1. thank you guys for digging the show.

2. we got AWESOME news in the future that should make the participants in "the other" QLS thread super happy but we gonna have to wait for a bit.

3. suggest some folk/acts/people with a worthy story you'd like us to interview on the show.

thanks!

Fiona Apple

Andre 3000
DJ Shadow

2980296, regional tales
Posted by , Mon Dec-19-16 04:19 PM
not to dismiss the current format or derail what is currently working - but for the sake of offering an idea that I think would be more alternatively engaging

Was thinking regional focused themes would be interesting to cast a larger net in order to understand the music and history from specific areas.

Gamble and Huff would be a great example for Philadelphia or Jazzy Jeff and Cash Money from the hip-hop perspective from Philadelphia.

At least maybe if could be a once in while thing.

werd.

Posted by Numba_33, Mon Dec-19-16 04:28 PM
or folks that aren't too much in the 'true school hip-hop' 1993-1994 audience that this specific message board typically or stereotypically caters to: Esperanza Spalding, Nai Palm from Hiatus Kaiyote (or the band as a whole), and/or the folks from KING.

If this website has interviews featuring these folks already, my apologies; I don't venture to the other portions of this website outside of the message boards too often. I would be cool to hear you pick their (musical) brains for a bit though.

I’d like to see if he still believes all that bullshit he spit in “Losing My Cool”.

Just start the interview by asking why he spent an entire book blaming an entire culture for him being an insecure dumbass who gravitated toward every negative stereotype hip hop had to offer and tried to pattern his life after those examples despite having a strong black father in his life trying to steer him in another direction.

Then follow up with a question about the way he tries to have it both ways, like when he blames Biggie for him slapping his girl while he tries to take responsibility.

Then ask him if he put any thought at all into his flawed interpretation and presentation of rap lyrics, such as when he claimed a misogynistic slant of Big Boi’s “Bulldog them hoes like them Georgetown Hoyas” and whether or not he was really stupid enough to miss all the ridiculously obvious wordplay and simile present in Rosa Parks, up to and including the fucking title, and really ingested that one line as a call to objectify and assault women.

You can close by asking if he put any thought at all into the angle of that book since all he really did was further confirm the suspicions and inherent bias of middle aged whites and others with inherently willful ignorance of hip hop on a cultural and historical level because many of them saw rthis book as the gospel truth of the evil that is hip hop.

Perhaps he meant to take a different tact on the book. You can give him a platform to clarify things.

Posted by LeroyBumpkin, Wed Dec-21-16 03:06 PM
As evidenced by this Christmas episode (and I've been thinking this since the first episode), y'all can carry a show for 3 hours. In fact some of the best moments are when y'all recap "what everyone has learned" at the end. The guests you've had so far have all been fantastic though.

Guest Ideas:

Pharrell Williams
Donald Glover
D'Angelo (for more than 2 minutes..ha)
Raphael Saddiq
Thundercat
Ghostface Killah
DJ Premier
Sheila E.
Me'Shell Ndegeocello
9th Wonder & Big Pooh (The Little Brother episode)
Nicolay (The Foreign Exchange episode)
Lyor Cohen
Al Green
Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis
Tina Turner
Clyde Stubblefield

...part of one of Meshells early Band alignments, known as the "Brethren" for a while....

...together they made some the best live music i've EVER heard. To this day, if being sent to a desert island for the rest of my life and i am only allowed to pick ONE 'section' of my musical collection to take with me...even in the midst of a LOT of great music, is no contest for, i'm grabbing ALL of my Live Meshell stuff...and this group above is a critical portion of it....

They've all done great things and played with more famous folks than Meshell, but selfishly, I would love to hear how these cats remember the creative process when they were playing with Meshell specifically. (just because thats where i first became aware of them as individuals, and thats where their music first satisfied my soul like no others have since...

so yeah, i know i'm gushing up there ^ about one of Meshells EARLY Band lineups, but tell your boy Mark Kelley, as far as Meshells BASSISTs go, HE's my go to fave no sheet!...i've got some live Meshell sets of the lineup where Mark is the Bassist and they are DEFinitely going with me to that Island for sure...

btw#1...yeah i just thought about it...Mark is probably a good way in right? He should be able to get Meshell to come do the show, ya?

btw#2...why ya'll steal Mark from Meshell's Band, maaaan??? (just jokin' i have no idea how that went down at all ;) i'm sure it was all good feelings all the way around....)

2992817, aw dang, well not sure when you reached out 2 her, but if it was in April...
Posted by Voodoochilde, Tue Jul-04-17 06:49 AM
....if it happened to in April when you reached out to her, there's a chance she may have been focused on some rather serious/immediate family issues she was dealing with at the time.

but if not, yeah, i do get the feeling that she's NOT a fan of talking about herSELF in the press, ...but i also get the feeling that she does kinda enjoy talking about OTHER peoples music, especially those who's music she's currently into (or has been into in the past). If i ever had the chance to interview her, that would be what i'd do...ask her about what music she's really into and why...what are her 'island records' and why...what are her favorite prince recordings and why...

but, yeah...gotta get her on the mike in the FIRST place in order to do that lol :)

thanks for giving it a shot man!

so, i read the original 15 post, and glanced at the overall thread (without reading it) and, based on my quick glance, i guess i assumed the desired format was 'list 1 name in title of each post'!

Hah! going back to actually read the entire thread NOW though....apparently i assumed wrong?!

LOL, my bad. ....in Urkle voice..."did i do thaaaat?"

whooops.

well, whats done is done i suppose....

that said, technically speaking y'all, it probably IS a little easier/faster for 15 to quickly scan just the entire threads subject lines to get the info, instead of having to open each individual post to see the info...

2981298, Session Musicians-...
Posted by Voodoochilde, Wed Jan-04-17 12:13 AM
How about periodically getting various studio musicians who worked on specific projects together and having them reminisce about the creative processes they recall: why certain choices were made, what things they experimented with before landing on a track that ended up being the final cut, etc, etc...i LOVE hearing that kinda behind the scenes stuff, and the good Session Musicians tend to play key roles in critical records, and can often be the difference between a decent record and a great record...

Maybe periodically pick a great record, (be it a great Album, or just a great Single) then get some of the musicians who contributed to it and have them reflect on how it went down...

sadly i'm now thinking about my wife's late uncle David Williams (a session guitarist on some pretty iconic albums...though you wouldn't know it if you just met him because remarkably, he was a very humble cat when it came to that.) My wife and i had been married for quite a while before i even realized that he was THAT David Williams. Once i found out though, i'd pick his brain for stories whenever i got the chance to talk with him...and man he had the BEST stories! i LOVED hearing whatever little creative detail about working in the studio on some of these iconic records.

Unfortunately he passed suddenly the same time MJ passed...still seriously bums me out, he was way too young and still vibrant and creative. he was such a FUN & FUNNY dude too. Man he could crack you up!

And me, i'm ALSO very SELFISHLY bummed because i know i had only scratched the surface of the many many stories he could have shared, stories i'll never get to hear.

RIP David Williams. You're STILL the man...

2981302, now that think about it...
Posted by Voodoochilde, Wed Jan-04-17 12:28 AM
this above approach might also be a great way to pay tribute to some of the greats we've lost, you know?

like, i would LOVE to hear the musicians who played on the late GREAT Teena Marie's amazing early records, (from Wild & Peaceful through It Must Be Magic) talk about helping to create those wonderful instant classic albums...(if i recall correctly the most of the musicians in this case were the Stone City Band, right? Man you KNOW they have some interesting stories...

but yeah, that approach could potentially provide some very interesting behind the scenes creative insights to some various iconic records, even when the main star is sadly no longer with us....and in those cases, as long as its handled right, (which I'm sure it would be) it could ultimately be a nice tribute to some of the great artists we've lost, you know?

just a thought...

...initially i was thinking Session Musicians, but we know the Engineers & Producers can play key roles in records & creative decisions too...so yeah...just choose a great record and track down the Session Musicians who worked on it and do some Session Musician shows, then pick another great record and track down some Engineers/Producers who worked on it and do some shows with them...

Partly to discuss the music nerdedtry involved to create their past classic works and to also get the nitty gritty on why the group fell apart, got back together again, and fell apart once again. Could be a possible or three parter depending how well folks are in the same room with each other.
2981415, A go-go themed show would be great
Posted by liger_trainer, Thu Jan-05-17 03:20 PM
Mentioned earlier in this thread, but I wanted to echo the idea.

Grab some OG pioneers - Trouble Funk, Sugar Bear, Whiteboy and Go-Go Mickey from RE, Kato Hammond is a go-go historian, etc.

Talk about the Malcolm Gladwell 10,000 hour concept. These men (and women) have spent countless hours performing sometimes six nights a week.

Live instrumentation and equipment over the years. The Live PA tapes that would be available direct from the sound board after the shows. Talk about the lack of growth and innovation in the music. It's a hard discussion to have, maybe, but it's real.

Sadly, I've been so out of touch with go-go music over the past ten years or so. My daughter is aware that it is a type of music, but she really has no idea.

if i do a GO GO Symposium:

if you can Narrow it down to FOUR PEOPLE

one of them HAS to be an eloquent HISTORIAN

not just a jaded member of an old crew but someone who bleeds the history

that can wax poetic about the culture.

one from the OLD SCHOOL like 81-87

one who ruled THE 90s like 95-99

one who has the torch now.

WHO?

2981722, 90's Era
Posted by liger_trainer, Tue Jan-10-17 09:45 AM
I'll say from like 1991 to early 2000 you have a split between Junk Yard Band, Rare Essence, Northeast Groovers and Backyard Band.

RE and JYB I covered in old school post above they would be the overlap with old and new-er era.

Northeast Groovers (one of my top two favs):
Known for The Water, Van Damme, Off Da Muscle, etc. you could get Chris "Rah Rah" Black.

Backyard Band - Of course you would need to grab Anwan "Genghis" Glover. Starred on The Wire

2981871, RE: 90's Era
Posted by kinetic94761180, Thu Jan-12-17 02:14 AM
we need genghis.

maybe rappa?

or how abt genny from pleasure/be'la donna?
2981896, RE: 90's Era
Posted by liger_trainer, Thu Jan-12-17 12:00 PM
See, I didn't know Chris changed his name to Rappa Dude. I don't really follow the new band structures anymore, so he's Rah Rah to me. Had to look it up...

He was my favorite front talker next to Buggs all through middle and high school ('91-'96).
2981939, RE: 90's Era

>See, I didn't know Chris changed his name to Rappa Dude. I
>don't really follow the new band structures anymore, so he's
>Rah Rah to me. Had to look it up...

yeah, i just don't know how rappa's arrogance would come across on a panel.

he is currently talking for n.e.g., what band, & project 71

>He was my favorite front talker next to Buggs all through
>middle and high school ('91-'96).

buggs is certified og classic, but i honestly don't think he could coherently navigate through 3 hrs of discussion

genghis is the draw.
2981902, Here's my suggestion.
Posted by liger_trainer, Thu Jan-12-17 12:34 PM
I'm throwing out multiple ideas, so let me just be more concrete.

Historian - Kevin "Kato" Hammond

My Mount Rushmore of current Go-Go - this overlaps old school though new music:

Steven "Buggs" Herrion - Junkyard Band
Living GOAT. Your favorite Go-go artists favorite artist. One of the early founders since 1980. Major record label experience, toured with major acts, etc.
https://youtu.be/akvakG55ZWg

Andre “Whiteboy” Johnson - Rare Essence
One of the OG's of Go-Go since 1976 or so.

Chris "Rah Rah" "Rappa Dude" Black - Northeast Goovers, What Band, 911, etc
Early 90's through the current era of music. Helped usher in the younger crowds to Go-Go music in the early 90s.
https://youtu.be/4WezKpyhqtM

Anwan "Big G" Glover - Backyard Band, starred on The Wire
Early 90's though current. Star power, obviously.

I know that is five, but that's who I would invite. You got a ton of history and insight into the current state of the music.

Also, Quest - Can I be in the room for this?!? I'll be the food runner, I make some awesome spiced coffee, whatever you need.
2986210, if you're still listening...
Posted by builtfromwax, Tue Mar-21-17 10:55 AM
...John "JB" Buchanon.

JB was a member of the Soul Searchers in the '70s, then joined Rare Essence in the 80s. he was still pretty active in preserving the culture through teaching a few years back: https://static1.squarespace.com/static/50ef0348e4b079dad8696356/t/51240d4ce4b08a761599d276/1361317196086/teach+the+beat+seminar+feb16+program.pdf

Posted by bearfield, Sun Jan-08-17 01:43 AM
guys like dj food, pc, amon tobin, coldcut, luke vibert, etc. who built their songs purely (or mostly) from samples but used it to make breakbeat, drum n bass, or just hip hop-ish beats designed to work without rappers. the people that predated or were contemporaries to dj shadow ~/endtroducing.../ (dj food + coldcut) or had a different spin on what could be done with sample based music (tobin and vibert). these guys dug for records as hard as american artists and did a lot of interesting things with samples during sampling's heyday

maybe try to track down some of the lesser known acts like 9 lazy 9, funki porcini, and up, bustle, and out, who purportedly went to jungles and other wilderness areas to sample sounds of nature and tribal music. or just gen up an excuse to talk to artists about digging culture in the early 90s in the UK

What was it like to be 16 and have a hit record?

Posted by seandammit, Thu Jan-12-17 01:45 PM
There are so many interesting facets to the songwriting process Cuomo has employed and his strange relationship with fans, coupled with the band's (often BIZARRE) reinventions throughout its career. Many of which didn't exactly work, and yet they are still beloved (though begrudgingly) by die-hard fans.

I know that there's a general lane that QLS has occupied thus far and I don't necessarily see a Weezer show fitting in that, but if the show does continue to expand and evolve into different directions, this *could* be a FASCINATING episode.
2981929, RE: if this happens, I could produce the whole episode lol
Posted by undeadsinatra, Thu Jan-12-17 02:02 PM
your post covers the exact reasons why i suggested this- -on the whole I don't think the reinventions and interactions with fans are known on a wide scale beyond the core fan base.

-The Heatmakerz;
-Stuart Matthewman;
-Nikka Costa;
-Massive Attack (once new album is done);
-Bink!
-Marci Klein (or anybody for good SNL musical guests stories and bookings, and get into production of musical performances);
-Pop & Oak (relevant producers, use a lot of samples in their music, Pop Wansel is Dexter Wansel's son, not doing a lot of media);
-Larry Gold;
-Benjamin Wright.

The "yeah, right" options :
-Quentin Tarantino;
-Lalo Schifrin;
-do a show with past Jamiroquai members with no Jay Kay, so : Stuart Zender and Toby Smith.

Which is why she could be a great candidate (assuming I'm not the only one in this position).

Quick glance at her Wikipedia page shows that you're going to get some...

...wait for it...

...LATIN QUARTER STORIES!

But I think everyone is to some extent intrigued by the world of porn and the fact that she has been able to venture out and pursue other fields makes it even more interesting...parallels between the music industry and the adult film industry (spoiler alert: you get pimped in the former more than the latter??), etc.

-did she ever consider changing her name to avoid being recognized

Ricky Powell. Used to love this guy but then one day I realized he's a fool, a clown, a jerk, a wasted photo talent, he's exactly the same type of person he tries dissing

Glen E. Friedman. Dude is a curmudgeon, just a miserable fuck, did you know he's a vegan? Don't worry if you don't know he'll mention it a bunch of times and how he's super duper rebellious and a renegade. I heard him on combat jack and was so excited to listen only to be dissappointed that this one time dope photographer was a cranky fuck
2985782, Mike Piazza,,, i don't know, he always seemed to have fun with
Posted by FunkyBoss, Wed Mar-15-17 10:17 PM
Eddie Trunk talking death metal on the radio back in the day. I'm sure you can find some kind of common ground.
2985784, Adrock. I tried resisting mentioning him or Mike D. But I can't anymore
Posted by FunkyBoss, Wed Mar-15-17 10:27 PM
you got them to come in for your NYU class. You MUST be able to get one of them to come in. (Mike is on the west coast being a beach bum so adrock maybe???)

BTW,, any audio available of that time they came to to your class?

you never hear anything about their music except licensed to ill. Licensed to ill this and licensed to ill that. But there's soooo much more man.

Please make it happen. Please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Probably the first famous MC or rapper from the 70s who did shows in Harlem and guest spots on Soul Train.

A lot of you cats like to claim that Cold Crush has rights to Rapper's Delight but i think Good Times was DJ Hollywood's break first and i don't even know if Hollywood himself knows if he invented the flow, voice, and cadence for that song. He may have actually coined "Hip Hop" according to a few sources.

2986688, CHICAGO HOUSE: Chip E, Jamie Principle, perhaps Lil Louis
Posted by DVS, Tue Mar-28-17 04:32 AM
I say this because when you East Coast cats talk about House Music...it seems to start with Larry Levan and/or Frankie Knuckles....while most of us Chicgoans call Ron Hardy the Godfather and not Frankie or Farley Jackmaster Funk.

Getting someone to look at the unique perspective Chicago had on the genre.

2986856, say what?
Posted by SoWhat, Wed Mar-29-17 02:25 PM
since when do 'most of us Chicagoans' say Ron Hardy is the godfather of House? LOL

it's pretty clear House Music started w/Frankie. since the name "House" came from the venue at which Frankie played - The Warehouse. and Ron took over after Frankie left the Warehouse.

clearly Frankie was first.

what you've hit on though is the 'divide' between early House Music camps, so to speak. Frankie, Ron and Farley have/had their own audiences. they blend in spots but they can be fairly distinct since each DJ/producer had his own style. they may have played some of the same records but they played them differently. ppl tend to be drawn to a certain style over the others.

but AFAIK there's no real debate about the origin of House.

2987746, Listen, I just want them to talk about it.

You never hear their story when they were one of the first BIG ACTS in hip hop. The production on those early records is still mind blowing. I'd love to hear about their time with Rush, touring, 80s New York. The transition of hip hop from the 80s to the 90s and where they kinda got lost. Also the So So Def album where Jermaine Dupri showed ultimate love and loyalty.

Posted by CherNic, Wed Jun-28-17 06:04 PM
- The original 5 - growing up in Orchard Park, early practices/shows, when they knew they made it
- Adding Johnny - Heartbreak album
- Bobby solo - legendary
- Ralph solo - does he regret not dropping earlier? Or a more sensitive (ba dum cha) way to ask that
- BBD - did they think Poison would STILL start a party?
- Johnny solo - that self titled solo album from 1990.... YO
- the Home Again album - my introduction to the group
- the movie
- what's next - is this tour really happening? Cuz they can have all my money
2992442, I thought that but they go way too deep to have them all at once...
Posted by HIM, Thu Jun-29-17 07:32 AM
that being the case, I figured, Biv would have the most to dig in to.
NE
BBD
Biv10 Records

I also think he'd honest enough to make it an awesome Ep.

They'd need to do Bobby by himself. They could prob. do Ralph as well.

Not sure Ricki and Ronnie have enough "stuff" to justify solo Eps.

Sean K told me. I wasn't listening live, but I heard it a few days later.

Cool to know that Prince Paul knew for a second that someone was named my name.

And that episode made me realize that I had bought about 90% of all of Prince Paul's (non single/one-off remixes) over the years.

I only hope there's some sort of De La / Prince Paul project in the future.

Or a reunited Prince Paul/Paul Barman single. (I think Holy Guacamole was the last song they did together.)
