if memory serves me correct, before becoming a rapper canibus was actually lost boyz manager with charles suitt on their first 2 records.

he and charles suitt founded 'group home', which i believe was an actual subsidy label distributed through universal that lost boyz, a+, canibus, panama p.i. (and i think herb mcgruff) were all inked to in the late 90's.

he was 50/50 split owner of the imprint he was signed to + his mans charles suitt was VP of A&R for universal urban by that time in 1998.

so, he would have had plenty of leeway to get bink!, e. sermon, no id, whoever else... he just entrusted everything to wyclef/jerry wonder who were not nearly as talented rap producers as their PR in 1998 would've lead someone to believe.
