D'Angelo is releasing a remastered deluxe edition of his seminal neo-soul classic debut Brown Sugar on August 25th via Virgin/UMe. The reissue, prepped in 2-CD and digital formats, features 21 rare tracks, including previously issued remixes, instrumentals and a cappella versions.

Highlights from the expanded Brown Sugar include a cappella renditions of the title track and "Me and Those Dreamin' Eyes of Mine"; an alternate version of "Brown Sugar," an alternate mix of "Cruisin'"; and remixes from CJ Mackintosh, Dallas Austin, Tech King, Erick Sermon and Incognito.

The deluxe edition is housed in a digipak with a 20-page booklet boasting rare photographs, lyrics and author-filmmaker Nelson George's essay about the album's innovative, influential hybrid of gospel, soul, funk and hip-hop.

In the liner notes, Brown Sugar co-producer Bob Power says of D'Angelo, "(He) was one of those artists that came not just fully formed, but truly genre-bending; genre-creating is really more like it."

Brown Sugar was a modest commercial success upon its initial release, peaking at Number 22 on the Billboard 200 and spawning four singles: the title track, "Cruisin'," "Lady" and "Me and Those Dreamin' Eyes of Mine." Rolling Stone awarded the album four stars, with critic Cheo Coker writing, "Brown Sugar is a reminder of where R&B has been and, if the genre is to resurrect its creative relevance like a phoenix rising from the ashes, where it needs to go."

After a lengthy recording drought, D'Angelo returned in 2014 with his third LP, the acclaimed Black Messiah.

Posted by Garhart Poppwell, Sat Jul-15-17 08:51 PM
2993396, that's cool.....but....
Posted by Warren Coolidge, Sat Jul-15-17 11:17 PM
that's a lot of remixes....

he had a live album for Brown sugar...recorded some b-sides and other tracks....

a better reissue would have included that instead of a ton of remixes IMO...
2993505, this is how I feel.
Posted by LeroyBumpkin, Mon Jul-17-17 10:30 PM
I mean, I'll probably cop this, but I'm not all that impressed.
2993401, The Incognito remix is a nice touch...
Posted by Af-1, Sun Jul-16-17 03:11 PM
I very recently discovered that one.
2993426, 99% of these remixes have been out there and easy to get
Posted by araQual, Mon Jul-17-17 03:21 AM
only one i wasn't familiar with on that list was the Incognito mix, gonna have to track that one down. but surely some ACTUAL rarities would've been nice? b-sides especially?

V.
2993436, CD2, track1... the Brown Sugar remix
Posted by spitfire, Mon Jul-17-17 07:02 AM
shouldn't that be the beatminerz mix?
2993477, Nah.
Posted by HotThyng76, Mon Jul-17-17 01:01 PM
They gotta come harder than this. Plus I'm not itching for a BS rerelease. Voodoo? Yes.

And where is a new album???

2993487, He doesn't have ANY songs from this period that didn't make the album?
Posted by self_ish, Mon Jul-17-17 03:51 PM
I personally don't need a disc worth of remixes of songs that were singles. I am surprised the Ummah (Jay Dee) remix of Me And Those Dreaming Eyes isn't on here though. But I suppose that was "unofficial".
2993488, right?
Posted by HotThyng76, Mon Jul-17-17 04:52 PM
this ain't shit.

come w/something real. like you suggested - unreleased songs. songs that didn't make the album. not just a collection of remixes that were available on commercial and promotional singles. that's nothing.

but to me this isn't the most interesting period in D's career. i'm more interested in what's in the vault from the Voodoo era. and, of course, whatever's left over from Black Messiah.

2993506, And we KNOW there's stuff from the Voodoo period.
Posted by LeroyBumpkin, Mon Jul-17-17 10:32 PM
We know they just "kept the tape running".
I mean, I can put together a special edition disc myself w/ the stuff ?uest released.

If they do the same with VooDoo (5 remixes of Left and Right), I'll be disappointed.
2993509, What outtakes do we know about?
Posted by cbk, Tue Jul-18-17 12:03 AM
According to Luther, there were songs called "Magical" and "Get on the Floor".

http://soulculture.com/features/interviews/dangelos-brother-luther-archer-recalls-writing-for-brown-sugar-lp-return-to-the-classics/

And there are the legendary 4 track demos. Did Bob Power say he had them on QLS?

The one we have heard is "I Found My Smile Again".

Yeah I woulda loved to hear all those.

But I'm not mad at all about a Russell Elavado-masters Brown Sugar album. That's the main draw for me here.

2993510, 3 legit songs and 20 remixes ain't no classic
Posted by mistermaxxx08, Tue Jul-18-17 12:22 AM

sauce to a whole new level for you. what Alternative Universe?

what has D'angelo ever do to rival the Musical catelog and depth of ARRUH?

D'angelo ain't on Usher's catelog or Joe's or Brian MCknight's. D'angelo talent was there, however his musical output and depth is step below Ne Yo and falling.
