Justin Timberlake Announces New Album 'Man of the Woods'
Singer sets February album release days before Super Bowl performance

Justin Timberlake revealed his new album 'Man of the Woods' will be out next month days before his Super Bowl performance
By Elias Leight

Justin Timberlake plans to release a new album, Man of the Woods, on February 2nd. The singer announced the news on Tuesday with a short teaser detailing his thought process behind the album.

The trailer portrays Timberlake as a rugged everyman: He struts through cornfields and snowy vistas and sits alone at night by a roaring fire. "This album is really inspired by my son, my wife, my family, but more so than any other album I've ever written, where I'm from – it's personal," he says in a voiceover. Very brief snippets of new music play throughout the clip. Pharrell Williams, a longtime Timberlake collaborator, gets the final word in the trailer, describing a new Man of the Woods song as "a smash."

Timberlake's album announcement is well-timed, as the singer is set to perform at the Super Bowl halftime show two days later on February 4th. The singer will release the first single from Man of the Woods on Friday.

Timberlake's last full-length, The 20/20 Experience, was a wildly ambitious double album released in two parts during 2013. Last year, Timberlake worked heavily on the soundtrack to the movie Trolls. His single, "Can't Stop the Feeling," reached Number One on the Hot 100 last year.
2999762, Wonder how involved Timbaland is with this one
Posted by Stringer Bell, Tue Jan-02-18 11:31 AM
Hopefully there's a few decent cuts, I still enjoy a few tracks from 20-20 (Tunnel Vision, Blue Ocean Floor, Suit and Tie, Dress On until Timbaland ruins it with his raps).
2999767, I hear Pharell talking in the video

2999812, Very, from the pics I've seen.

2999817, The first 20/20 was a great album.
Posted by BSharp, Wed Jan-03-18 02:01 AM
And "Dress On" should've been on there.
2999768, so we're getting a Justin Timberlake as Bon Iver album? Hm.
Posted by Tiger Woods, Tue Jan-02-18 12:25 PM
2999932, he actually did well as a folky in Llewyn Davis
Posted by lonesome_d, Fri Jan-05-18 12:54 PM
2999974, he really did!
Posted by thebigfunk, Sat Jan-06-18 12:52 PM
I recently watched that again for the first time since it came out - so good!

~ i could still snort you under the table ~
3000019, doesn't sound like that's what we're getting though
Posted by lonesome_d, Mon Jan-08-18 10:57 AM
if it were, I would have been very interested to watch the ensuing mayhem.

(I still haven't watched the whole movie, but went through the whole soundtrack and most of the music clips recently. pretty good overall.)
2999773, Bon Iver/Bubba Sparxxx 'Deliverance'?

2999774, I did not read the previous reply before posting.

2999790, deliverance was such an underrated album.
Posted by Reeq, Tue Jan-02-18 03:56 PM
one of my white homies at the gym turned me on to it like years after the fact.
2999814, Deliverance is dope.

2999918, Not only is the song and video absolutely terrible...
Posted by Anonymous, Fri Jan-05-18 09:40 AM
It is also the complete opposite of what the trailer made me think the album was going to sound like.
2999920, No idea what to expect as...
Posted by bwood, Fri Jan-05-18 11:09 AM
...apparently, country star Chris Stapleton is on the album.
2999948, I'm ambivalent towards the song (didn't see the video)
Posted by Marbles, Fri Jan-05-18 03:40 PM
>It is also the complete opposite of what the trailer made me
>think the album was going to sound like.

But I agree with you 100% here. The song sounds like a typical pop offering. I got the impression that he was going rogue with this one.
2999949, Came to post this too
Posted by xangeluvr, Fri Jan-05-18 03:56 PM
Except I don't mind the song, but yeah I expected something much different after reading the article about the album and watching the trailer.

>It is also the complete opposite of what the trailer made me
>think the album was going to sound like.
2999921, same reaction as when i first heard SexyBack: fuckn love it.
Posted by araQual, Fri Jan-05-18 11:16 AM
Tim & Danja brought some electrofied heat on this. not minding a slightly askew Timberlake either. i seem to recall SexyBack getting a divisive response too, until a month or two later when everyone and their uncle were gettin down to it. i predict same shit will happen with this.

V.
2999959, I hated SexyBack (still do) and hate this
Posted by DJR, Fri Jan-05-18 06:47 PM
I did like the majority of the album that SexyBack was on though, so
hopefully that will be the case here too.
2999985, sexyback grew on me. this has too.
Posted by Reeq, Sun Jan-07-18 05:31 PM
the loud ass electro whatever shit dominates the track and is kinda distracting. but when you focus in on the bassline...its hard not to catch that groove.
2999964, LOL. These niggas using Skrillex drops when he's even moved on
Posted by BigReg, Fri Jan-05-18 10:03 PM
That said, its not horrible because it's pretty much what he was doing on Justified
2999983, filthy is a wack George Michael reject track
Posted by mistermaxxx08, Sun Jan-07-18 05:02 PM
timberfluff putting out more wackness. he peaked and primed in 06 and even then that was watered down.

he is a liteweight with middleweight aspirations.

One of the Most Overrated White Acts that I have ever seen or heard.

if timberlake wanted to have a cool white thing and not be wack with it he should call up Richard Marx and Don Henley to show him how to do it middle of the road right with some cool
3000039, shrug, I really like this song
Posted by Tiger Woods, Mon Jan-08-18 03:17 PM

2999946, The Neptunes are all over this..
Posted by LeroyBumpkin, Fri Jan-05-18 03:20 PM
...so does that mean they're cool with Jive Records?

Cause I thought he was mad at them for not letting The Clipse out of their contract, and that's why he didn't want to work on any more JT projects.

2999957, Yeah man, them crackers wasn’t playing fair
Posted by Anonymous, Fri Jan-05-18 06:11 PM
2999971, Excellent.

2999970, If The Neptunes are on board for real, I'm excited
Posted by Firecracker, Sat Jan-06-18 06:35 AM

Timbo is more miss than hit these days, and has been for a while. *MAYBE* Danja can bring back some old heat but judging by Filthy, idk

But I'll take Chad Hugo back in the studio almost over anyone, if he / they are in for real I'm down
3000064, RE: The Neptunes are all over this..
Posted by double 0, Tue Jan-09-18 03:32 AM
There is NO Jive records...

There is RCA which is what JT is dropping on
3000097, after 20/20 part 2 he should've never worked with timbaland
Posted by Hellyeah, Tue Jan-09-18 03:45 PM
ever again...this single is embarrassingly bad

hopefully the neptunes tracks will save the day
3000420, 2nd single. Supplies.

sad

wasted a dope Neptunes production
3000519, I’m surprised how bad this is. Like a sketch he’d do on SNL
Posted by Tiger Woods, Fri Jan-19-18 07:53 AM
3000520, Its weird. It seems the last records spooked him into completency
Posted by BigReg, Fri Jan-19-18 08:10 AM
His thing was avant garde pop; while in hindsight its not a reach to holla at huge rap producers for pop tracks, him tapping neps and timbo for whole albums (when before at most a white star might hit em up for a first single or remix for a bit of flavor) was a big deal.

Suit and Tie era was a flop in comparison; but even in its failure it tried for something different...the avg length of those pop songs was 7 minutes long(!!!) and clearly he was trying to aim for higher musical aspirations even tho he missed.

These two new records aint bad, but they sound like ‘pretty good’ inoffensive pop r&b records for a dude known to push the medium. In an era where Bruno Mars and even Calvin Harris are bringing the crossover hits (and flipping the script while doing it) him jusr kinda wading water was a bad decision.

I like these two songs, but they pedestrian as hell
3000527, i honestly think he just wanted to hurry up and put some music out
Posted by Reeq, Fri Jan-19-18 10:34 AM
so he can tour again.

which is basically the formula for like 90% of the mainstream industry now. plan the tour. make the music to match.

It didn't knock my socks off but it was straight. Miles ahead of the first 2 singles.
3000824, This is what I was expecting

When the album was announced this is what I expected from the description. Good song, cool video.

Posted by Reeq, Wed Jan-31-18 01:36 PM
a lot of bubble gum pharrell tv commerical production on this.

3001041, RE: it leaked.
Posted by double 0, Wed Jan-31-18 09:05 PM
There are some good songs on this but altogether uninspiring...

Music needs a new timbo and/or neptunes...

Something that upends our ideas of rhythm and sound... something altogether left field with a clear understanding of pop
3001042, what did you think about the 1st 20/20?
Posted by Reeq, Wed Jan-31-18 09:11 PM
i wouldnt mind more of that jt with timbo/jroc/fauntleroy.

pharrell/neptunes are the weak link to me.
3001044, RE: what did you think about the 1st 20/20?
Posted by double 0, Wed Jan-31-18 11:10 PM
It was incredibly dope imo...

I still go back to it now.... I just think the whole thing needs to be shaken up..

Everyobe is too comfortable
3001079, That 1st 20/20 was incredible
Posted by BSharp, Fri Feb-02-18 12:45 AM
LOVED that album
3001046, Based on the first few listens, this album is a dud...
Posted by ramaj1, Thu Feb-01-18 01:45 AM
That rustic trailer turned out to be a bit of a bait and switch. MOTW is very much a typical Justin Timberlake release. The fusion of his usual pop/R&B slickness with contrived "Southern" accents--a little bit of fiddle, a smidgen of slide guitar, etc.--is as corny as almost all of the lyrics.

JT has never been "great" on any level despite what the critics have said but his music was always expertly produced...now, it's not even that.

"Midnight Summer Jam" is nice tho. *shrugs*
3001078, wow tough room ... I really dig it, but I guess that's my Memphis bias

3001089, *Yawns* Generic
Posted by bwood, Fri Feb-02-18 09:36 AM
He made a generic pop album with flashes of Americana. Nothing I want to hear again.

I do want an instrumental for "Supplies" tho.
3001090, Pitchfork gives it a 3.8
Posted by Hitokiri, Fri Feb-02-18 10:07 AM
lmao

and slaughters him in the review

Posted by beatnik, Sat Feb-03-18 03:58 PM
I'm probably not going to check out the album but that review, man, sound like they mad at him

then listing off all his lame moments as if they want to see dude fail, but those singles are terrible, that review is something else though

"quit right now" lol
3001091, absolute basura. i'll stick w/ his first 4 albums.

Yeah the first was very good. I always thought the second was just scraps from the first and that was why the drop in quality.
3001179, yeah i thought everyone recognized this.
Posted by Reeq, Sun Feb-04-18 01:07 PM
>I always thought the second was

they were all recorded in the same sessions span. part 2 was basically a money grab with songs from the cutting room floor.
