3006389, What's your personal hometown hip-hop anthem?
Posted by adg87, Fri Jun-15-18 12:20 PM
For me, I'm a Philly cat (of a certain age...Let's just say that I was right there when Will Smith cut his teeth as a member of the Fantabulous Four in Wynnefield/West Philly) and if I had to pick one joint that for me sums up hip hop, I gotta go with Three Times Dope, "The Greatest Man Alive". Classic Philly Hip-Hop, that takes me right back to when I was already heads over heels in love with the music. STILL bangs in the whip too! It encapsulates trully Philly steez, and that hustla (Hilltop!) mentality. There are certainly others, (Schooly's Saturday Night is riiight there) but for me that's as good as it gets.

?
3006557, It's more a reaction to your naming of that cut.
Posted by adg87, Mon Jun-18-18 11:58 AM
Nothing to do with Old Skool itself. I'm proudly entrenched in the old skool disapora, being that I was there when Sugarhill (in all it's perceived corniness) was life blood to me and my crew.

I'm not trying to diss at all fam. It's just that particular song is not regularly disussed on OKP. Sorta like me referencing Fearless Four's "Just Rock" or Awesome Foursome's "Makossa". Only certain cats even know what the hell you're talkin about when you bring up joints like that. Relax C.

...the lower Westchester early 90s anthem, at least

3006650, That could go for almost any Pete Rock joint though, correct?
Posted by adg87, Tue Jun-19-18 12:14 PM
Like his catalog is so crazy that almost any joint could be someone's persoanl fave. I know a few cats from that area that swore by his music. All they rocked most of the time. LOL.
3006690, yeah but Creator is probably their most important song...
Posted by My_SP1200_Broken_Again, Wed Jun-20-18 08:23 AM
...without that record killing it in the clubs, they might not have had a chance to do Mecca ...dont get me wrong, "All Souled Out" is ALL dope, but "the Creator" was the single worthy party record that had people on the dance floor buggin out ..Funny how it launched their careers and CL only says like 3 words on it

3006718, Guilty Simpson-The Real Me b/w Elzhi-Love It Here
Posted by phemom, Wed Jun-20-18 05:37 PM
Guilty's record (produced by Black Milk) always reminds me of the super cloudy, sorta depressing but wholeheartedly Detroit days that we have all the time (if you haven't been to Detroit think of the Chedda Bob shoots himself in the dick scene in 8 Mile, like that). Even tho Guilty is talking about himself, other than the coke references that what it's like to be a black man in the D.

https://youtu.be/eh81kazhhE4

Elzhi's song (produced by Jay Dee) reminds me of the happy days Detroit has. Messing with women, the odd shadows that happen when the sun sets, the super late ass Ice Cream truck (the one that actually sells Ice Cream). This is weird considering that this song isn't all that happy, but the song makes me happy for some reason.

mostly because the best rappers to ever come out of Detroit are currently fully mature artists who are somehow STILL getting better

for ME, at various points it was
Chedda Boy Baby - East Side Chedda Boyz
Conant Gardens - Slum Village
Rock City - Royce
Losing Out - Black Milk & Royce (closest to permanent status)

current: Boblo Boat - Royce & J Cole

BUT tbh this is my actual Detroit anthem...but its not a hip hop song

I did a long sting in Medellin, maybe something from Explosion Negra but I feel like they have more of a coastal feel. Rap scene there is borderline pitiful though you do get some decent rappers doing their thing on the low occasionally.
