3001096, Favorite Isley Brothers Song
Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Fri Feb-02-18 10:30 AM
Isley Brothers are one of those groups that over time my favorite song by the group changes to reflect where I am in life.

Of course my favorite as a kid was "Between the Sheets" because of that song's relationship to hip-hop (Bonita Applebum remix).

But then I began to appreciate Who's that Lady wants I could understand all the different things going on in that song.

Lately though, my joint has been "Harvest for the World". I just dig the optimism of that song.

Anyway, what's your favorite?

I love the original. I almost consider it a completely different song honestly.

To me, Ron and the brothers put something into that song that wasn't 100% there at first.

Of course, you know I heard the Isley version first and didn't hear Todd's until multiple years later. But by then I understood the whole 'Givin it back' vibe the Isleys, Ike Hayes, and others were getting into. Don't start me on the Isley version of basically any James Taylor-related song..they went to town on all of em.

But really, probably attributed to my age, I love the shit that was sampled or covered, like Footsteps, Choosy Lover, At Your Best, Summer Breeze, etc.

Too many. Listening to their albums in full paid me back so well. It gave me a respect for them that I’ll never lose.

You’re the key to my heart/you’re beside me might be the most definitive thing they did during that 70s era to me. Winner takes all is a jamming ass double album in general. And like most acts from that era, it’s not unreasonable to claim that they never fully recovered from it. Or I could at least say that it took them a few albums to recover.

But I fucking love the Isley brothers. From 3+3 through Between the Sheets, I have love for something on every album if not the whole damn album.

Here we go again is another one too. I still wonder if that song vs Gap Band’s Yearning for your love is the base of the alleged beef between Ron Isley and Charlie Wilson.

i mean not many musical acts can say they hit from the 50,60's,70's,80's,90's and 00's,

there covers were the truth Summer breeze

they covered all the bases and as far as bands go only Earth, wind and fire has them slightly beat.
3001343, I mean I can go back to the albums before 3+3 era

I don't think anyone has had a run like The Isleys/Ron Isley. I loved the album they did last year with Santana.

"Every chance I get...from the first time we met. I wanna groove. With. You (pimpin guitar in the background)". So great.

It is perfect. It's one of those songs that they almost didn't know how to get out of so they just kept it rolling. And that last half or so is EASILY my favorite part of the song. Ron is just riding it out and being all of the greats things that he was on a record during that era. Songs like that make me have a hard time selecting any Isley album over Showdown. It's a jamathon. And Coolin Me Out on the other side ain't nothing to sneeze at either.

RIGHT? Everything about that cut is just smoothness.

Good point! I never even looked at it that way.

Ron is criminally underrated.

Don't clown me... but I've never heard the entire album. I'ma remedy that tonight.

Oh, I believe you are a rainbow
All the heaven I need to see
You're the promise everlasting
Where you are, I hope to be
Make me say it again girl
Make me say it again girl
Make me say it again girl
You're all I need, oh yes you are
You're all I need, oh yes you are
You're all I need
Whatever pains inside, you make it better
You seem to realize, when I'm concerned
You are the only one who goes through the changes
Giving my life directions, when I am turned
Make me say it again girl
Make me say it again girl
Make me say it again girl
You're all I need, oh yes you are
You're all I need, oh yes you are
You're all I need
How am I worthy of love from an angel
Princess Imperial of my soul
Don't really matter if you choose not to answer
Hoping what I reveal you already know
Make me say it again girl
Make me say it again girl
Make me say it again girl
You're all I need, oh yes you are
You're all I need, oh yes you are
You're all I need

and keep it so smooth. they just beat you in so many decades. them and Michael Jackson got that multi multi multi decade thing going in a real way.
