3006935, Random shouts out to your hometown in songs
Posted by obsidianchrysalis, Tue Jun-26-18 10:00 PM
Jus Lyke Compton came on my Spotify Daily Mix and of course Quik mentioned St. Louis. (314, 636!!)

He got it right with 'hot as a m#thaf#cka, hot enough to make 'ya cuss'.

But the line before I'm not so sure about, 'Movin on to St. Louis, where they country as f*ck. With gold teeth in they mouth, but they still know what's up'

I've heard of folks from E. St. Louis or maybe even Chicago thinking that folks from St. Louis were country but having lived there I don't quite see it.

When I lived in San Francisco, I sensed that some of the people I worked with thought I was a bit country, but I just took that as folks being from a 'real' city kind of being out of touch with 'flyover country'.

Outside perspective aside, do any of you double-take at the random comments artists mention about your hometown?

I couldn't picture changes when I was with Ms. Craten

3006964, ...Brooklyn keeps on taking it....(KRS) The Bridge is over
Posted by c71, Wed Jun-27-18 11:35 AM
I had to admit it was quite a scare when "Brooklyn", "Brooklyn" was terrorizing the square (Kid n play - Last night)

when I wasn't looking - someone yelled out "soft-soft Brooklyn (The Fat Boys - The House)
3006968, that and My Summer Vacation are the only two I can think of...
Posted by Dstl1, Wed Jun-27-18 01:48 PM
off top that went into any detail. A couple other "mentions" like Keith Murry - World B Free and a Roc Marcian - Major League. I'm sure there's a few I'm overlooking. As far as the country thing, I've traveled to other states or talked to people over the phone in other parts of the country and been told I had a Southern accent...even though I've never lived anywhere else.

but rappers from Detroit make whole songs about the city on every album they put out and rappers not from here have been literally chased out of town

for ATL tho its definitely Jim Jones on "Walk It Out" remix: "Im talking Magic City, even Body Tap"

god damn i loved Body Tap. lived right down Marietta St from there.

ODB from Mariah's "Fantasy":

"Yo, New York in the house
Is Brooklyn in the house
Uptown in the house
Shaolin are you in the house
Boogie Down are you in the house
Sacramento in the hoooouuuuuse!!!!!"

That always stuck out to me because 1) Sacramento out of all cities was the first non-NYC area he shouted out, and 2) I was living in Sac at the time that was on the radio so I wasn't sure if it was just a regional version or remix of the song..
3007460, * *Mind blown* *
Posted by NoDrawls McGraw, Wed Jul-18-18 01:53 PM
Never knew this.

Sactown is such a small city(granted the capital city of CA but still)that we're used to being takin for granted. When heads think of Cali, they usually think of the big 2, LA & Frisco.

That said, to have someone of ODB's stature from NYC mention Sac like that is kinda dope!

Thas whassup!

3007546, U God used to live in Sacramento

I mention it briefly in the book I wrote on the Wu.

Harlem gets a ton, but that one sticks out because that's two blocks from where I grew up.

Catch you rolling through Foster & TAFT, flossing that cash, the gangsters put the torch to that ass (c) Jim Jones

Pretty much any mention of Spanish Harlem/El Barrio, or the Taft, Wagner or Foster housing developments makes my ears perk up.
