3002052, Phonte No News Is Good News
Posted by ry 213, Thu Mar-01-18 09:39 AM
Dropping tonight at midnight!!!
3002056, was this a secret before today?
Posted by makaveli, Thu Mar-01-18 10:04 AM
i didn't know this was happening, good news.
3002057, I believe he first announced it as a late 2016 album
Posted by Oak27, Thu Mar-01-18 10:09 AM
Then as the initial release date was approaching he changed it to TBA and assured everyone it was coming, he just needed to get it right.
3002060, NO WAY - where are you seeing this ? I won't believe it.

Hyped...but somebody has to ask it, is he in MC mode on this joint? singing? Both?

3002089, Willing to bet both

Like, 75% rapping and the rest singing.

3002111, Cry No More....jeez, that’s a deep one
Posted by DJR, Fri Mar-02-18 12:44 AM
Stayed up to buy it and give it that first listen. Beautiful album.

Happy to hear a Big Pooh shoutout too.
3002161, You're in luck
Posted by Dr Claw, Fri Mar-02-18 02:51 PM
because this album is more like 90/10 rappin'.

And it's EXCELLENT rappin'.
3002095, Five songs in and he's in -full- MC mode
Posted by IslaSoul, Thu Mar-01-18 06:29 PM
and not joking around.
3002113, RE: rapping, and dope rapping at that
Posted by rmcphedr, Fri Mar-02-18 04:00 AM
Man, what a week. Black Milk, Roc Marcy and Phonte
3002096, After first listen
Posted by IslaSoul, Thu Mar-01-18 06:54 PM
This is very good
10 songs, 33min, 2 guests
9 songs of Phonte rappin' & absolutely killin it
starts hard, mellows out towards the end
Don't really understand a choice that was made for one particular song (which I think is also the weakest link on the album, but still a good song)
3002098, leaked, or do you have any advance copy?
Posted by seandammit, Thu Mar-01-18 07:43 PM
jesus, I can't believe in 2018 I am clamoring to hear music that I don't have instant access to lol.
3002099, RE: leaked, or do you have any advance copy?
Posted by spidey, Thu Mar-01-18 07:53 PM
Word up...ain't been this hyped to hear a new release in years...
3002107, Same haha. Been waiting on this.
Posted by Brew, Thu Mar-01-18 11:05 PM
3002110, It was already midnight in europe, so it was on spotify here before U.S. n/m
Posted by IslaSoul, Thu Mar-01-18 11:52 PM
3002108, 12 minutes to go y’all.
Posted by ChampD1012, Thu Mar-01-18 11:48 PM
3002114, Phonte is the best. I really like it. It's just too effing short.
Posted by Brew, Fri Mar-02-18 09:38 AM
10 songs, 2 under 2 minutes, many of them dominated by interludes ... I want more damnit.

That said I really like it. "Cry No More" and "Such is Life" stick out after first listen.

Why he ain't wanna rap with Freddie ?

Phonte can rap his ass off, man.
3002121, Expensive Genes
Posted by LeroyBumpkin, Fri Mar-02-18 10:55 AM
Dude.

What. A. Song.
What. A. Concept.
What. A. Story.

After one listen it's definitely the best song on the album.
3002122, That was the song I told myself I needed to go back to immediately.
Posted by Brew, Fri Mar-02-18 10:57 AM
Cause I was distracted and kinda lost the concept. Excited to listen to it more intently.
3002123, Yup, that was incredible
Posted by DJR, Fri Mar-02-18 11:19 AM
On first listen, I thought that and Cry No More were the same song with a beat change.

Because one leads into the other perfectly.
3002125, I THOUGHT THIS TOO
Posted by Brew, Fri Mar-02-18 11:27 AM
>On first listen, I thought that and Cry No More were the same
>song with a beat change.
>
>Because one leads into the other perfectly.
3002164, Incredible song...dude is a treasure
Posted by Stadiq, Fri Mar-02-18 03:36 PM

Still processing the album but this joint and
Cry No More legit stopped me in my tracks
so to speak.

I really wish he released more rap music, cuz
a lot of his songs/topics really hit home

3002124, He's just flexing in the beginning, then gets into some REAL SHIT
Posted by Oak27, Fri Mar-02-18 11:25 AM
all while still flexing his skills.

Phonte will forever be in my top 5 favorites.
3002126, He kinda did the same thing on Charity Starts at Home.
Posted by Brew, Fri Mar-02-18 11:29 AM
I like the strategy.

Although on Charity the "flexing" portion included a lot of "real shit" as well, ex. "The Good Fight"
3002409, Speaking of Charity Starts at Home.....does Median still rap?
Posted by DJR, Tue Mar-06-18 11:38 PM
Anyone know? I haven’t heard his name in years.
3002420, His last album (The Sender) was released under +FE in 2011
Posted by IslaSoul, Wed Mar-07-18 07:28 AM
but he's not (or no longer) listed as artist @ +FE
so I don't know if he's still active as a recording artist.
3002424, Right, I enjoyed that album
Posted by DJR, Wed Mar-07-18 10:16 AM
I thought of him because he was on Charity Starts at Home, and the Sender came out around the same time.

Was looking on YouTube and only finding songs that were 5-6 years old.
3002540, median is always one of my favorite cats to listen to
Posted by SsenepoD, Fri Mar-09-18 04:05 PM
hope he's doing well
3002132, RE: Phonte No News Is Good News
Posted by BlackLex, Fri Mar-02-18 12:55 PM
Exceptional album.

A lot of parallels to 4:44. Short but dense. Well-executed. Mature themes.

A lot of replay value.

3002139, my opinion from the GD post...Phonte is a PHENOMENAL rapper...
Posted by Dstl1, Fri Mar-02-18 01:10 PM
like just forget it. It's mind-blowing how good he is at rap. Don't even seem like it's hard for him, either.
3002144, And my very similar response haha ...
Posted by Brew, Fri Mar-02-18 01:21 PM
>like just forget it. It's mind-blowing how good he is at
>rap. Don't even seem like it's hard for him, either.

^^ my exact point in that post was that the most impressive part is how effortless he makes it all sound and feel. Like he's not trying at all.
3002154, My only complaint
Posted by xangeluvr, Fri Mar-02-18 01:55 PM
And it's the same complaint I have with the new Elzhi joint too is that every song has basically the same mellow tempo and vibe. At least on first couple listens. It's very short so it keeps my attention, but on both albums I would have personally preferred a switch up here and there.
3002178, A master of his craft
Posted by IslaSoul, Fri Mar-02-18 06:11 PM

He really came into his own with this one.
peak songwriting/lyrics/performance/confidence

And I think we really got spoiled with this -and- Black Milk -and- Elzhi & Khrysis who all, in different ways, perfected their craft.

3002195, Facts.

I gotta give Black Milk more spins. Everytime he drops an album it's so ... unique and new I need to sit with it a few times to appreciate the crazy shit he's doing on the production tip.
3002186, Excellent
Posted by Kosa12, Fri Mar-02-18 08:22 PM
"Sweet You", "Expensive Genes" and "Cry No More" are my favorites right now - overall this is great.
3002206, Phonte is a treasure to this thing called rap and music
Posted by ChampD1012, Sat Mar-03-18 03:55 AM
Album is ridiculous...

Effortless...

One of the best releases in 2018...

I know it’s only March but still.
3002207, this rap shit really aint that hard
Posted by Amritsar, Sat Mar-03-18 08:17 AM

It sounds like its gotten even easier for him as time goes on

3002208, Phonte can do no wrong in my eyes. Been following since the beginning.
Posted by BNueve, Sat Mar-03-18 08:22 AM
Love the way he crafts his songs and albums. I could be totally wrong, but he just seems like a good dude. Always willing to talk and take pics after shows and puts in work on stage. Great album as expected.
3002220, He does seem like a good dude. And he's unapologetic bout who he is.
Posted by Brew, Sat Mar-03-18 01:26 PM
Which just makes me like him so much more. His brutal honesty is hella endearing. And it doesn't hurt that he's so fucking good on the mic.

Posted by Garhart Poppwell, Sat Mar-03-18 07:44 PM
I love how he brought back that Listening-era flow for Such is Life, he sounds sharp at all levels.
3002251, Yea I'm pretty sure "Such is Life" is my favorite track thus far.
Posted by Brew, Sun Mar-04-18 12:37 AM
You nailed it re: him bringing back his LB flow, and I love the mix of the instrumental and voice/singing during the verses. Is that background singing a sample ?

Speaking of which, any production credits yet ?
3002259, haven't seen any prod cred yet
Posted by Garhart Poppwell, Sun Mar-04-18 01:18 PM
I was looking yesterday but didn't find anything. The vocal sounds like an in-studio sample as opposed to one off a record, but I'm not sure.
3002271, Yea I think you're probably right.
Posted by Brew, Sun Mar-04-18 07:00 PM
>The vocal
>sounds like an in-studio sample as opposed to one off a

3002264, I was on Twitter Phonte listing who did production on the album
Posted by DJR, Sun Mar-04-18 05:21 PM
But I haven’t see anything as far as who did what.
3002274, Genius has partial credits...

3. Pastor Tigallo: King Karnov

My favorite cut on the album.
3002273, Dope album...
Posted by Anonymous, Sun Mar-04-18 08:16 PM
While I don’t mind 10 track albums...this one is a bit short. If you do 10 tracks I would prefer for them to all be full songs.

With that said...that’s the only complaint. Album is dope as hell and I’ll be playing it for a while.
3002278, Verse 2 of "Help Me God" is a rap clinic...just nasty stuff, man...

3002422, the correlation between extensive touring and artistic/performative
Posted by IslaSoul, Wed Mar-07-18 07:51 AM
evolution has probably been discussed on okp in the past,
but I still want to point out how this is applicable to
so many artists. Black Thought/The Roots being the most visible.

I can't remember a year where I didn't see any tourdates for Little Brother /Phonte/Foreign Exchange...and you can hear the progress in Phonte's performance..
Dude is nearing his 40's and in peak condition when it comes to MC-ing...

And like someone else said in this thread, So Help Me God is a rap clinic.

3002450, phonte has always been a top tier mc..but these beats ain't doing

I remember having a petty (on my part) back and forth with him here back in the day..

Very cool if that's him..

Excellent album, sir gravy
3002771, is there a clean/edited version available?

3002760, Welcome back rappin' Phonte
Posted by Ishwip, Fri Mar-16-18 01:48 PM
Dope lines, topical, stories. Raps haha!

My gripes are minor. I wish the album was just a little longer (like 2 tracks longer). The beats are good with some leaning to serviceable. Nothing I feel the urge to skip especially with how good the verses are, but I would have liked a 9th or Khrysis soul-boom-bap type joint or two. Just one or two haha.

Otherwise, great album and "Such is Life" is everything.

Enjoyable video too.

3006314, crib dope as shit too
Posted by GROOVEPHI, Wed Jun-13-18 10:34 AM
funny, I was just catching up on QLS yesterday and Quest asked Phonte what he's been up to, dude replied he was redoing his master bathroom. He said he has 2.5 bathrooms. That crib in the video can't have only 2.5 bathrooms lol.
