2993173, Asia has been in a zone since '13. Great to see him reach his potential
Posted by mrhood75, Mon Jul-10-17 01:34 PM
I'll definitely be copping this.
2993182, i'm sure it'll be solid
Posted by SsenepoD, Mon Jul-10-17 04:33 PM
but unfortunately for whatever reason, PA's one of those artists where I know he's good...i like his music...but I never really get around to keeping up w/his music.

also, whatever happened to Planet Rock w/him & Pete?
2993222, Apollo remixed the Gensu/PA album a few years ago too...

That's not true because I'm pretty sure I saw a pre-order page on the Mello Music Group website for a clear vinyl version of the album.

**edit**

If you click in the link above, you can pre-order vinyl and CD versions of the album.

Worth The Wait. Serious heat on here.
2994690, Off first listen last night I'm crazy disappointed
Posted by Ishwip, Fri Aug-25-17 11:37 AM
Leading up to the release yesterday I noticed with the singles they were trickling out the beats were missing Apollo's typically big, heavy drums. And sure enough, whole album is pretty much no snares, no big kicks.

The soul is there, the static, the grime, PA flowin', but the whole album to me off first listen was like a giant beat cock tease. Each track would start, beautiful soul samples cracklin', I'm expecting the drums to drop, then nope....almost like rapping over dope Pete Rock interlude "treats" for an entire album which I admit I've thought in the past would be nice, but over 15 tracks maybe not so much haha.

When the album finished I immediately put on last year's Skyzoo collabo as a musical palette cleanser. That album or his collabos with O.C., Guilty Simpson, Ras Kass, etc. was what I was hoping for with Planet Asia: big, boom bap drums, soul chops, screw your face up, nod hard beats with PA spittin' like he's better than everyone.

I appreciate not wanting to be boxed in to a certain sound and I'm not saying this album sucks. It's good, just not as DOMINANTLY great as I was sure it was going to be when they first announced the album was on the way.

the instrumentals are complete. they're not snippets or half-formed ideas. the loops are created in a way that it's clear where the measure starts and ends. the chops are clean and precise. PA is so in the pocket that his raps serve in an additional capacity as a hi hat or snare roll. very little actual percussion is needed. traditional drums over these instrumentals would detract from subtlety and precision of the chops and raps

i love that there aren't ostentatious drums all over this record. that style is so washed. i have a hard time listening to 90s rap records recently because i've become accustomed to drums getting out of the way of rappers, rather than rappers having to work around overly obvious and obnoxious 90s snares
2994758, Has this been your view on Apollo Brown's beats prior to this album?

2994770, i'm not very familiar with apollo brown
Posted by bearfield, Sun Aug-27-17 08:02 PM
the two works of his i'm most familiar with are westside gunn's "mr. t" and his rhythm roulette appearance. i know he's a boom bap traditionalist and has made beats with big 90s drums for artists like skyzoo and ras kass
2994810, this album sounds..
Posted by Small Pro, Tue Aug-29-17 10:16 AM
...like a batch the beat for mr. t might have come from
2994724, maybe why they named it anchovies
Posted by justin_scott, Sat Aug-26-17 06:57 AM
acquired taste.
2994759, Definitely
Posted by Ishwip, Sun Aug-27-17 03:41 PM
Again, I don't dislike "no drum" beats. Apollo has done that before. I just wasn't expecting it for an entire album.

2994831, Yeah I don't hate it, but it needs some drums somewhere
Posted by sectachrome86, Tue Aug-29-17 04:35 PM
A few of the songs like this are cool. I actually like the beats. A whole album like this is boring though. Everything sounding like a 3 minute intro and shit. I don't like the drumless Roc stuff either.
2994697, First 6 tracks are CRAZY
Posted by Soulroe, Fri Aug-25-17 01:01 PM
Diamonds tho.

Apollo went even more minimal. Still winning.

PA is PA.

Off 1 listen, this clicks.

2994705, gonna have to check this out
Posted by Small Pro, Fri Aug-25-17 02:29 PM
planet asia has one of my favorite all-time rapper voices

hopefully i can get a record off with him one day *crosses fingers*
2994711, the bars are hard...the beats are ZZZzzzzzZZZZZZzzzZZZZ

2994746, Sounds like an Apollo project to me
Posted by xangeluvr, Sun Aug-27-17 02:06 AM
I can't listen to any project of his past 2-3 songs usually because I fall asleep.
2994715, I enjoyed it quite a bit. It's very much a Planet Asia album
Posted by mrhood75, Fri Aug-25-17 06:29 PM
I actually like the Apollo Brown adapted his style to match PA's rhyme style. Showed that he's ready to adapt when needed, always the hallmark of a dope producer.
2994723, *Thanks the Hip Hop Gods for this beautiful album*
Posted by Boogie Stimuli, Sat Aug-26-17 03:15 AM

2994750, they are a pretty good match
Posted by Small Pro, Sun Aug-27-17 11:46 AM
this shit fly as hell, cohesive set of joints. The beats are minimalistic, a few recognizable samples (i swear i was just trying to figure out how to flip the ghost shit from "duffles" yesterday night) but some suprises too...planet asia gets in the pocket on the first track & sits there the whole album, legendary.

3.75/5, may raise to a 4 with repeated listens
2994774, I listened, it bored me.
Posted by jp, Mon Aug-28-17 12:05 AM
And I like both artists.
2994777, what happened to the snares?
Posted by My_SP1200_Broken_Again, Mon Aug-28-17 09:12 AM
2994786, Roc Marciano happened to the snares

^^^^^^^^^^^

i actually think jay elec started it... but all these cats is definitely copying rock

jay was spitting over orchestral loops
2994837, this is a dope album, my only real criticism is that
Posted by Garhart Poppwell, Tue Aug-29-17 08:10 PM
some of the songs are too long. An album done in this style should have most of the songs no longer than about 3 minutes at most unless there's something to break the verses up. Doom is a master of this-he'll have a 5 min song sandwiched between a 2 min song, an interlude and a 90 second song. But honestly Asia is so good at rapping that I don't really mind hearing him keep going.
