Queensbridge Prodigy Mural Defaced with White Paint

Sky-high disrespect levels

Last week, in the wake of the tragic and sudden passing of Mobb Deep rapper and Queens native Prodigy, artists Jeff Henriquez and Eli Lazare—collectively known as Eli-Eos—painted a mural of the late rap legend across the street from the storied Queensbridge Houses project development. Overnight however, the mural was defaced with splashes and streaks of white paint, leaving area residents with quite the eyesore in place of the initial ode to their hometown hero.

The paint was likely thrown onto the mural during the wee hours of Saturday morning, as a Queensbridge Housing resident confirms to Mass Appeal that as of midnight it had been untouched. The mural was painted over a span of several days last week on the side of an Urban Upbound location where 13th St. meets 40th Ave, across the street from the housing projects. Though Prodigy isn’t originally from Queensbridge—he first lived in the nearby LeFrak City complex after moving to Queens from Long Island—his joining forces with the other half of Mobb Deep, Havoc, led to the late rapper spending an immense amount of time in and around the popular Queens residence. Along with fellow Queensbridge rep Nas, Mobb Deep was instrumental in making Queensbridge a near-mythical part of hip hop lore in the 1990’s and beyond.

Henriquez and Lazare have plans to hold a candlelight vigil in front of the mural—which depicts Prodigy bearing his “Mobb” and “Deep” forearm tattoos in his signature pose—on July 13 according to DNAInfo. The artists did not immediately return Mass Appeal’s request for comment.
