3007368, If I get a hankering for a random sample, I check ReverbLP.

I wanted the Les McCann joint from “Ten Crack Commandments” and got it from there for $5.

If it’s something new, I’m cool with Amazon, because they normally have the digital version that comes with it.
3007381, usually Discogs

they have stuff I'm into, like old local artists, for cheap too. But I prefer to dig in person so I only use it for something I can't find, but really want.
3007398, I make my wantlists on Discogs, but I prefer to buy in person
Posted by tully_blanchard, Mon Jul-16-18 07:39 AM
There are a couple joints I KNOW I'll never find in person, so I keep those in my cart for when the spirit moves me, but I prefer to support my local spots.

I use discogs to catalog my stuff and to find out about things I didn't know were out, and use as a reminder for things I want, my wantlist; but I still go to stores and buy vinyl, with discogs I now know if I'm paying too much for a record I've been looking for a long time.

3007793, I have some special wants that Discogs fills....
Posted by bluetiger, Sun Jul-29-18 05:10 AM
otherwise, I am lucky in Miami for the local vinyl.

I'd like to branch out and have a more reliable online source though.

Love their interface for downloading the digital files.
3007489, Anybody used Vinyl Me, Please?
Posted by T Reynolds, Thu Jul-19-18 09:13 PM
Looks slick and all that. Seems interactive somewhat.

Used vinyl I only buy in person, but new vinyl I will buy online, usually directly from the artists websites, label websites, etc.

3007643, Record subscription services
Posted by Numba_33, Tue Jul-24-18 03:05 PM
like that bother me because you are blindly locked into getting whatever albums the service thinks you'll like on a monthly basis.

Now if they had a BJ's/Costco/Sam's Club type setup where you paid a monthly/annual fee to get access to their exclusive records, I'd be a bit more on board with that model, depending on that the monthly/annual price would be of course.
3007644, But I think you can curate your selection..or something like that
Posted by tully_blanchard, Tue Jul-24-18 03:26 PM
My homie was telling me about VMP, and that if you don't like what they send you, you can return for something else they have..or even have a "preference" over the type of music they send you.

I joined in the summer and the current run is good. AND they warn you about the records they gonna send/give you an option to trade it in their shop before they send it.

Thing is similar to Columbia house you would be surprised how often you forget to check the new record and thus you're getting...what you're getting. And while the store has a bunch of releases its selection doesn't feel robust (but I think its cause we are used to having a music buffet exponentially larger in the mp3 era than when music access was to pay per album)
3007914, I'd sold the ones I forgot to swap out.
Posted by bluetiger, Fri Aug-03-18 03:38 AM
but they are a better Columbia House. good analogy
3007816, I subscribe
Posted by Hitokiri, Mon Jul-30-18 11:00 AM
and I like it quite a bit. You really need to keep up because they have surprise drops all the time and in limited quantities. I typically check in on them daily.

new or old I just enjoy the process. No great spots in Houston (apart from Half Price Books which has a grip of jazz reissues) so I usually wait until I'm in Austin or LA which is also better for my wallet

I didn't see what the big deal was. Especially when the R&B section was only two bins.

although one caveat is that their movie selection is really really good (though super pricey), so I do end up there once a year or so, just to browse the quirky imports.

But for music I'm content with End Of An Ear, Breakaway and HPB. I should probably branch out and check some other spots but the couple I've tried didn't do anything for me
3007856, I didnt have time for End of an Ear..went to "Friends of Sound"

Re: Discogs
Now, 75% of what I want from Discogs is predominately available from overseas sellers, typically based in Europe. What's that all about? I'm really into 12" inches for remixes and instrumentals. My goal is to get into bedroom DJing and mixing and those releases are crucial for what I want to do.

Anyway, almost everything I buy online is from Discogs or eBay but mainly Discogs. I should start supporting other sites. I like shopping at the Dusty Groove's store in Chicago but I rarely buy from the online shop. And I'm sure there are some low-key, lesser-known sites with a nice selection and fair prices.

To those of you who use a subscription service, through the likes of Stones Throw, Numero Group, Now-Again, etc. how's that working for you? Are you happy with the selection?
http://www.numerogroup.com/subscription
https://www.stonesthrow.com/news/2017/12/one-year-vinyl-subscription
https://www.rappcats.com/shop/reserve/

I should add that I prefer to buy in person. I like garage sales and sales advertised on EstatesSales.net, though I still support my local shops. Thing with my local shops is that they rely heavily on selling newly released albums and reissues. I rarely find the jazz want as I like to buy the original pressings unless the reissue has special features that most reissues don't have. A good example would be Light in the Attic's Digable Planet vinyl reissues. Those had nice liner notes, and I don't even normally buy hip-hop on wax...

I posted this in another thread today, and it's slightly off topic, but if you're in LA, check out these Now Again Records(Egon and Madlib)/Rappcats pop-up events. This seems like a nice alternative and a way to pick up something out of the ordinary in person. DJ Shadow apparently hosted an annual "storage clean out" sale there. And OGs like Phil Ranelin have made appearances. Apparently, Madlib has shown up before, too.

Also, I just learned last year that Numero Group has a "factory outlet" in Chicago.

a lot of the wax I’ve been buying or wanting recently has only been available from very small outlets — independent labels with no distribution or direct from artists via Bandcamp. unfortunately for my wallet, most are based in far-off, distant lands. similar to what BlakStaar said, a lot of it comes out of Europe and the shipping is no joke, often costing as much as the record itself. I’ve got a wishlist on Discogs and even a lot of that is from sellers in various parts of the EU. I’ve held off on a lot of purchases because of it.

I occasionally check Turntable Lab or FatBeats just to see what’s new and coming soon, but it's been a while since I ordered from either; most vinyl from bigger artists I get in a local shop.
