2999895, I'm don't get hyped for movies in general now
Posted by obsidianchrysalis, Thu Jan-04-18 08:19 PM
Even less so for blockbusters, but my interest is legit piqued for Black Panther.

The song was just okay. Maybe something that plays over the credits as folks are waiting for the easter egg at the end of the credits.

I have no idea how this project will turn out. There have been some good examples of pop / hip-hop folks getting into music producing for movies turning out well. Trent Reznor for the Fincher movies. I believe ?uest worked on Selma and Detroit. Pharell did well with his chance on Dispicable Me 2.

But there are subtleties that might be mishandled in this realm that Kendrick would have an instictive knowledge to resolve well as a solo artist.

I hope it turns out well. It would be a good look for Kendrick and Top Dawg.
2999898, Can we got 1 black hippy track on this please?
Posted by phemom, Thu Jan-04-18 08:51 PM
Don't really care about the movie tie-in, I doubt what's done here will have much effect on the film....just a money grab soundtrack. Which doesn't happen as often anymore, so I'm not mad at it.

Back to the music, I'm hoping for some

Thundercat/FlyLo involvement.

Ab-Soul verses that doesn't sound extra drugged out

A Kendrick x Cole record or Kendrick & Q (it's been awhile since they have been on a song together).

Rapsody.
2999913, this is great news
Posted by spitfire, Fri Jan-05-18 03:45 AM
hopefully this can be a shaft or superfly OST for this age and time.

however. this song is bland as fuck. i expect A LOT MORE when these two come together
2999914, typical soundtrack corn. musically i'm not expecting much out
Posted by Hellyeah, Fri Jan-05-18 06:42 AM
of this album
2999915, this movie needs an African jazz/high life/afro beat soundtrack
Posted by Garhart Poppwell, Fri Jan-05-18 06:53 AM
instead of something like this.
2999958, lol, it's still a disney movie after all.
Posted by Hellyeah, Fri Jan-05-18 06:13 PM
still if they wanted some bland safe shit to play after the credits they should've called big sean...kendrick is wasted doing stuff like this
2999976, If this was/turns out to be a score instead of a soundtrack
Posted by shutupneff, Sat Jan-06-18 09:16 PM
i.e. at least 80% instrsumental, I would be super excited about this. Sounwave, Thundercat and them getting together to make something under Kendrick's direction (with 2-5 more traditional hip hop cuts like the single we've already got) would almost certainly be amazing. Or even if it was mostly stuff like the Vince Staples/Gil-Scott Heron mashup from the trailer I'd be down as fuck.

I doubt that's what we'll get though. It'll be a good enough mixtape-style album with a couple serious bangers and a bit of fluff.

As long as Sia doesn't sing over the end credits...

Posted by JFrost1117, Wed Jan-31-18 07:38 PM
Lol, I remember spending $20 in Blockbuster Music for soundtracks with one Goodie Mob or OutKast song on 'em.
3001039, Future is garbage on "King's Dead" tho

Jay Rock and Kendrick came correct tho.
3001108, Jay Rock is a damn beast

@rob_starrk
3001045, Looking forward to most of this.
Posted by phemom, Thu Feb-01-18 12:12 AM
- Hopefully Ab-Soul doesn't sound too drugged out to be coherent this time. He's been off the grid for awhile...he should have something to say.

- Need that Schoolboy & 2 Chainz record ASAP.

- Just listened to SOB X RBE on soundcloud....and uh, it's not for me...but it's cool that some young guys get a shot on a soundtrack this big.

- Wonder why there's no Isiah Rashad on this?
3001060, It was reported he’d be on there.

3001066, something must be up w/ him cause he aint on the tour either.
Posted by BrooklynWHAT, Thu Feb-01-18 04:11 PM
3001071, He’s had issues with alcoholism in the past.
Posted by JFrost1117, Thu Feb-01-18 05:19 PM
Maybe he’s on the bench until he’s closer to 100%.

I just heard him on a radio drop when I was in Chattanooga last weekend. I pray he gets his shit together and not squander this shot, because I don’t see Chattanooga bursting at the seams with rappers.
3001057, Damn...Chuck D couldnt get a hook or nothing?

3001073, For this to be such a big film for Black people to select one artist
Posted by Musa, Thu Feb-01-18 06:33 PM
to do the soundtrack is wack.

I'm not hype for this at all.

Too many dope HELLA BLACK and different artist that could have added to this project.

Call me a snob I ain't thinking about Travis Scott or Hebrew Israelites(well maybe their get up) when I read Black Panther.

Shafiq Husayn

Kaytranada

Those two young girls Beyonce signed

Ibeyi

Flying Lotus

etc etc etc and the first few are just name dropping not even mentioning the super dope underground yet known artist.

3001075, it's a Marvel movie bud
Posted by Tiger Woods, Thu Feb-01-18 11:10 PM
3001077, And they pulling out all the stops for damn near everything
Posted by Musa, Thu Feb-01-18 11:23 PM
but the music?!?!?!?!
3001288, It's not like he Whitney "Bodyguarded" it though.

3001088, Third single. Pray For Me.

3001092, whew this hot.

3001101, underwelming
Posted by stone_phalanges, Fri Feb-02-18 01:20 PM
Huh, I guess it's going to be one of "those" albums. Wish it was just Kendrick on this.
3001117, Another miss
Posted by Hitokiri, Fri Feb-02-18 03:42 PM
All The Star and this track are both pretty wack.
King's Dead is okay, I guess.

Expectations dropping fast.
3001135, These songs sound 'muted' but in a good way
Posted by obsidianchrysalis, Fri Feb-02-18 11:26 PM
If we think back on great song placement in movies, very few of them intercut into the narrative themselves are bangers or great, anthemic songs.

As a collection songs these aren't awe-inspiring but I'm sure they'll have different meaning and impact based upon the context of the movie.

Based on bwood's post about the song that is intercut into the movie, some of these songs are there to establish a mood and not take away from the viewing experience.

If that's the case, the soundtrack will have to be judged as a soundtrack to the movie and not a soundtrack in the '90s movie sense, ie, an album that works better as a standalone project than as a means to support a movie narrative.
3001273, Video for "All the Stars"
Posted by bwood, Tue Feb-06-18 01:35 PM
African diaspora on display.

3001281, has drake ever made any great or thought provoking videos?
Posted by Reeq, Tue Feb-06-18 06:21 PM
not to drum up the whole drake vs kendrick thing (even tho i just did lol) but thats one thing that stands out to me.

kendrick is really killing it in this area. even his songs i dont really like that much are completely redeemed by the creativity of the videos.

i cant think of a memorable drake video...except for maybe hotline bling but that is because of the dancing.
3001284, He's too much of a lame to drop something...
Posted by bwood, Tue Feb-06-18 07:07 PM
...like that.
3001372, no argument here.
Posted by Reeq, Thu Feb-08-18 08:51 PM
3001409, Remember when "Over" was the hottest song out? Me neither, but
Posted by -DJ R-Tistic-, Fri Feb-09-18 06:28 PM
remember the video dropped and folks were just highly underwhelmed by it.
3001295, That video is great
Posted by Anonymous, Tue Feb-06-18 11:27 PM
3001287, these are probably TDE songs that were just laying around
Posted by Tiger Woods, Tue Feb-06-18 08:28 PM
for having established a standard of excellence, this is quite underwhelming coming from those guys
3001379, solid album
Posted by BrooklynWHAT, Fri Feb-09-18 01:15 AM
3001392, This shit slaps so hard.
Posted by bwood, Fri Feb-09-18 01:17 PM
Outside of one or two songs, I'm gonna be fucking with this hard. Can't wait to play "Opps" at ignorant levels.

I didn't know that I needed James Blake crooning over Afrobeat poly-rhythms.

"King's Dead" works so well in the overall album minus Future.

Gotta give it a third listen all the way through in the whip.
3001443, Solid comp that ain't got ish to do with the film
Posted by Nick Has a Problem...Seriously, Sun Feb-11-18 02:53 PM
I ain't mad at more TDE music though. Kendrick and Sounwave put a dope project together.
3001449, This is my hangup with the album....
Posted by rorschach, Sun Feb-11-18 07:41 PM
There's some decent music on the album but I can't help but think this is a missed opportunity to craft a truly great soundtrack, especially considering the subject matter.

Imagine what this album could've been if someone like Questlove curated this album.

---------------------------------------
3001494, Or if it wasnt full of...well...DnB (drugs and bitches)
Posted by tully_blanchard, Mon Feb-12-18 05:17 PM
Its a bomb album, but I wish other than a "Black Panther" being said here and there, it actually related to the movie in some way

Bottoms up....and the devil laughs..

http://soundcloud.com/rayandersonjr
3001640, Not many people in his generation capable of much more
Posted by spirit, Thu Feb-15-18 09:57 PM
Who are popular, anyway. You sure as hell don’t wanna hear amigos presents Black Panther lol

Would be cooler if Kendrick played the Yeezy role and assembled an all star team of political rappers, past and present, but it was a sonically cohesive piece, at least. Also top notch double entendres from Soul in the first verse of his song

Peace,

Spirit (Alan)
