2994513, Spin-off: My Top 50 R&B songs. 3 categories, based on my DJ Crowd reaction
Posted by -DJ R-Tistic-, Thu Aug-17-17 03:12 PM
I was gonna post it in the Top 30 R&B songs list, but decided to make it another post.

So....this is PURELY based off of crowd reaction when I DJ, not going off of my favorites or anything on that side.

My crowds are mainly 30-40, mainly in L.A. and Florida...so there's a slight Regional bias with it. But just from a random quick brainstorm, this is what I came up with...I'm sure I'm missing a few, but yeah.

Slow jams:
1. Bump and grind
2. Weak
3. I'm going down
4. Pretty brown eyes
5. Freak me (Silk)
6. Freekin you
7. Knockin da boots
8. Anytime, anyplace
9. Stay (Jodeci)
10. Who can I run to
11. Nice & Slow
12. All I do is think of you (Troop)
13. Pillow (TTT)

Mid tempo jams:
1. Touch me, tease me
2. I wanna be down
3. Come & talk to me (remix)
4. I can love you better
5. Killing me softly
6. Right here (remix)
7. Tell me (Groove theory)
8. Lady (D'Angelo)
9. Sweet thing (Mary J)
10. Best friend (Brandy)
11. You make me wanna
12. Just kickin it
13. I'm so into you (Tamia)
14. Don't take it personal (Monica)
15. Sittin up in my room
16. Baby baby baby (TLC)
17. Are you that somebody

Upbeat/party jams:

1. Poison
2. This is how we do it
3. Candy rain
4. My boo (Ghost Town DJs)
5. Pony (It's kind of a slow jam but kind of a party jam)
6. MotownPhilly
7. Fantasy
8. Remember the time
9. I wanna sex you up
10. Kissing game (Hi-Five)
10. Return of the mack
11. Back & forth
12. No Diggity
13. Don't walk away
14. Every little thing I do (Soul 4 Real)
15. Too close
16. Freak like me (Adina)
17. Only you (Remix)
18. Real love
19. I'm so into you (SWV)
20. Hey Mr. DJ

yes

this list does seem to point to a lot of what I would expect.
2994520, Never really thought Don't Take It Personal is a party record.
Posted by phemom, Thu Aug-17-17 06:48 PM
A mid-tempo song about periods is kinda odd to still be getting spun over 20 years later. After checking wikipedia the single sold 1.2 million copies, so I'm dead wrong lol

I would figure "Like This & Like That" would be a better song to play...even with the worst 16 I've ever heard on a professional song on it.
2994521, It's not necessarily a party-party record, but it works for nostalgia
Posted by -DJ R-Tistic-, Thu Aug-17-17 06:54 PM

And my girl STILL swears that song ain't about her being on her period, LMAO.

"Like this and like that" just isn't as known, but it's def a better party record to me.
2994522, Do you play any Bobby Brown?
Posted by obsidianchrysalis, Thu Aug-17-17 07:08 PM
Like Every Little Step or Roni? Also, does What About My Friends or Ain't Too Proud to Beg?

The fact that Aalyiah isn't on the list is interesting as well. I wouldn't have thought that Brandy would have two songs in your list and Aalyiah zero.
2994523, I def play Bobby and New Edition, especially post movie. That's 80's tho
Posted by -DJ R-Tistic-, Thu Aug-17-17 07:24 PM
"Humpin around" doesn't get the same reaction as Every little step or any of those tracks...even On my own still goes hard.

What about your friends/Ain't too proud to beg, ehh they work with select crowds, but not as much with folks under 35 from what I see. They prefer Waterfalls and No scrubs by far...those coulda made the list toward the bottom of it.

Aaliyah has two songs on my list LOL...Back n Forth and Are you that somebody. But Brandy's songs overall may go harder, ESPECIALLY being that I'm in L.A.
2994618, SHIT I forgot Total "Can't you see." I would probably call it a mid-tempo
Posted by -DJ R-Tistic-, Mon Aug-21-17 02:33 PM
and it would be #2 for sure. I would also switch "I wanna be down" with "Come and talk to me"

good lists, thx for sharing.

what kind of medium do you spin?

are you aware of any place to pick up 320 or losless files?

i've found several tracks in 320/wav on juno but the quality seems sketch.

2994631, It's mainly 320. My DJ Pools really only have 320, but I still use Soulseek
Posted by -DJ R-Tistic-, Tue Aug-22-17 11:16 AM
Only thing with Soulseek is a LOT of files are corrupted. It tells you they are, but if you ignore it, you'll be in major trouble when you play it.
2994665, Not bad, but some glaring omissions to me.

Love that you put Weak that high. That's my fav/most nostalgic slow jam of the 90s. But, I think there are at least a few gems missing:

Lauryn Hill - X-Factor
Dru Hill - 5 Steps or We're Not Making Love No More
Mista - Blackberry Molasses
Donnell Jones - Where I Wanna Be
Prince - The Most Beautiful Girl in the World
Erykah Badu - Otherside of the Game
Shai - If I Ever Fall in Love
Brandy - Have You Ever?

And it's kind of tough to keep off Whitney - I Will Always Love You

Good selections, but I'd find a way to work in:

Mariah & Bone Thugs - Breakdown
Donnell Jones - This Luv
Aaliyah - If your girl only knew

Kind of blasphemy to not include Johnny Gill - Rub You the Right Way
Also, I can vividly remember Doo Wop (That Thing) killing in the clubs and at school dances

I'm not their biggest fan, but I feel like Salt n Peppa have to be on here with either Shoop or Whatta Man.

Also might consider:

112 - Anywhere
Destiny's Child - Say My Name
Robin S - Show Me Love

2994672, Overall....I def get it, but it's not even a biased list, or anything based
Posted by -DJ R-Tistic-, Thu Aug-24-17 11:30 AM
on what I personally feel or whatev. It's solely based off of when I DJ, and when I go out to parties with other DJs. So if anything, it's biased based on L.A., majority Black crowds, and the 25-40 age range. Some of those songs you mentioned aren't at all club songs, and I've never heard them in a club or at a party before. Some are karaoke songs for sure, which could almost be another category.

Of these...the ones that would get great reaction at a party are probably just X-Factor and If I ever fall in love....I've seen folks go nuts to those before, but they only work in certain settings and with certain crowds.

I've never in life heard that at a party...but for karaoke, for sure.

I may have heard Breakdown at a party before, but I wouldn't place it higher than anything here. "If your girl only knew" tends to be hit and miss for me...it works whenever it's a R&B party, or anything that's dedicated to Aaliyah, but doesn't get that automatic reaction like some of the higher listed tracks. I may even place "Are you that somebody" higher on this list, though.

For the under 35 crowd, "Rub you the right way" def isn't on that list. I can see it going hard for the 40-50 for sure, and especially back in the day...but it's so many other songs from that era that go harder.

I count Salt n Pepa as Rap...someone else mentioned "Crush on you" which I def consider as Rap. Same for "Shorty swing my way" which is kinda half and half.

>Also might consider:

112 "Anywhere" def goes off with folks my age, early 30's and late 20's, nostalgia alone. Def has to be a sexual type mood for it to go off, but it works as good as some of the lower ranked slow songs I have.

"Say my name" works, but to me, it's really just the intro of it that goes. I wouldn't put it above anything on the list, though.

"Show me love" is House to me, and doesn't work with a straight Rap/R&B L.A. crowd under 35. It works for the 35-45 transplants from the East more than anything.
2994674, off topic but I just moved to south florida
Posted by SsenepoD, Thu Aug-24-17 01:24 PM
staying in Deerfield Beach (about 45 minutes north of miami).

i know you do a lotta stuff out in FL - any suggestions on people to follow online, bars/clubs, nights, events, etc.?

I'm looking for something a little more lowkey & all the hip hop "clubs" i see are doing a lot, & the "local hiphop" i'm finding are all 16year old suicidal zanheads.

usually when I'm in a new spot I search out the 2-3 folks on twitter/IG that are into the same stuff & kind of follow along with what they post, but here I haven't been able to find much.
2994732, Man, I haven't lived there since 08 and I was 8 hours away in Tally

But I can definitely check with my folks who still live down there. Last time I went to Miami/Lauderdale to party was 2007 Memorial Day. We hit some cool spots that weren't super "Hollywood" or "Beach side" or whatever you wanna call it. I def enjoyed the Hard Rock and the bars they had there.
