Posted by _Torchbaras, Tue Apr-12-16 04:40 AM
I really wanted to use that part but the chord progression seemed too fast paced for me to utilize it - you came correct!

Nice lil added bassprogram, thats always an auto +1 from me, long as it hits the notes lol...

Drums are LIVE and has the bottom AND the crisp, dope!!!

I had the base down the day Torch posted, I was ready to go since it had been so long since I participated in one of these.

Really simple beat, glad for this just to get in some mix practice.

Typical shit from me....

Lemme know what y'all think

Feedback/critique will be returned in kind....

Thanks for the ears.

If I feel up to it, I may try a more free-hand/less traditional flip of this over the weekend.

2962540, You already know fam!
Posted by _Torchbaras, Thu Apr-14-16 03:39 AM
This is vintage you and a perfect example of your style when at its dopest IMHO!!! Got that Native Tongues Vibe, which i was hopin cats would bring when introduced to organ and Electric piano chords like the ones from the source! Of course you went all EXTRA and added Vocal fx for details like you tend to do, and thats one of the Reasons i love your style - its Classic boom bap w the new era Dilla drum swing BUT with that extra layer of details that makes it its own!!! Much respect and props on the bold wobble bass move LOL... +1 for pitchin the lo chords around like that melodywise!
2962564, RE: You already know fam!
Posted by liveguy, Thu Apr-14-16 11:07 AM
Always appreciate the feedback, fam.

You know I'm all about that boom bap!

I know you holding back on yours to drop a bomb on this thread HAHA!

2964373, Yours Is The Only One I Liked
Posted by Dj Joey Joe, Sun May-01-16 12:56 AM
Not saying others did a good job in flipping the beat on some other shit but Liveguy kept it boom-bap to where I could listen to it without cutting it off after five seconds, infact I listened to it twice; dub the chord changes and the busta vox in there too.

2964376, RE: Yours Is The Only One I Liked
Posted by liveguy, Sun May-01-16 02:36 AM
Thank you for the feedback, my man.

I think everyone did their thing on this joint, but I DEFINITELY appreciate the kind words.

Gotta keep it boom bap!!!!

Thanks again for the ears, fam.
2964455, You know what?
Posted by _Torchbaras, Mon May-02-16 01:23 PM
I preciate the brutal honesty, the chops often reads a lil afraid of "that" kinda feedback, instead we tend to "small up" somethin instead of givin it the full constructive, and at times, destructive feedback treatment! I offcourse am glad w the positive tone, compared to the rest of OKP, but a lil edge is healthy to some degree!
2962537, i slowed it all down
Posted by LAbeathustla, Thu Apr-14-16 03:06 AM
i chopped up all the parts with out drums and started from there...i ended up basically slowing everything down and using chopped parts from there...i added the wobble synth at the end...

https://soundcloud.com/djgourmetdachef/pure-vm/s-L3nfM
2962539, Beautiful!
Posted by _Torchbaras, Thu Apr-14-16 03:29 AM
Trippy dreamy vibes got me closin my eyes and zonin out over here lol... The drums are raw and a great contrast that makes the elements come together instead of apart! Synth was soup and the Way you took out the drums along the Way Worked wonders! Great stuff man!!!
2962566, I dig the vibe!
Posted by liveguy, Thu Apr-14-16 11:12 AM
This that good Sunday, chill music.

That snare is kickin' and I like the subtle way you used that synth.
2962592, thanks fellas...i prolly been listenin to too much Westside Gunn
Posted by LAbeathustla, Thu Apr-14-16 12:49 PM
hence the tempo and old school break
2962815, Maan, me too!!!
Posted by _Torchbaras, Sat Apr-16-16 06:56 PM
That lofi grit!!!
2963034, so far everyones killing it with the drums.
Posted by araQual, Wed Apr-20-16 03:01 AM
this is no exception.
synth was a great addition.
i do the whole "i can hear such-n-such over this" a lot but it's for real cos it's usually the first thing that comes to mind. that said, for sum reason this had a Pharcyde flava to it (a slower more chill Pharcyde tho).
makes me wish i still smoked.

2962542, where judono at???

2962713, you went straight to the left field here
Posted by liveguy, Fri Apr-15-16 12:21 PM
but that's what I like about these posts....

Everyone's joints sound VERY different compared to the source material.

I be loving that isht!

What I can see with this is some vocals of some kind...

Either a very skilled MC that can flow over this pattern or a singer/harmonizer getting busy on some spacey next level shit, which is what this is.

I like it, fam!

Main critique is your levels are low on your drums, so bring those out more because they are really dope and smack nicely, just need more presence.

Keep it up, dude!
2962816, Soundin like...
Posted by _Torchbaras, Sat Apr-16-16 07:05 PM
It came rite off the cassette! Was just commentin on the lofi aesthetic elsewhere... As Stated before, i really wanted to use that part so im glad yall went and fired it up!!! Drums are uptempo, rumblin and pannin, which is completely the opposite of what i do with mines, but as liveguy Said, thats exactly what makes these posts extra - hearin soo Many different takes on the same source, forcin me to Think outside the box next goround! Keep on the good work man!!!
2963035, the drum pattern is sick.
Posted by araQual, Wed Apr-20-16 03:03 AM
dug the lo-fi vibe.
luv wat u did with the sample.

V.
2964010, thatt bass and drum combo w effect is dope...its crazy but i hear

2962934, #5, here go mines -
Posted by _Torchbaras, Mon Apr-18-16 04:06 PM
Lil bit different this time round, had some fun with it, got LOOSE!

https://soundcloud.com/torchbaras/chops16-se

Aight, so I think I initially chopped the open organ chords and played around til the melody hit, then I went and dug up some live drums from another source, one for kix n hats, another for snares.

Then I added vinyl crackle cause thats the not so secret secret, or at least one of em lol. Then came some bells and a cymbal to complete the live feel for the drums... I think this is where I added the short echoed brass stabs cause thatd fit the aesthetic...

Then I went to my Illmind library and borrowed some grunts that had the oldshool feel as well. Added an extra horn line to separate chorus from verse aaand played the bass by hand. Well, by tappin my keyboard anyways lol... And thats that!

Oh yeah, ruffed it up pretty bad w a bitcrusher and some ugly maximizin...

Hope yall like it, feel free to comment, feedback preciated as always!!! Need that to grow yaknow...
2962942, that sh*t is dope
Posted by howardlloyd, Mon Apr-18-16 05:40 PM
drum programming - check
sample flips - check
LOW LOW END -check...

has a really nice "live" feel but still has the sample grit...

kudos...

i expected nothing less
2963419, Thx maan!!!
Posted by _Torchbaras, Sat Apr-23-16 08:15 AM
Yeah I kept the LOs in there for once, bit afraid it mudded it up but it came out Nice, preciate the ears!!
2962976, maaannnnnn
Posted by liveguy, Tue Apr-19-16 11:44 AM
Joint is super dope!

Mixed really well....

The drum program is crazy and the horn add was a good choice; fits in very well.

This is good work as per usual from you.

Great stuff, man!
2963420, Yooo!!
Posted by _Torchbaras, Sat Apr-23-16 08:19 AM
Again, preciate the feedback maan!! Yup felt good to go live drums instead of the usual stiff smack hah, might try that on a lil more for sport! And yeah, got happy with the horns, needed somethin to emphasize the chorus, but i didnt really believe itd fit like that LOL... Peace!
2963036, how u gonna be so smooth yet so tough? lol.
Posted by araQual, Wed Apr-20-16 03:07 AM
achieved a perfect balance of both on this joint.
laid back hip hop joint BUT...i found myself singing along to this, dude. could be all kindsa extra sexy with the right singer or just as a straight r&b/soul song.
regardless: u killed it, resurrected it and killed it again.

y'all are settin the bar high as fuck right now lol.

V.
2963421, Hahaa, BDK style!
Posted by _Torchbaras, Sat Apr-23-16 08:24 AM
Smooth n tough LOL. I preciate the words maan, and im usually a rap first type dude but the minute i sat back and really enjoyed all i could Think of was somebody singin the bridge and Half the chorus before the rap parts, switchin back n forth! Thatd be soo dope... Thx for vibin! Now where yours at?
2964016, you definitely have a sound of your own...
Posted by LAbeathustla, Wed Apr-27-16 09:53 AM
i can always expect that knocking ass basssline with booming drums....sample well incorporated...love the subtle horn chops and that dusty vinyl static sound..phonte or oddisee need to get on this..lol
2964092, Thx maan...
Posted by _Torchbaras, Wed Apr-27-16 06:03 PM
Im tryna step outa my comfort zone here w a lil throwback and I still sound like me lol, nah for real tho, I preciate you takin time out to listen and comment!!!

Posted by liveguy, Sat Apr-23-16 06:06 AM
I think you should have brought that bass in sooner tho.

Is that second beat using the source sample?

That was nice!!

Your drums sound nice and crisp...you just need to meld (lower) those into your melody a *tad* bit more and this shit is butters.

Good work overall as I really like what you did with that melody.

That second beat tho!!!

I fucks with it!
2963417, RE: I like it
Posted by kaiba., Sat Apr-23-16 06:27 AM
The second one, yeah its in there. But its a really small sample, I wasn't even going to fuck with at first.

2963418, Def. Nice grooves here!!!
Posted by _Torchbaras, Sat Apr-23-16 08:13 AM
I like how you comped your drums, got both warmth and punch, let em dominate a Lil more cause they dope! For the 1st part i Think the a piece stood stronger, Nice two chord melody! 2nd part/outro you was flexin, pitched guitars w the rollin bongos was sweet!!! Much respect for playin the pitch game to create somethin new instead of keepin the root key!!! Simple yet solid work maan!!!
2964018, drum pattern is super dope...that fill in the beginning is hot
Posted by LAbeathustla, Wed Apr-27-16 10:02 AM
i love how you brought the lil melody in....yeah if u brought that kick in earlier maaaaaaan!!!!.....shit slammin tho.... im feeling the second one too..your drums are crispy...turn that sample up a little

https://soundcloud.com/confessionsofacurlymindredux/vahe_nightblossoms.

HOKAY.
its been a minute.
other than these chop poasts no longer existing, i been off working on an album for over a year+ now. in that time i kinda dropped the drums and picked up an acoustic guitar. also stopped smoking for at least 4 months to see if it improves my vocal abilities at all.
anyways.
for this joint i snagged about 3 samples: the main loop heard throughout majority of the song and all the keyboard flourishes.
the drum break i grabbed from sum old obscure japanese funk tune that remains untitled.
i then added live tambourine for half the joint, and ended it with an acoustic guitar switch-up. i had sum percussion done for it too but it kinda sucked so i dumped it.
WAS gonna leave it an instro but was feelin myself as per fucking usual, and been wanting to write a night-themed song for a while now.
oh, and it's 7mins long.
i totally understand if none of y'all wanna see it thru to the end lol. regardless, shit was fun. thanks for bringin this back Torch!

*note: mixing levels may be slightly off due to my right ear being half blocked for over a week now.

lyrics:

NIGHT BLOSSOMS

daylight comes
in a wave of hums
and i still don't know my truth
the sun brings fun
motivates me to run
but i always end up further away
from you
if i close my eyes
the world still shines
& time & space
are no longer in view
when the plants arise
greeting clear blue skies
i'm supposed to feel good
but i'm not over you

it comes & goes
like a tidal flow
on an endless plain
but nobody knows
a persistingly true
love dance with you
i'd say it's 'bout time
but there's no time to lose

hooo-oh-ohh, hooo-oh-ohh
hooo-oh-ohh, hooo-oh-ohh
hooo-oh-ohh, hooo-oh-ohh
hooo-oh-ohh, hooo-oh-ohh
hooo-oh-ohh, hooo-oh-ohh
hooo-oh-ohh, hooo-oh-ohh
hooo-oh-ohh, hooo-oh-ohh
and the night only blossoms in June

darkness comes
and a moonbeam runs
cascading through my hair, in June
there's a battle won
as i vanquish the sun
and reclaim my sour mood
from you
once i opened my eyes
to this world of bright lies
i could finally see my path, through
all the mud and flies
never thought would disguise
the hidden light of the moon

it ebbs & flows
like winter ghosts
to a painless end
that we all should know
irresistible you
would never ever do
i'd say it's all love
but there's no love in you

hooo-oh-ohh, hooo-oh-ohh
hooo-oh-ohh, hooo-oh-ohh
hooo-oh-ohh, hooo-oh-ohh
hooo-oh-ohh, hooo-oh-ohh
hooo-oh-ohh, hooo-oh-ohh
hooo-oh-ohh, hooo-oh-ohh
hooo-oh-ohh, hooo-oh-ohh
and the night only blossoms in June.

2963592, Uh ohh, musician at work!!!
Posted by _Torchbaras, Mon Apr-25-16 06:55 AM
Not to belittle anybody, but this is testament to the diff between a natural acoustic musician and bein strictly digital like myself! Theres a wholeness to your composition that makes this a completely diff animal that the reg beatheads despite usin the same source material - i envy that w the utmost respect LOL! See, i manipulate rather freely within my tried n tested boom bap box, but i could never stray to far from that before enterin deep waters, you on the other hand has the to ability to really build from those lil blocks and add on whatever your creative vision says to add, i applaud that freedom but it wouldnt work without the techniques and skills of years of practice and findin ones own musical identity, and i can hear all that in your pieces!!! The way the layers blend so smooth both rhythmically and pitchwise, the subtle details in arrangement thru out, shit, even the lyrics and sangin was on point!!! You a shinin natural not much else to say really!!! Thanks for perspective and beautiful music!
2963989, dont even know what to say to that cept thanks muchly
