3010284, Preemo hasn't really worked with newer indie artists much, huh?
Posted by self_ish, Tue Oct-09-18 10:15 AM
Westside Gunn recently posted a pic with Premier in it and it got me to thinking that Premier hasn't really worked with a lot of the newer indie/underground rappers that have come to prominence over the past few years. Looking at his production discography on Wiki, the last few years for him have been somewhat light in general rap wise, outside of PRhyme. He's recently released songs with A$AP Ferg and Casanova that are pretty solid, but those two are both signed acts.

Considering the fact that Alchemist and even Pete Rock are getting placements with these newer indie cats, it stands out that Preemo isn't. Has he spoken about this at all in any interviews, or does anyone have a sense of why cats aren't getting beats from him?

3010285, Sounds like a legend who chooses to work with other professionals

Dosen't really have time to work with people who don't
take the craft seriously or have no record of being
reliable

That's almost certainly what it is more than him being
anti-underground

I mean, he made TWO albums with Royce. Royce is far far
from underground but his musical lane still is.

3010286, Definitely wasn't implying that he may be anti-underground

He plays mostly newer indie stuff on his radio show Live From Headqcourterz: http://premierwuzhere.com/tag/live-from-headqcourterz/

But to my point/query, he has 3 tracks from Roc Marciano on his latest playlist, and he's never worked with him to my knowledge. I know his policy is to make beats live in the studio with the artists he's working with as opposed to just sending tracks, which may be a deterrent for some. Or his rates may be too high for them, which I can respect and am not mad at.

And Orbit's point plays in too, let's be honest a up and coming underground rapper is probably the last person you want to do any type of real business with.
3010306, All of these current underground up-and-comers have a pretty solid...

..work ethic and stay putting out music.

Look at, Roc Marci (those he's not really new). He's dropped two projects in 2018, and will likely drop a third by year's ended. The Griselda cats and their affiliates never stop releasing albums. And some of these other guys have already put out 4 EPs this year.

I agree that it's more likely the getting into the studio in person thing and not being able to afford Primo's rates. I am however positive that Primo is aware of these cats most likely fans of all of them.
3010305, he team OVO now....he good

prolly don't care about the 500 units sold worldwide joints anymore.
3010308, He has worked with some already.

He has a joint on that G Rap/30 Spesh project (which is really a 38 Spesh album). He's produced a few tracks for Hus Kingpin. And almost everything else he dropped this year is with some sort of "underground" artist. He did tracks for Evidnence and Apathy's recent projects, and I believe he puts out Jamo Gang on his label.

Otherwise, the only other thing he did this year is the PRhyme 2 album. He didn't even produce anything on Book of Ryan.

So I suspect that what's stopping him from working directly with these dudes is the other stuff you mentioned: rates and availability. It's also possible that both he and them are just too busy to link up.
3010323, That G Rap/30 Spesh project totally slipped my mind. Good points..

I'm mainly just asking as a fan, 'cause I'd be interested in hearing a lot over these cats over Premier's production.
