3001371, Aceyalone & Fat Jack Album... YUP!
Posted by moonsatellite, Thu Feb-08-18 08:01 PM
Acey's labyrinth lyricism & Fat Jack's hypnotic loops...

You know how it sounds. Banging.

3001373, Yea I checked out about half of this last week and liked it a lot.

Haven't got around to finishing but it's because I want to give it proper focus.

I'm a big Aceyalone fan but haven't heard a ton of Fat Jack's production (that I know of) but I was impressed.
3001517, He had some real genius early production

A-Team - Maskaraid Pt 1 & 2 (part 2 is bananas)

I'd like to see if there's a Fatjack beat tape dub floating around somewhere from the 90's.
3001521, Word thanks. These are dope. And I should clarify ...
Posted by Brew, Tue Feb-13-18 11:42 AM
... that I know of his Project Blowed contributions back in the day but not much beyond that ... like I said, at least as far as I know. I'm sure I've heard some of his beats without knowing they were his. That type of thing.
3001525, Oh i got you. yeah to be honest I haven't been keeping up
Posted by T Reynolds, Tue Feb-13-18 12:07 PM
real interested in seeing what he's been doing, including this project

not plugged into blowed at all anymore and haven't been for years
3001526, Yea same here .. I've followed Acey a little bit but outside him no one.

3001638, you was a blowed head?
Posted by astralblak, Thu Feb-15-18 09:31 PM
I hated that shit back in the day... my boy loved them fuckers and would drive from Palmdale to be in Leimert, lol

but when Ava dropped when the west was one, it really recontextualized them for me and I went a bit of a binge...

they really some of the most talented rappers ever and they still hella obsucre

shit I even ended up in a cipher with P.E.A.C.E circa 2012 just marveling at how gifted he was with writtens and off the top (like for real of the top)
3001641, Haha why'd you hate it ?
Posted by Brew, Thu Feb-15-18 10:51 PM
>I hated that shit back in the day...
3001650, I was at the Blowed like every Thursday for a couple summers
Posted by T Reynolds, Fri Feb-16-18 11:34 AM
even went to 5th St Dicks once w/ a homegirl who was cool with Billy Higgins.

Used to go to a lot of the Unity shows and also Blowed affiliated shows away from Project Blowed, in downtown, wherever. Usually 2mex or Shapeshifters, or OMD, xololanxinxo, Busdriver, Ellay Khule all that. like the Afterlife jams.

I was always a fellowship fan since like junior high. When Innercity Griots dropped that was my SHIT. I got that whole album memorized. Then I found out they had a FIRST first album. When they did the reunion show at the Whiskey in 98 I was in the front row. Saw PEACE throw a dude off the stage at Midnight Sun. Saw Acey serve three NYC emcees in a row at the Blowed one time.

Anyway since I was at Fat Beats a lot and always taping the Wake Up Show I was kinda on my East Coast shit, but by like 98 I was hearing about Log Cabin, Universals, all these weird rap crews in LA.... Shapeshifters. And getting weird ass dubs of dubs along with Fellowship stuff I had never heard before that was live or never released. Shit like The Day I Put On My Uniform, Metrognome, Surfin Tsunami, Farmer's Market (before it dropped on OD's Beneath the Surface), the whole freestyle from the Good Life that you see part of here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bMsKY0SEf9I (by the way that's a great channel for Blowed shit)

Yeah I was heavy into Blowed for several years lol

Around 2000 I saw a screening of Freestyle that they did at NYU actually, that had some Blowed footage http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0262424/, and I was on fire for days! The peace footage in there was dope by the way. I met the director briefly of This is the Life when they did a screening at an actual movie theater near MSG out here and was really taken aback by how warm and genuine she was. Good to see she has gone on to do big things.

3001680, dope. thanks for sharing

3001639, So that means you know about Jack’s Cater to the DJ double CD...?

3001642, I know of it but never heard it. Worth checking out I assume ?

3001381, I remember years ago Fat Jack came out with a compilation
Posted by Soletaker, Fri Feb-09-18 05:16 AM
I thought it was dope. Gonna have to check this out. Been years since I brought a Acey album.
3001516, The Cater to the DJ comp
Posted by T Reynolds, Tue Feb-13-18 11:11 AM
It was hit or miss but had some real classics on it

Counter Cloudwise
Sixteen Cents
I'm Khule
It's a Packed House

Lots of filler though

The thing that I loved about Blowed is that the beats are grimy and weird. Fat Jack's production kind of mainstream-izes the songs but with that you get a loss of the quirkiness and innovation that makes Blowed projects more interesting. It's solid but kind of unimaginative at times.

3001519, He definitely stepped it up in terms of quality from the likes
Posted by natenate101, Tue Feb-13-18 11:36 AM
of C.V.E. but I also like their weirdness and more DIY flavor as well. At that time it seemed everything coming out of that camp was so organic and exciting.

As for Cater To The Dj comps, Packed House is that shit!!! Wish we had more PEACE to go back to. Southern Fry'd Chicken album was disappointing but that song is crazy.
I actually prefer the second album. It's got joints like Keep rockin On and Talk To Ya Brotha. Interludes are fresh too
https://youtu.be/m7llogCTJHM

Regardless of of style preferences it's clear Fat Jack is underrated and it's good to hear him do his thing on this Acey album.
3001524, yeah the production on the second comp got fuller and cleaner
Posted by T Reynolds, Tue Feb-13-18 12:06 PM
I was only disappointed that SFC was so short! The beats were way different from other more jazzy blowed shit but I think that's the style Peace was going for. I like the crazy hi-hats and synth on Southwest Rider and Already Gone, i think he sounds great on there.

I remember I saw this doc where it was supposed to be J Smoov with Peace aka Vines and Mikah 9 for a whole project but it never came out. I wonder if that was what led to the song Viles w/ Mikah and Peace (one of the better post-FF collabs between former fellowship)

Anyway, I always wondered if it was Fat Jack that produced the original Where's the Sniper, by Volume 10, since he did most of Hip-Hopera.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hpcFbHOQ_Wc

^^^ this right here will be on loop for 10+x from time to time. Love this shit.
3001543, What did you think of P.E.A.C.E's "Megabite" album?

Also if you need more PEACE to go back to, you need to check his soundcloud. Scroll down to the stuff he was posting 5-6 years ago, you might not have all of those.

https://soundcloud.com/mtulazaji-davis

Missing You is jamming. It's still pretty lazy lyrically, but that's PEACE's mo. He's styling the hell out of some really basic raps.
"OMEZY'S,ISZY'S, & KISZY'S" is another nice one, it might be 12-13 years old at this point.
"What You Gone Do" more classic PEACE. Dude finishes rapping like 40 seconds into the song, but it's still bumps.
3001548, Megabyte had some joints but overall wasn't fulfilling
Posted by natenate101, Tue Feb-13-18 07:20 PM
Thought he was lazy on most of it, and the beats were pretty flimsy. Connected Functions was damn near perfection though. He needs the right beats. PEACE with Fat Jack is what if really wanna see. He could wild out over some jazzy shit and it would work. Thanks for the SoundCloud link. I'm "friends" with Peace on FB but he don't post anything there. Jup is pretty good about responding though and it doesn't seem like there is any FF movements on the horizon unfortunately. They just did a show though with the 3 that still live in LA. Peace seems to be on the periphery.

Packed House and Talk to ya brotha were so good man.

As for old shit, this is the one I always go back to.

Wish there was a studio version of that and Sand To the Beach from Myka.
3001551, A poorly mixed version of "Sand to the Beach" can be found "Timetable"

It's a shame that more people didn't recognize the brilliance.
Nowadays it would be impossible for such a compelling collective of highly talented, artsy folk to fly so far under the radar.
3001594, My guy... I STILL jones to hear that song
Posted by T Reynolds, Wed Feb-14-18 04:21 PM
Sand to the Beach is fucking amazing

best beat, best chorus, best verses by Mikah, really a hidden gem

produced by a dude named Punisher?

I read the liner notes and it said he was the type of guy that never smiled and even he had to cheese when he heard Mikah on the beat

3001599, @MicMjestic, I have Timetable as that's where I know the track from
Posted by natenate101, Wed Feb-14-18 05:31 PM
but it seems we all would like a polished version of that gem.

I peeped Megabyte again on YouTube yesterday, been awhile.liked it more than I remembered though it's still doesn't have the charm and unpredictability of the earlier PEAcE/FF stuff.

Punish produced the OG Headaches and Woes plus Anywhere You Go off of All Balls...
Didn't know he did Sand To The Beach but props to him for that.

Fun fact,PEACE shoved me out of a picture a girl friend of mine was taking with him, Acey and Ab Rude in SF. Thought I was trying to photobomb. Haha. He was really on a different level that night. Seems pretty Out There.
3001595, Good looks on his soundcloud, might have to travel back in time
Posted by T Reynolds, Wed Feb-14-18 04:24 PM
to see those old tracks you're talking about

I agree Megabytes was undercooked, but yeah Connected Functions was another gem out of nowhere, a true classic of the Blowed discography

I remember when peace got in his accident and going to his benefit show. Dude I performed with once in LA from this group Afronauts was in a car following him when it happened. After that seemed like he lost touch with the local scene, but I donno

3001434, Hell yeah, I mentioned this in the Top 5 MCs thread because I was hyped
Posted by natenate101, Sat Feb-10-18 10:31 PM
and I'm very pleased with this project. Fat Jack has always been dope, his production on Abstract Rude and Tribe Unique's early albums consistently set a mood. And thank goodness he hooked up with Ace One because this is the best the MC has sounded in some time. He has always been cool with One MC/One Producer collaborations but the results have been mixed. This is him in a nice zone, not too simple and not STYLIN too hard either. A very needed album. Good shit.

Highlights for me:
Bang bang
Hambone
This One
We've Arrived
Scott Joplin
And the best song on the album, The Cool. Perfection

Please support these 2 West Coast legends so they'll do more in the future.

I always loved FatJack's drum programming. It has *that* feel to it that isn't flashy, but it's not stiff either. It's a comfortable place between breaks and manual programming that always comes off smooth.
3001697, okay this is seriuosly dope, on my early top 2018 list
Posted by Garhart Poppwell, Sun Feb-18-18 04:17 PM
FatJack's production is really amazing on this album. It tows the line between vintage Hip Hop and a more contemporary West Coast underground sound.
3001706, I got the same exact feeling from it.

Well said. I thought the same thing. It's got elements of the boom bap style but still sounds fresh and modern.
