want to hear some Hiatus Kaiyote sampled tracks from 9th Wonder on this project. I also like how this part one is part of the title, which infers a part two will surface sometime down the line.

Oh, and of course it's going to be nice to near Black Thought black out over some competent beats as well.

Posted by MeshaMeesh, Fri May-25-18 04:28 PM
He’s been hinting at something new for about 3 weeks now. Also, his IG stories have been collages; each pic being added per frame or what have you.

I high key believe the collages are a visual rep of this EP’s content.

...and not just some unthought thru process and just Blackthought freestylin' over beats, I hope he puts his best foot forward and come correct with concepts and ideas, the same for Ninthwonder, he better go thru some of his hardest & smoothest uncirculated old & new joints for BT and come with the heat and not just some thrown together beats.

Posted by Brew, Fri May-25-18 10:45 PM
Haha. Thought's been concept-ing for the last 3 Roots albums. It'd be nice to just hear him spit again over dope production.

But with that said I'll be fine with whatever direction they choose. Just excited this is actually happening.

3005629, how so?
Posted by Stadiq, Sat May-26-18 11:02 PM

Im legit scratching my head over here.

If this is dope, how does 9th lose?
3005632, You're thinking that...
Posted by obsidianchrysalis, Sun May-27-18 01:09 AM
You're thinking that if the project is good than Thought will get the credit. But if it's wack, especially if the beats aren't quality, than 9th will get the blame?

I'll hold my opinion until it's released but I couldn't see Thought releasing a half-assed project. He would just wait until Endgame comes out to release more verses, I think.
3005649, I’m thinking regardless we are going to say...
Posted by Anonymous, Sun May-27-18 06:33 PM
This is dope but I really wanted to hear Thought over (insert producer) instead.

9th is cool but not for a project like this where we have literally been waiting since 96 for a solo from one of the absolute greatest MCs to ever live.

Stakes are already waaaay up there based on us waiting for so long for a Thought solo...now we expect 9th to come in with his weak ass drums and bless this after we are used to Thought spitting over the best drummer in hip-hop?

Shit is set up to fail.

But hey, I don’t even know what it is yet. This could be another God’s Stepson for all we know.

It damn sure better not be a Thought solo album that we’ve all been waiting for.
3005671, There are people out there...
Posted by _Torchbaras, Mon May-28-18 04:37 PM
That prefers 9ths snares over ?s. Like me. Hater.
3005672, I agree with him
Posted by Garhart Poppwell, Mon May-28-18 05:07 PM
The Soul Council has Nottz and Hi-Tek now though so I hope to hear more of them, especially Nottz, than 9th/E. Jones, etc.
3005686, Soul Council is a killer team and gettin crazier by the minute
Posted by _Torchbaras, Tue May-29-18 06:31 AM
Id like for AMP to get/chase more placements within JAMLA tho, but I guess he has other priorities
3005674, At the end of the day, this is all personal preference
Posted by obsidianchrysalis, Mon May-28-18 05:37 PM
But what about 9th's drums seem better than ?uest's? Is it just that ?uest's drums are 'live' and so they sound distinctly different from the drums of a producer which uses software?

I'm not coming at you, just want to hear your reasons.
3005685, Spot on really.
Posted by _Torchbaras, Tue May-29-18 06:29 AM
But as you stated, personal preference. To me, the production aesthetic Im lookin for in hip hop is electronically enhanced acoustics to the point where it becomes its own beast. I dont get that from Quest, I get a hell of alotta other dope feels. Just not that.
3005731, Cool.
Posted by obsidianchrysalis, Wed May-30-18 03:11 PM
3005676, So out of all producers, you would pick 9th to do this...
Posted by Anonymous, Mon May-28-18 07:39 PM
Long-ass awaited album from the nicest MC ever?

Equation just don’t work for me lol
3005684, Partially agree, (one of)... The nicest
Posted by _Torchbaras, Tue May-29-18 06:22 AM
Its not that 9th is at the very top of my list, its just that I got quest rather low on it, personal preference sh*t - I like my drums heavily processed and my melodies chopped LOL
3005640, checking for Thought's raps only
Posted by Garhart Poppwell, Sun May-27-18 11:37 AM
I'd rather hear him over Kev Brown or Oddisee than 9th at this point, he hasn't done a full project that I loved in over a decade.

Not only is he on the Tonight Show, but he's also working on a Roots album along with this project AND there is volume 1 in the title, which means more material will surface from this grouping. I'd be shocked if this was a full feature length album.
3005737, I know there must be a NOTTZ banger on this on Friday!

I am not complaining - just pointing it out.

can't wait to dig into this either way - still hopeful one of this many projects ahead is Black & Nickel joint with Royce - I have a weird optimistic feeling we are actually going to get that

@rob_starrk
3005759, i was hoping for a litte more but i'll take it
Posted by makaveli, Thu May-31-18 11:15 AM
especially if more stuff comes out in the next year or two. black and nickel would be dope.
3005760, They've both discussed it
Posted by rjc27, Thu May-31-18 11:17 AM
that song on Royce's "trust the shooter" mixtape with Thought / Eminem "Rap On Steroids" would presumably be on it. Royce keeps hinting at crazy projects this year and now BT is saying same so gives me hope. Plus there were sessions with those 2 and illmind.

Posted by DJR, Thu May-31-18 05:14 PM
I assumed it was about a podcast or something.

We’re getting 4 new Black Thought joints over some 9th tomorrow? Cool, will definitely check for that and I expect to like it.

I wasn’t holding out hope that Thought was dropping the Illmatic of ‘18 or anything with everybody’s dream producers all bringing their all time A game beats. I just like to hear him rap. Still like 9th’s beats too.
3005781, Apparently it’s a series
Posted by makaveli, Thu May-31-18 05:43 PM
So I’m guessing there will be more than two volumes. I’m not gonna complain about that.

So this is really just a teaser... Thats funny/not funny. Heres to hoping he will drop another volume so I can combine em and call it day LOL
3005782, It's, expectedly, good (& as we already knew, short, 17min to be exact)
Posted by IslaSoul, Thu May-31-18 06:12 PM

Black Thought's performance is excellent, 9th's production compliments him well.

With a playtime this tight, the composer gotta PLAY! I heard nothing that really caught my ear... Melodies are dull and yes, sadly forgettable! You cant have a barfest and a snoozefest at the same time... Goin back to Weather Or Not now.

Black Though more comfortable revealing more of himself.

One consistent thing is BT is dope but more technical than emotional or personal. Of course there have been exceptions over the years, but it pretty much hold true. But listening to this newer work, I get a better feeling for his mindstate, struggles, and emotions, while sacrificing none of the technicality.

The simplicity/repetition of the beats really gives room for the lyrics to shine. Whenever Thought stops rapping, you hear how much of the energy is coming from him and the the beats. Works here. This is dope listening.
3005873, Twofifteen is my fave joint easily

It's always great to have another gratitude joint that isn't steeped in some type of religiosity... just everyday gratitude that all of us experience. And of course this is why blanket statements like "Hip Hop is worse than drugs" will forever sound stupid to me. Name specific artists... but I digress.
My other two faves are Twofifteen and 9th vs Thought. He definitely opened up right with Twofifteen.

3006000, Hub sued them (link)
Posted by Nick Has a Problem...Seriously, Tue Jun-05-18 08:37 PM
Former Roots bassist Leonard "Hub" Hubbard is suing drummer Questlove, rapper Black Thought and the group's current manager over failure to pay him per a contract that allegedly made him co-owner of the band, TMZ reports.

Hubbard joined the budding hip-hop outfit in 1992 when they were still known as the Square Roots. He left the group in 2007 after being diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a type of blood cancer.

In the suit, Hubbard claims his deal with the band called for him to continue being paid as a co-owner, but the bassist alleges that he's received less compensation than other band members. Hubbard also claims a former unnamed manager for the Roots sent him a letter in 2014 threatening to cut off his health insurance and his portion of the band's revenue.

A representative for the Roots was not immediately available for comment.

Hubbard recorded seven albums with the Roots through 2006's Game Theory. A year after his departure, the bassist reunited with the band at the 2008 Roots Picnic for a performance of "Mellow My Man," and made another appearance in 2010.

The Roots have released four studio albums without Hubbard, along with collaborative records with John Legend, Elvis Costello and Betty Wright. The group also became the house band for Jimmy Fallon's Late Night in 2009, and have since followed him to The Tonight Show.

This was dope from beginning to end, even the guest appearances. Can't wait for the remaining tracks.
