2968369, This shit doo doo
Posted by Nick Has a Problem...Seriously, Mon Jun-27-16 08:59 AM
2968375, can we send it back where it came from?
Posted by BrooklynWHAT, Mon Jun-27-16 10:14 AM
2968378, people want to hate, but that XXL freestyle was interesting.
Posted by sweeneykovar, Mon Jun-27-16 10:48 AM
if he wasn't called a "rapper" people would not trip half as hard
2968381, Interesting doesn't make it good
Posted by Nick Has a Problem...Seriously, Mon Jun-27-16 10:58 AM
2968389, right...interesting just means that
Posted by Mash_Comp, Mon Jun-27-16 03:12 PM
2968397, true. it also doesn't make it bad, either. it makes it just *that*.
Posted by sweeneykovar, Mon Jun-27-16 04:52 PM
additionally, I am definitely going to listen to the tape. I'm interested.
2968398, if he wasn't called a rapper, he'd be working at burger king.
Posted by justin_scott, Mon Jun-27-16 05:14 PM
.
2968400, I like what he said and the way he said it.
Posted by sweeneykovar, Mon Jun-27-16 05:40 PM
I'm not going to be wishing poverty and struggle on someone, esp young and Black, because I don't like their expression.
2968401, Who wishes poverty and struggle on him?
Posted by Cold Truth, Mon Jun-27-16 07:12 PM
>I'm not going to be wishing poverty and struggle on someone,
>esp young and Black, because I don't like

2968402, what does "working at Burger King" mean to you?
Posted by sweeneykovar, Mon Jun-27-16 07:52 PM
2968509, and that's where he'd be
Posted by justin_scott, Wed Jun-29-16 01:01 PM
lol at thinking this dude would be a teacher or a fire fighter. actually, he'd be a shitty drug dealer, so i was giving him credit.
2968511, you're a piece of shit. n/m
Posted by sweeneykovar, Wed Jun-29-16 02:11 PM
2968408, Skimmed through it
Posted by Stadium Status, Mon Jun-27-16 09:49 PM
Derivative, but it sounds more inspired than anything Future's done this year *ducks*
2968431, Its interesting how we expect artists to be fully formed out the gate
Posted by BigReg, Tue Jun-28-16 08:52 AM
Love him or hate him (im in the later category for the most part) you've got a 19 year old rapper who blew up on a demo song and we are expecting an A tier project out of him, lol.

One of the reasons I think that the ATL scene does so well is that there's a farm team built up around a few acts (primarily Gucci and his producers) that lets the acts hone their work over years.

This record isn't the worst ive heard...his future impression is decent. Theres also times where he's working on a more traditional NYC street voice (Make It Out) to break out from that shadow and the trap production is solid.

But it's a bit depressing how we've adapted to the pop hit cycle as hip-hop heads.

2968433, ok, but this isn't Section 80 or Nostalgia Ultra
Posted by Tiger Woods, Tue Jun-28-16 09:10 AM
this kid isn't showing ANY sign of originality or vision. It's just dumb beats and grunts.

There's a difference between this turd and a raw debut project that hints at something fresh - Section 80, Nostalgia Ultra, Thank Me Later, Slim Shady LP etc.

2968435, Those are exactly my point
Posted by BigReg, Tue Jun-28-16 09:48 AM
Those are debut albums AFTER years of hard work, professional work in fact. Kendrick/Drake spent a couple of years on the mixtape circuit before those records, Eminem had indie releases and Ocean was already in the system as dude in a major label song writing camp.

2968434, He's on a major
Posted by Nick Has a Problem...Seriously, Tue Jun-28-16 09:16 AM
Ye and president Push need to do they job
2968436, Yup. Its just disheartening the lack of A&R in the industry
Posted by BigReg, Tue Jun-28-16 09:50 AM
While this dude ain't somebody anybody is really going to cry for either way, its shocking how they just throw you out there.
2968440, 19 year old who blew up on another song and released an A project? Nas?
Posted by Innocent Criminal, Tue Jun-28-16 12:56 PM
It's possible, so there is precedent for expectations.
2968441, It took 3 years from his Live at the BBQ verse till his debut though
Posted by BigReg, Tue Jun-28-16 01:06 PM
>It's possible, so there is precedent for expectations.

And he had a killers row of people behind the board of vets to help him craft Illmatic along with whatever other advise/guidance they could give him.

Desiigner or however you spell it probably isn't the best example to show latent talent but the idea remains how we expect our artists to come out the oven fully baked with a near classic.
2968442, Earl Sweatshirt was 16 when his debut dropped.
Posted by Boogie Stimuli, Tue Jun-28-16 01:56 PM
He only had Tyler on the boards who was 17
at the time, I believe. Syd was engineering.
She was also really young.

2968443, There's tons of examples in hip hop of young first timers
Posted by Innocent Criminal, Tue Jun-28-16 02:05 PM
knocking it out the park. Rakim was 18 or 19 when Paid in Full came out. LL Was 16/17 when Radio came out. We can't use age as an excuse for someone being terrible. Some people have it and some don't, some of those that don't can get better.
2968446, Yeah, but my point is by throwing em on stage day one, this wont happen
Posted by BigReg, Tue Jun-28-16 02:28 PM
>some of those that don't can get better.

AGAIN, not saying this dude is the second coming of anybody, lol.

But its interesting how this kind of turnaround seems to be the norm.
2968445, there's all kinds of "actually" in the responses but you make a really
Posted by sweeneykovar, Tue Jun-28-16 02:24 PM
strong point. this isn't even exclusive to Desiigner but he's a glaring example of it. artists are either toiling to break out of obscurity or having to go from A-Z publicly and quickly. tough out there.
2968447, Yup. It's a shame too
Posted by BigReg, Tue Jun-28-16 02:34 PM
You've got your acts that actually cultivate a fanbase/body of work, blow up, and the label comes to 'sign' you as if they are doing you a favor.

On the inverse you've got a sea of artists that could have been something but the label basically put em out there on their own to figure shit out. This reminds me of the Mr.Exquire read in rollingstone a few years back.

http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/mr-muthafuckin-exquires-music-biz-misadventures-20140620

Where obviously he didn't have as big a hit as Panda but def. had a buzz. While labels always sucked/were shady, it makes you wonder if twenty years ago there would have been at least some dudes there to help him cobble together some kind of project.
2968448, the folks that are able to build careers are the people who have the

access/resources/privilege of having a team around them to help them in their development. that's never not happened with a success, that I can think of.
2968459, Nah, if you suck, you suck. Might be a great kid, tho.
Posted by Orbit_Established, Tue Jun-28-16 05:31 PM

If you're not good at rapping, you're not.

We're not judging him as a person.

We're just saying he sucks.
2968462, I hear you. I don't think he sucks. I think he's trying something
Posted by sweeneykovar, Tue Jun-28-16 06:36 PM
very different that could end up working amazingly or could end up stalling in a month or three. it definitely doesn't suck to me. he's taking a chance that reminds me of Cudi 7-8 years ago, Thugger 2 years ago, etc.

but if he sucks to you, I can't change that.
2968506, He's made "Timmy Turner" into an actual song
Posted by astralblak, Wed Jun-29-16 12:29 PM
and it sounds like a slapper

2968508, Shump got a title, now he making rap albums. Rumble, young man.
