I've only listened once and had similar reactions all the way through...

And yet by the end, I felt like I was on the edge of getting it and appreciating it.

Not sure that I can explain this right, but it very much felt like a studio musician's solo outing to me. Which sounds like a diss, but I don't mean it as a diss.

The songwriting (sans lyrics) very much felt like a throwback, mostly in a good way.

Dude's voice reminded me so much of a singer-songwriter named Vance Gilbert that I had to google to make sure it wasn't him...

But some pretty bad lyrics combined with the sense that most of the tunes never really hit the way they were supposed to --- left me less than satisfied. I do plan to go back for one or two more spins though... if only to figure out what it is that doesn't quite work...
