still firmly in my g-funk phase (which never really ended) and frequented "www.snoopsdogghouse.com" which always came thru with rare or unreleased Snoop/West Coast hip-hop so I had all of the above and way, way, way more downloaded on my computer.

3010869, Midnight Love is so god damn nice...
Posted by ry 213, Mon Oct-29-18 11:01 PM
Same with doggy style. Too bad they never made an album.
3010881, Ohhh another Doggystyle omission I forgot !!
Posted by Brew, Tue Oct-30-18 09:31 AM
Gz Up Hoez Down
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WvpYt6ml5CQ

Think this track, Tha Next Episode, and Doggystyle didn't make that album due to sample clearance issues. Both would've fit flawlessly on that album. I had Gz Up Hoes Down on my version, thankfully.

And yea Midnight Love is smooooooth on the g-funk tip.
3010913, Gz Up Hoes Down is on my version
Posted by ry 213, Tue Oct-30-18 07:47 PM
I think it made the original print but was later pulled. The track list is all fucked up towards the end of side B. I bought the cassette on release day, not sure of the CD bersikn has it.
3010922, Yea I got a CD with Gz Up Hoez Down and the fucked up tracklist.
Posted by Brew, Tue Oct-30-18 10:05 PM
So both were printed early with all of that. Think it was just the first wave of albums tho cause *everybody* I know has that album, but I'm the only person in my immediate circle who has that version.

3010923, Haha this song is the shit right ?
Posted by Brew, Tue Oct-30-18 10:09 PM
I understand why it didn't make the album; it doesn't really fit the sonic landscape of the rest of it. But man do I wish Comm found a place for it. That beat is too fucking dope.

As I listened to it today I thought that it had a similar aesthetic to the "Stakes is High" beat ... I think it's just the pure rawness of it, the hard-hitting feel that reminds me of "Stakes"

Dilla was so fucking dope, man.
3011064, nah I think it would have fit man...
Posted by Stadiq, Fri Nov-02-18 09:22 PM

In fact, I think Be could have benefited from a little variety.

I'm positive I've said this to you before, but if you add this track, Home from Late Registration, and eliminate Testify Be becomes pretty much a perfect album to me.

Then again, I will never say "Common + Dilla doesn't fit" anywhere haha.

3011139, Haha you may be on to something.

^^^^ that's def true.

But to your first point yea - I think you have said that in one of our previous convos here, and I could get with that I think. "Chi-City" could've used a partner in boom-bap crime I suppose.

So thankful my family attended Columbia University, home of The Stretch Armstrong & Bobbito show. I practically grew up on campus, and taped the show religiously. To this day I'm discovering gems of unreleased material from WKCR:

NaS - It Ain't Hard To Tell demo

Big Twan (from Big L's 8 Iz Enuff crew) - Manslaughter https://audiomack.com/song/collectors-item/manslaughter-demo

Mister Voodoo - Hemlock demo version

Inspectah Deck - Let Me At 'Em https://audiomack.com/song/collectors-item/let-me-at-em-piano-version

Kid Hood from ATQ's Scenario remix has an unreleased song out there on YouTube.

A lot of rarities from the 90's are coming out nowadays on labels like Dope Folks and Chopped Herring. Both labels are a great place for any Hip Hop fiend to shop.

I forgot about this. This track is ridiculous. That beat is just too fire.

I remember this came out around the same time a TI track (that was used in a commercial) came out and if THAT iteration of Detox dropped I think we were in for something special.

The "Kush"/"I Need a Doctor" version would've been ass, so I'm glad that one didn't come to fruition haha.

I saw the video once and never found it again. Now all I can find is the inferior 1.5 version.
