2991937, RIP Prodigy (swipe)
Posted by Garhart Poppwell, Tue Jun-20-17 01:05 PM

Prodigy of Mobb Deep has died at age 42. A publicist for the group confirmed to XXL that he was found unconscious this morning.

He apparently had some sort of health crisis two days ago, and hip-hop as a whole has known P struggled with sickle cell disease for most of his life.

For his entire career, Prodigy was a master wordsmith, handling the lyrical heft for Mobb Deep while Havoc paved the way as one of New York’s premier producers.

We send our condolences to P’s family, friends and colleagues.

This one hurts. Just as he was going through an artistic renaissance via Albert Einstein and now he's gone.

RIP to a legend and one of the most quotable lyricist's EVER.
2991940, "lyricist" being the key word
Posted by Garhart Poppwell, Tue Jun-20-17 01:17 PM
By the time he got to Murda Muzik it was clear the progression on the first 3 Mobb albums wasn't a fluke. He's in the same class as Redman, as far as being more gifted than his subject matter would reveal.

The Infamous - Hell On Earth - Murda Muzik was one hell of a classic run.

Without a doubt top 5 of the 90s

Nas/Wu/Mobb ran shit.

So much classic material from albums to guest spots to compilation joints.

I'll be honest that the recent passing of legendary musicians hasn't affected me as much as it has others, I loved them all but they didn't hit that perfect combination to me personally like he did of having made great music, having made great music at an age that I was able to really immerse myself in it, having been at their apex when I was at an age to appreciate it, being able to see their direct influence on other artists and the music, giving regional pride at a silly, unfortunate time when it felt necessary, being close enough in age to them where the music and lyrics provided a somewhat cathartic and vicarious experience and not just fantasy.

He wasn't my favorite MC, Mobb Deep wasn't my favorite group, I'm from New York City but not Queens, but he's from that era where I just felt so much, if not everything was straight heat and Mobb Deep was at the forefront of it all to me

I hate to sound selfish but it hurts to lose that emotional part and time of your life. My first reaction to this wasn't to play his music but to text my own brother and tell him I love him.

Dark blocks, with streets lamps shot the fuck out
Park benches is broke, a nigga stretched out
Jumped off the roof and fell to his death it's real
Hand Ball walls displayed with R-I-P murials
Those who sling, play the shadows by the building
Devils spring, keep em going while the snows blowing
Grams get dipped, 50's is moked, cookies is broke
And Spliced in large pieces for the fiends to smoke
The sun set looks beautiful over the projects
What a shame, its ain't the same where we stand at

and couldn't give less than a damn about anything else. I haven't enjoyed a Mobb album in full since Murda Muzik (or Mobb Muzik, as the clean version states) but I'll be damned if I'm not gonna give it up for Prodigy. As an emcee he put too much work in over almost 3o years, but these people don't care about shit like that unless public opinion tells them to.

I was never the biggest Mobb Deep fan but "infamous" is undeniable and while "hell on earth" was the last thing I wanted to hear muscially *and* lyrically upon release, if you remove it from the context and era it was created in, it's about as strong follow-up to an undeniable classic as it gets...

Really dug "Albert Einstein" too...

Either way, as a rapper, dude nailed a particular, era-specific vibe/aesthetic better than practically anyone not called Nas or Raekwon...

Queensbridge Prodigy Mural Defaced with White Paint

Sky-high disrespect levels

Last week, in the wake of the tragic and sudden passing of Mobb Deep rapper and Queens native Prodigy, artists Jeff Henriquez and Eli Lazare—collectively known as Eli-Eos—painted a mural of the late rap legend across the street from the storied Queensbridge Houses project development. Overnight however, the mural was defaced with splashes and streaks of white paint, leaving area residents with quite the eyesore in place of the initial ode to their hometown hero.

The paint was likely thrown onto the mural during the wee hours of Saturday morning, as a Queensbridge Housing resident confirms to Mass Appeal that as of midnight it had been untouched. The mural was painted over a span of several days last week on the side of an Urban Upbound location where 13th St. meets 40th Ave, across the street from the housing projects. Though Prodigy isn’t originally from Queensbridge—he first lived in the nearby LeFrak City complex after moving to Queens from Long Island—his joining forces with the other half of Mobb Deep, Havoc, led to the late rapper spending an immense amount of time in and around the popular Queens residence. Along with fellow Queensbridge rep Nas, Mobb Deep was instrumental in making Queensbridge a near-mythical part of hip hop lore in the 1990’s and beyond.

Henriquez and Lazare have plans to hold a candlelight vigil in front of the mural—which depicts Prodigy bearing his “Mobb” and “Deep” forearm tattoos in his signature pose—on July 13 according to DNAInfo. The artists did not immediately return Mass Appeal’s request for comment.
