2995184, Was '777-9311' preprogrammed on the LM-1? Posted by SoWhat, Thu Sep-07-17 10:39 AM
Jesse Johnson said it was. He said Tower of Power's drummer made that pattern and it came preprogrammed on Prince's LM-1.
But Jesse used to hate on Prince so I take that with a grain of salt.

2995223, I Thought Someone Said Morris Day Did It? Posted by Dj Joey Joe, Fri Sep-08-17 12:24 PM
Not sure if it was 15 or someone else who said it was drums triggered into the LN-1.

2995224, questlove supreme episode with jimmy jam Posted by Bblock, Fri Sep-08-17 12:54 PM
forget which part said it was a drum machine pattern don't know who preprogrammed it, he didn't say

2995227, it wasn't Morris - that's a LM-1. not live drums. Posted by SoWhat, Fri Sep-08-17 02:31 PM
and Jesse has been quoted saying the HI-HAT pattern was pre-programmed in the LM-1.
but the drums on the record are a machine. and Prince was the one playing/programming the machine, not Morris.

2995267, Yeah. In addition to Jesse I remember a John Blackwell interview Posted by soulfunk, Sun Sep-10-17 12:18 PM
in which he said David Garibaldi from Tower of Power programmed it in the LM-1. What I don't know is if it was a stock preset, or if he happened to program it on one specific LM-1 and Prince got ahold of it at some point later and jacked it. Because it it was preprogrammed stock, this would be a much more known fact sincere anyone with a stock LM-1 would have that drum pattern.
Prince killed the bass guitar part on that song though...

Thanks.

2995269, I thought Prince played it, then sped it up. Posted by LeroyBumpkin, Sun Sep-10-17 01:55 PM
I could have sworn this was talked about on QLS with the Revolution.

2995286, im sure that's how he teaches it. Posted by SoWhat, Mon Sep-11-17 08:13 AM
He probably taught Bobby Z that way. Most instruction vids I have seen are like that.

2995270, OKP did a story on the song several months ago Posted by c71, Sun Sep-10-17 04:14 PM
it pays to check the main page regularly for such stories, yes.
Here's what the author, Elijah C. Watson, wrote:
"The track showed Prince’s prowess as a producer, with the song featuring some of his best work across various instruments (most notably the bass), and although the track’s unprecedented drum part was not programmed by Prince (the beat was originally programmed into a Linn LM-1 drum machine by David Garibaldi for Roger Linn, although it is unknown how Prince became owner of the instrument), he still formatted the part to where it fit in the song, creating a drum part that drummers still have a hard time replicating almost 35 years later."

2995285, Thanks. Posted by SoWhat, Mon Sep-11-17 08:11 AM
I fell down a YouTube hole looking at instruction/re-creation videos for some of my favorite Prince drum patterns and came across a comment where Jesse was quoted as above. This didn't come up. Thanks for pointing me to it.
Btw - Prince's best song is Power Fantastic. Lol

2995294, so Garibaldi didn't exactly program it Posted by SoWhat, Mon Sep-11-17 12:11 PM
he just recorded the drum sounds into the machine that Prince used to make the pattern?
