2974751, Tiny Desk Concert: Common and Friends at the White House

http://pitchfork.com/news/68751-watch-common-perform-with-robert-glasper-and-bilal-at-the-white-house/

Man, this whole performance is wonderful. Got Bilal, Kareem Riggins, Robert Glasper, and some gorgeous woman on vocals and flute (who is that?!!!). Musically it sounds great, especially that second song A Letter To The Free.
2974760, Don't sleep on this. Really incredible
Posted by justin_scott, Tue Oct-04-16 02:06 PM
If this is what's on Common's upcoming album, i'm excited.
2974764, Any chance of some MP3s of this? n/m

Great spirit on this...looking forward to the new album.

2974825, Dope.

Kind of awkward at first knowing he was performing in front of such a small group but it got easier to watch cause the musicianship was amazing.

This dude can still write rhymes man. His flow is still off at times in his late-career but his rhymes are really, really good. I like the 3 new tracks here. Better than the first two that were released recently in terms of flow.

That song about Pops was chill-inducing. Such deep, dope shit. I can't wait to hear the studio version. That type of song is the reason I fell in love with Common's music in the first place. I don't think there's anyone who does introspection better in hip-hop over the years.
2975359, RE: Dope.

Yeah, once they just started creating for each other it jelled.
2975090, Man this was amazing. Glasper + Bilal are everything.

Common with live musicians....he should think about touring like this. Okay maybe not. But I love stripped down shows.
2975316, one of the best shows I've ever been to was Com w/ live band. EC tour.
Posted by High Society, Tue Oct-11-16 07:01 PM
band was A Black Girl Named Becky.

he doesn't tour w/ a band anymore?
2975317, I only saw him once. 06. It was just him and DJ.
Posted by CherNic, Tue Oct-11-16 07:20 PM
2975322, He's done both intermittently since EC I feel like.
Posted by Brew, Tue Oct-11-16 08:24 PM
He's dope live no matter which he decides. Black Girl Named Becky was great. DJ Dummy was always fun too. Seems to be his go-to tour DJ at least in my experience.

Think the last time I saw him live was like 2008 or 2009 and he was just with a DJ, but the time before that (only a year or two earlier) he was with a band.
2975696, i agree that he does both well
Posted by makaveli, Wed Oct-19-16 01:50 PM
he brings a lot of energy.
2975100, Studio version of the "Freedom Come" joint is at the end of "13th"
Posted by Boogie Stimuli, Sun Oct-09-16 05:19 AM
"13th" is an awesome documentary on Netflix.
2975500, correction: It's called "Letter To The Free"
Posted by Boogie Stimuli, Sat Oct-15-16 07:18 AM
2975520, Bought it on Amazon. This song has a healing quality. Beautiful

That was beautiful. Little Chicago Boy touched me for real. Pop's Raps were so dope they made me feel like he was my family for real. Com seems like he's back in his bag. Gonna check out this new album.

>and some gorgeous woman on vocals and flute (who is that?!!!).

I'm not sure I remember her singing, but the flute player is Elena Pinderhughes. She's one to watch, cuz you're right, she's dope af. If you haven't checked out Christian Scott's Stretch Music (2015), definitely check that out cuz she's all over that. If by chance Scott and his octet (he has 2 drummers in this current band!) come through your city, you MUST go. It'll be 50 times better than the CD, I guarantee. I caught them live at the Detroit Jazz Fest last year and Pinderhughes killed (well they all kinda did tho but she def stood out). Incredible improviser.
2975486, yeah...this was great...
Posted by Warren Coolidge, Fri Oct-14-16 11:02 PM

Posted by Brew, Mon Oct-17-16 12:08 PM
2975574, Black America Again
Posted by justin_scott, Mon Oct-17-16 12:50 PM
.
2975622, Ah I knew that. Someone explain "Again" to me.
Posted by Brew, Tue Oct-18-16 09:22 AM
Serious question. Like what is the significance of adding "again" to the title ? Excuse my ignorance.
2975630, from what i've read
Posted by justin_scott, Tue Oct-18-16 01:21 PM
the themes of the album could be relevant in any time period that black people have been in america, be it 1960 or 1800. i could definitely be wrong on that, but that's what i took from him talking about it.
2975633, Word.
Posted by Brew, Tue Oct-18-16 01:58 PM
I read that too. Still think it could've simply been titled "Black America" and had the same effect. But I asked cause I wasn't sure if maybe the title referenced some important speech from, say, the Civil Rights era or something, containing the term "Black America Again" that I wasn't privy to. Absent some sort of historical reference like that it just reads awkwardly as an album title to me.
2975674, I think the again
Posted by tariqhu, Wed Oct-19-16 09:15 AM
is a play on trump's make america great again.
2975697, That makes sense. Thanks.
