3004368, Nas Album Done....for real this time?
Posted by DJR, Sun Apr-22-18 09:01 PM
Coming 6/15 with Kanye production....according to Kanye.

http://www.complex.com/music/2018/04/kanye-west-announces-nas-album-june
3004369, the prospect of kanye production no longer gets me excited.

i hope it turns out dope tho (if the project is really completed or even exists at all).

And yeah, I don’t see Kanye giving Nas his weird stuff. “Real Friends”, “No More Parties in LA”, etc....Kanye can still make the type of beats that Nas would sound good over IMO.

Hoping this is real. It’s been too long since Nas dropped an album.
3004393, The latter was Madlib, though.

Is the word that Kanye did the whole album of just had a hand in it by producing a few tracks or executive producing it?
3004381, Only word I’ve seen is from Kanye’s twitter
Posted by DJR, Mon Apr-23-18 10:01 AM
Kanye’s first tweet:

“I'm hand producing all the albums I tweeted about. Been chopping samples from the sunken place 😂Pusha May 25th My album June 1st me and Cudi June 8th and Teyana June 22nd and oh yeah...”

And then his next tweet:

“Nas June 15th”
3004385, It probably makes more sense
Posted by Numba_33, Mon Apr-23-18 10:58 AM
to wait for this news to come from the primary source or sources first rather than relying on Kanye.

Also, are Nas and Kanye on the same major label? How does Kanye reliably know Nas' label is solidly rolling out with the album for that date?
3004387, they’re both on Def Jam, but I agree
Posted by DJR, Mon Apr-23-18 11:10 AM
I’m cautiously optimistic about an album because this is the first I’ve heard of a Nas album since last spring, but.....until Nas and Def Jam put a release date on it it’s just speculation.
3004389, i hope kanye isn't doing the whole album

but if that's the case, these are some weird ass promo techniques

http://www.thefader.com/2018/04/24/kanye-west-ebro-radio-show-i-love-you

he did say he was chopping samples from the 'sunken place' before all that Trump hoopla:
https://allhiphop.com/news/kanye-west-i-ve-been-chopping-samples-from-the-sunken-place-D9-6ajB5NE6jASrU3Zq6Eg/?full=1
so i guess in a way this is all deliberate

Thing is Nas doesn't have to put out music for financial gain anymore. He made it big investing in companies over the last 10 years or so. Anything weak he puts out can only taint his legacy. That's probably why he is in no hurry to release that album.

If Ye is focused and is truly pumping out high quality beats, the joke would probably be on all of us come june. It's only 7 tracks each, but for a Ye solo, Pusha, Teyana, Ye & Kudi AND a Nas project that's already 35 hot beats needed. I don't know... i don't see it happening, also marketing wise they would all be competing against each other as well.
3004488, What A Waste

This is something Kanye tweeted and is the only one who has mentioned it.

Nas and Primo were on a magazine cover together for their album.

Plus, Nas and Primo has proven to be a much better duo than Nas and Kanye.

Also, i haven't heard a verse from Nas that wasn't dope since Life Is Good, so why would i want him to retire? i don't want anyone still in their prime to retire. i want rappers to do this shit for life like rockers do. if they decide to retire, that's their choise, but why would i want someone still at the top of his craft to retire? that's dumb.
3004513, pretty sure Nas wishes Kanye would STFU

bout this trump stuff...
3004540, That's Why It's A Total Waste Of Energy
Posted by Dj Joey Joe, Thu Apr-26-18 10:03 AM
Nas needs a focused producer to bring him back to the Queesbridge sound not on some weird fantasy who's not even in their right mind right now to be fucking up their image.

That's why I said it was a waste, conyay is the last person Nas should be working with these days; I know some people are tired of hearing about the Nas & Premier collaboration album but the fact we all know it would be great for Nas and he needs one in the can to bring back his career to the streets, but doing another commercial album for the tmz fans isn't worth the energy.

Personally I wouldn't mind a Nas, Large Pro, & Akinyele album, with Extra P rhyming ^ doing all the production as well, and titling the album "Back At The Barbeque", I can see them really putting good concepts and laying down some of their best lyrics together.

Infact what happened to the Nas & AZ album, that would be nice to hear, what really would be dope if Nas did an album with Kool G. Rap and had producers like Havoc, Alchemist, Ayatollah, etc. doing production.

I just figured Nas is quiet because he's never been the best at promoting and the Ye tweet was really all we needed.

Adam & Eve, Bonjour, and I Can Explain are dope. Everything is a dope overall song with a workable but meh beat. Cops suffers from annoying vocal sample ala Faithful and Testify, but way worse, and overall meh lyrics. Not For Radio is a very bland and lame Black Republicans sounding beat. This doesn't hold a candle to Black Thought's EP.

I never came around on Common’s “Testify”.

It might’ve partly been my subconscious wanting Rick to continue rapping because I know that song by heart and can’t help but expect the next line to come, leaving me kinda disoriented when that shit keeps repeating.

I like it as a hook a lot.

Still, Nas made Cops Keep Firing a decade ago and it was better. Fair? Probably not.
3006375, This is pretty dope
Posted by go mack, Fri Jun-15-18 06:27 AM
I will need a few spins to decide how much I like it but enjoyed it first listen. I loved Cops but the sample may wear on me.

Im also not sure the order of the tracklisting or what I got is the final mix.
3006376, RE: tracklist
Posted by bills, Fri Jun-15-18 08:10 AM
I haven't played the album yet, but I caught the last 2 songs of the release party live stream. The tracklist I've seen that seems to reflect the order played at the release party is the one that goes:
1. Not for Radio
2. Cops
3. I'm Gonna Have to Leave You
4. Bonjour
5. Everything
6. Adam & Eve
7. Simple Things
3006377, RE: tracklist
Posted by go mack, Fri Jun-15-18 08:32 AM
Yeah, that's what I have on mine and seems correct. I couldn't see it starting with Everything with that being so long and about 3 minutes before Nas first verse even comes in.

I have a slight glitch on Not for the Radio last verse around snitch, not sure if that's gonna get fixed but bugs me. lol

This has more of a Distant Relatives vibe from Nas, doing his preachy stuff which I'm not a super fan of but I think its overall pretty good.
3006383, I like everything except IGHTLY, Not For Radio and Simple Things
Posted by Boogie Stimuli, Fri Jun-15-18 10:12 AM
The beats for the aforementioned songs should never make the cut on a 7-track album.

I never would've guessed that I'd like a song where The-Dream and Kanye sing the chorus, but I really like "Everything." I'd heard the complaints about the vocal sample on "Cops" but the only thing I didn't like about it was that it had a Kanye verse. It does a good job of capturing the feeling it's going for imo. Bonjour has a decent beat with a nice chorus. Adam and Eve is just classic Nas.
3006388, That's like half the album though lol

3006530, I said what I said. Yall gonna go ahead and cry or nah?
Posted by Boogie Stimuli, Sun Jun-17-18 10:08 PM
>not "everything, but HALF the album"

Lol. Since yall are being technical then, 3 songs isn't half of a 7-track album. It's 42.8% and half is 50% counting by songs lol. Since we're having fun tho, let's count by time. The whole album clocks in at 26:35. The songs I don't like total about 8:28 which is actually only 31.4% of the album. So you're wrong even in your attempted correction (you're 18.6% off). Maybe technicalities aren't for you. If you're gonna be technical about such insignificant details, at least get them right.

Always funny what yall choose to argue about. Lesson mofos man, I swear.
Kinda fascinating how 3 of yall responded and said nothing about what I said about the music... but how I stated how many songs I liked, even though the meaning of what I said was perfectly clear.
Do yourself a favor and learn some basic math tho. It'll enrich your life in ways you never imagined lol.

Take a look, it's in a book, etc.

Vocals so fucking loud you can't bump the music.

Shit mixes. and I want to like these songs.

Nas holds his own but his FLOW is so stunted, disjointed.

And Nas always sounds like he just writes and never really plans endings for his verses. So many end awkwardly.

But Cops is dope as fuck. Frustrating.

Truth...and on another note, after two listens front to back, just don't think Nas sounds good over Kanye beats...just not a fit, and falls in-line with his historic poor ear to choose the right beats to spit over. Nas wants to come more experimental with the beats, those Cocain 80's brothers did it better for him....Maybe 2-3 songs I would listen to again...
3006468, that album boring too. At least Thought rapping his ass off

guess worth the wait altho should have had that done before release date. lol

also puffy interludes added to Not for Radio. Im gonna have to leave you is renamed to White Label with extra verse and sound better

not sure if other changes yet
3006447, Hopefully they fix “Cops” so Nas isn’t rapping over the Slick Rick vocals
Posted by DJR, Sat Jun-16-18 08:24 AM
Because that’s my only real complaint, now that I finally got the album. If they kept that sample for the intro and hook and cut it off when Nas is rapping, I’d like it a lot better.

I don’t dislike any of the songs.

Adam and Eve is my early favorite. I like Simple Things a lot, but that abrupt ending on such a short song? Felt like an odd ending for it to just stop.

I don’t usually go for the long dramatic Kanye songs, but Everything is pretty good.

I like Bonjour a lot too.
3006455, RE: New mix is much better
Posted by xangeluvr, Sat Jun-16-18 10:14 AM
I still think the mix sounds like junk. Or maybe it's just that kanye's drums are still weak as shit. Cops for sure is terrible. That sample is one of the most annoying I've heard in a long time.
3006461, Rode around with it today
Posted by go mack, Sat Jun-16-18 02:34 PM
let it play a few times and this is really growing on me. I went from initial disappointment to loving it now which is weird as usually music doesn't grow on me like that. The only thing I thought was awkward is the Fox News lyric and the vaccination stuff a little unnecessary, everything else is fine. I think Nas rides the beats well, slows down his flow on some but it works for me. The Cops shot the Kid sample doesn't annoy me like it does others and I love Nas verse, simple but paints a picture effectively like only he can. Kanye's verse is fine but coming from him after his earlier bullshit is I'm not really sure...

I'm in the minority that likes this better than Thought's EP I'm sure. That was dope but the songs all sounded pretty much the same and blend together where this is more memorable to me with each song standing on its own. I feel like I will listen to this one much more.
3006471, Nas lost

I’ve never said that before, this just isn’t that good.
3006514, Surprisingly underwhelming
Posted by The Analyst, Sun Jun-17-18 08:11 PM
Some of the beats go, other are very mediocre and/or out of place. Nas obviously still spits like a monster however content wise it's kinda standard-issue Nas shit IMO. (Also he talks about a food a real lot on this album.)

How the fuck they ever thought White Label was worthy of being on a 7-song album is beyond me.

I'm probably not alone in wishing we got an album full of Adam & Eve style beats.

This is my least favorite album of the Wyoming Sessions, and that's counting Kanye's literally unfinished rough draft of an album.

3006519, Yaaaaaaawn - these beats are sleepy time.
Posted by Brew, Sun Jun-17-18 08:53 PM
Nas sounds disjointed on them. No feeling, no soul, no bounce to any of them. Lifeless.

Kanye's 1-4 IMO and that's being generous since I like only half of Pusha's album. These albums are very clearly being rushed and the beats sound half-baked, sparse, soulless. Nas sounds surprisingly uninspired on this album. Sad that we had to wait 6 years just to hear Kanye ruin the God MC.

Hopefully we will ultimately hear some of the work from the past 6 years that was supposed to be the new Nas album. Has to be better than this rush job.
3006558, RE: Yaaaaaaawn - these beats are sleepy time.
Posted by spidey, Mon Jun-18-18 11:58 AM
Agreed...again, Nas beat choice is horrible...He chooses Kanye to do all the production, again, bad choice...Alchemist, EL-P (a real boundary pusher, while keeping it fly), Exile (would have laced him), and even 9th would have been better choices...
3006909, I want to live in a Nas & Rick Ross bizarro world
Posted by j., Tue Jun-26-18 08:28 AM
where Nas raps over Rick Ross beats and vice versa

Rick Ross is the most one-dimensional gimmicky rapper of all time
but his beats are INCREDIBLE

Nas is the most gifted lyricist of all time
but his beats are ATROCIOUS

I give up trying to comprehend how a legend of Nas' status just can't pick producers and beats

3006535, Um, I guess I like some stuff on the back half... maybe?

"White Label," "Adam & Eve," and "Simple Things" are cool enough. "everything" is overlong, but I like most of the rhymes. But this is pretty unremarkable overall. Feels like the music half was mailed in, and Nas doesn't seem that interested on the mic.
3006617, Disappointed on first listen; it's grown on me since then

My main issue is it's been about 6 years since Life is Good so to get a 7 track EP/album after all that time this Nasir project needed to be bulletproof, undeniable greatness and it's not.

It doesn't sound as good as Daytona or Kids See Ghosts. Every song has something mix-wise that's annoying or not as strong as it should be considering the parties involved.

Vocally, Nas doesn't sound crisp with the flow, not addressing directly the Kelis accusations is a bad look, and "dropping knowledge" Nas tends to be rough sailing factually.

With all that said, I do find myself replaying it and liking it now that the initial "it's not what I wanted" feeling has went away. Some of the samples and hooks are stuck in my head in a good way.

Overall I think I'll feel better about this album if it's not the sole-follow up to Life is Good and is more of a stopgap holdover until a "real" Nas solo later this year/early 2019.

I don't like the beat anymore because its just a loop. ALC didn't FLIP IT ENOUGH!

Flip it enough? Flip these. Flip off. Go flip some f*cking burgers.(c)Kno

...would love to see that, but Nas ain't plugged in like that anymore...There are so many producers that would have laced him, it's a shame. Said it once, will say it again, after waiting 6 years for a project, his fans deserve more.
3006895, I'm digging it, but I'm also thinking that...
Posted by obsidianchrysalis, Mon Jun-25-18 08:04 PM
I'm also thinking that the album Nas was working on (the album DJ Khalid refers to on Nas Album Done) is still coming out. So, I'm still half thinking that NASIR is a teaser or a way to whet our appetites for the appearance of the main course of the 'real' album he made.

Granted I'm not into music as I was even two years ago, but I wasn't anticipating anything for this album. Judging from the replies, it sounds that many of you had some high expectations for this album. I know when my expectations don't get met that I dislike the project at first and then settle into it after some time once the memory of the disappointment fades.

I wonder if this album will be the same in your eyes. That the music will sound better once the taste of disappointment melts away.
3006897, Why am I the only one that thinks...

“Nas Album Done” was referring to DJ Khalid’s album being done?

As in, “Nas laced it and now the album is complete”...

Lol

(I've got) Nas (on this joint?!) Album Done!

??
3006913, Exactly

I can see them in the studio now.

All songs are complete except for this last one because no one can ever get ahold of Nas.

He finally shows up to the studio after months of people scheduling him.

He kills this joint and Khaled stands up and throws his hands in the air feeling an excited sense of relief and yells...

“Nas. Album done!”

He asks Nas what the title is so he can wrap everything up and Nas replies through a haze of smoke “I don’t know man...I ain’t got a title”

And Khaled says “we name dis shit Nas Album Done cuz WE DA BESSSS!”

I bet this exchange actually happened. Word for word.
3006918, Because Nas was actually saying his album was done
Posted by DJR, Tue Jun-26-18 11:18 AM
You could be right. But around that time, Nas was saying his album was done. Hell, he even said it on that song. So to me it felt like a way to help both of them by giving Khaled a banger for his album and to build hype for Nas upcoming album(that he said was done!)

3006898, I think all of them have other albums except Teyana lol
Posted by phemom, Mon Jun-25-18 11:32 PM
...and I think Push,Nas and Cudi should drop another project later this year.

All of them were like 20 minutes of music and none of them are enough to chill for another 2 years IMO. Use the attention and double up on these EPs and then tour after that.
3006938, Solid album is the conclusion I’ve come to
Posted by DJR, Tue Jun-26-18 10:23 PM
Alright, I’ve been playing the album a lot since it dropped. Overall, I’m glad we got this. Would I put it in the top half of Nas’ catalog? No. So by Nas standards, it’s so so. By 2018 rap standards it’s great. I’m just happy we’re still getting quality rapping out of Nas at 44. 27 years since he first appeared on wax. Crazy.

Yes, his flow is pretty basic on most of these. But the bars are still sharp.

Not for Radio is one I’ve started skipping. It’s not bad but as others have said, he’s done the epic “Nas is back!” Intro much better on Stillmatic and Life Is Good. The rapping is fine, the beat is mediocre. Puffy seems unnecessary. He’s too corny at this point. At least his rants were legit funny on Hate Me Now. He’s not really bringing anything to the table here.

Cops...like many I hated the repetitive sample at first. I think part of it was me being subconsciously frustrated because I expected the next Slick Rick lines to follow...it’s a song I’ve probably heard 1000s of times. I’ve listened enough to where it doesn’t distract me any more. I love what Kanye did with it on the hook. The beat bangs. Both verses go. The content is needed. This one is a winner.

White label- I don’t care about this song at all. Nas sounds sleepy, his sex raps are gross as always, and while the vocal sample gets in my head a bit, the beat is mediocre overall.

Bonjour - Damn! Nas sounds noticeably livelier than on the last song. That sample and beat, Nas rapping about good food and shit.... I like this one.

Everything....too long. I don’t usually like singing Kanye but it works here. Great song. It could’ve been 5:30 instead of 7:00 though. My only complaint. You don’t need to make it extra long for it to be “epic”, Kanye. But Nas is spitting here, I like the vibe, message, and singing.

Adam and Eve....best song on the album. 5/5. 10/10. This is so classic. Nas sounds completely in his comfort zone here. Like, you can tell he’s going to absolutely destroy this right from the beginning. Damn, this is so good.

Simple Things....yes! Love Nas in this mode. That sample is heavenly. Beat is a little plain otherwise but that’s ok when Nas is rapping like this. But.....why does it end so suddenly?

5/7. Pretty good. So happy we got this! Really hope we get a longer album sooner than later though.

Nas still the GOAT.
