2968170, so i went & tried to listen to pm dawns catalog...
Posted by Bblock, Wed Jun-22-16 12:18 PM
no dice
shit's still wack
i'm surprised he passed, and wish he was still alive
however, his music was wack
from the bitten de la soul eye know flow
to the pop music sheen on the breakbeats
i didn't find a song i could connect with and enjoy
maybe that boomerang soundtrack song
but that's about it
all them fuckin' break beat records he used to house at the roosevelt
and that was the best he could come up with?
goes to show you, it ain't the records, it's the man
prolly has/had the dopest collection
but got the wackest music and beats
eh
it's all subjective
2968171, not even gonna lie...i have NO intention of listening.
Posted by MISTA MONOTONE, Wed Jun-22-16 12:37 PM
no disrespect intended. I wasn't a fan.
2968172, me neither, but after reading ?uests ig post, i thought
Posted by Bblock, Wed Jun-22-16 12:47 PM
maybe i missed something
let me go back and listen
now that i'm older
nah...shit's wack, b
2968174, I had never given them a chance

Wasn't a purposeful snub or active hate, just didn't seem like something I'd like.

Reading a few of the articles since Prince Be's passing almost all of them made reference to being ahead of their time and his sample-work being impressive. I listened to a few songs at random and didn't hear what the fuss was about to be honest. :/

I have a long road trip coming up and will give the essential albums of theirs a front to back listen.

I don't like the beat anymore because its just a loop. ALC didn't FLIP IT ENOUGH!

Flip it enough? Flip these. Flip off. Go flip some f*cking burgers.(c)Kno

2968175, First album had beats

Dude couldn't sing or rap, but the first album had beats.

And I'd rather listen to that album than, say, Kid Cudi. Or a lot of these other rapper/singers. I know that's not setting the bar very high, but that's mainstream hip-hop these days.

I don't know about the whole he can't sing thing. He killed I'd Die Without You. And the lyrics were not predictable or trite.

You have to consider the context. I think one of the main reasons they were seen as more pop was because they were really influenced by that British/euro sound that was kind of dream pop, definitely more r+b influenced (especially on their second album). They were rooted in hip hop style, sampled beats production, but were far more interested in making pop songs out of that foundation.

Now, considering all that, it's pretty awesome how he weaved in all the obscure samples that he did.

2968183, i give him props for breakbeat usage, but then i take

2968180, I've been listening

to what I can on Spotify. And fuck it. I've been digging it.

The beats go, the lyrics are eccentric enough to challenge the listener to figure out what the hell he is saying...

not sure why the hate.... did I get back in the day... yeah, kinda... but no, where anything goes.... nope... shit is solid as anything else

2968182, It wasn't his time......

I was never a fan.. there was too much east coast stompin to even hear his cotton candy softness...

also he tried to diss the God KRS and CHuck D. then when he got tossed off the stage in the BX it was a wrap....

I get all the talk about influencing drake and whoever else... but ... meh

prayers for his family tho....

I was seeing folks giving props to their catalog, so I was thinking that maybe since I'm older and a lot more open than I was as a teenager, I'd come around. Nah, I can't get with that polished sound that you talked about. Them joints still sound cheesy and soft and gives me that same feeling of 'bleh' that I got back in the day. Respects to the dead but I can't get with them joints except maybe that one joint "I'd Die Without You" (the Boomerang joint).

Since 1976
2968832, he better than much of the garbage out now
Posted by mistermaxxx08, Thu Jul-07-16 03:06 PM
he was from a different era and happen to hit. i will say this if you could accept Hammer, Puffy and Dr Dre than you can give PM Dawn a spin or two.

bottom line they hit for a moment and lets not act like PM Dawn was as cornball as me Phi Me or something?

2968915, I couldn't STAND Me Phi Me.

Good gravy, his music sucked.

Not that it's necessarily the same people praising one and downing the other, but the same thought came to my mind when I heard "Augustine"

Def a De La type flow and sample for that matter. Clearly inspired by 3 is the Magic Number.

Def appreciated their alt vibe as well as lyrical/musical approach.
