Hugh Jackman
The Dickies' "It's Huge"
https://youtu.be/1IZi-b_z-5k
REASON: The chorus is simple, because the title sounds like "Hugh", thus:
"it's huge
my love for you is huge
my love for you is huge"

Nick Offerman
Evelyn 'Champagne' King's "Shame"
https://youtu.be/OMbty5vEBGU
REASON: He recently shaved, although by the time he hits the show, he may have grown his mustache and beard back but I'll take a chance, so you guys can change the lyric to "shaved".

So either:
Dan Hartman " Relight my fire "
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1i--HyjCsX8#t=50s

Why? Lyrics could be seen as to compliment the title of the book. (I didn't realize that Dan Hartman died in 1994.)

Jamie Foxx
Beck's "Hollywood Freaks"
https://youtu.be/fYtF30ipZZ0
REASON: His new album is called HOLLYWOOD and while "Hollywood Swingin'" may be more apt, I rarely ever go "apt" so it's a chance for the horn section to rap this, I'll go for it.

Carla Gugino
The Allies' "Emma Peel"
https://youtu.be/iXvewKrgvUs
REASON: Cugino stars in SAN ANDREAS as "Emma", thus name recognition. Long before Nirvana became the "it" band for Seattle, a lot of people up here loved bands like The Allies, especially a song that was a huge hit in 1983 and 1984.

The fault in question will affect many of us up here in the Pacific Northwest, since the fault is also connected with the Cascadia subduction zone. In other words, if there is a "big one", the entire west coast may feel it so... if it's a way to make some Seattle connection to my suggestion, then there we go.

Sting
Ohio Players' "Honey"
https://youtu.be/Uo10yzdxbh4
REASON: Okay, if I am able to win another week for suggestions, I hope to suggest the Ohio Players for one week, so I want to start things early. The reference "Honey" is of course because Sting's name refers to a bee, how he used to dress in the early days of The Police. Extra points if you recreate the gesture from the inside of the HONEY cover. Not of Ester Cordet but...

Kevin Connolly
Ohio Player's "Ecstasy"
https://youtu.be/JPxg3G1pxQs
REASON: He plays Eric in ENTOURAGE, his nickname is "E", and "E" is the late 80's/early 90's for ecstasy. So while "Honey" represents the Mercury era, I figured I better suggest one from the Westbound era, partly because suggesting anything from the Arista or Boardwalk eras is pointless. Which of course means you might say "hey, why not I use "Take De Funk Off, Fly"? Anyway, "Ecstasy" it is from me.

I am not the final arbiter of this, so we'll await ?uest's ruling.

If I have any say in the matter I'd say this: Skip the hits and play the b-sides and early material.

Stuff like: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=03_YG8HpFT4 is better than Devo.

how do we handle deaths?

we two weeks behind because of BB King and Louis Johnson

do we still honor the winner? or death overrides the winner?

i'll let y'all discuss.

who won the week after "The Monkees"?

i got Saddiq on lock but i wanna know do i do

previous week
then Saddiq
then Devo?

cause once 50 die in 5 years time the winner will be waiting months for me to catchup
y'all decide the rules
2932755, I kinda feel like death has gotta come first
Posted by seandammit, Sat May-23-15 05:39 PM
Not to make it too convoluted, but maybe cap the wait-list at three? In other words, if you have the next 3 artists lined up and then someone dies, the oldest one in the cue gets dropped? I mean, it's only like ten of us actively playing the game so if someone gets really upset that their winning pick got dropped, they can always resubmit it next time they win?

I just feel like an iconic musician's death trumps all.
2932824, Well, death ultimately has to trump
Posted by CaptNish, Sun May-24-15 12:19 PM
It's respectful and timely. As for how to handle the winner selections, how about just calling that week a wash and moving on instead of stock piling? Just staying up to date. Because if you are already getting lost on what all was suggested for it with the backlog you got now, why make it harder on yourself to stack more one that? I mean, they're suggestions. In the end, don't make more work for yourself where it's not needed, y'know?

Though if you are backlogging, I had the Clash in there one week somewhere lol

Do we have a list of who was done already and when? Is that on the site, Tom?

ps - I post in a few Monkees groups on FB and when you guys did them, I got all of these messages from my fellow nerds like, "Dude... do you know why the Roots are playing the Monkees this week on Fallon!?" Cracked me up.

2933028, What are the rules?

I see the music for a single show generally (excluding free-styling/intro music to bits/miscellaneous grab-ass-ery) like this:

Intro/show number (area code patrol)
Desk Walk
Into commercial 1
Out of commercial 1
Into commercial 2
Out of commercial 2
Into commercial 3
Out of commercial 3
Into commercial 4
Out of commercial 4
Outro

Desk walk has had several different functions.
1)Themed weekly artist (ie, what we're talking about here.)
2)Sit-in guests feature (Jimmy says "That was of course the incredible Darrel Abbot and Darrel has a new album out titled "Screw Vincent.")
3)Death tribute musics (B.B.King)
4)Topical and/or random (The "Hollywood" themed songs for L.A. week.)

For sit-ins we occasionally get music in/out of commercials that is related to them. Steven Tyler singing Aerosmith songs, etc.

So there is a possibility of having themed music (or music with associated publishing costs) played at times other than desk music.

For the "Death music" could it be more effective to load them up into a single day and play them for desk walk AND in/out of commercials? That way the twitter verse/social media has a concentrated event to talk about.

Or logistically do all members of The Roots get a list of songs to learn for the following week, and that's why moving to a week of desk walk music was chosen? (I'll bet it's getting asymptotically harder to create new sandwiches.)

In any event honoring the dead trumps making Tom or Sean or Jon or Nate or Augusto or Randy and/or The Rest giggle :)

rates do vary

the cheapest rate is guest walk out music that you guys suggest for.

actually no, the cheapest is "mid show spurts"

so if jimmy were to talk about how "eye of the tiger" scared him as a 10 year old and he goes into song. as long as the song is under 30 seconds, we have a cheap flat rate.

suggestion songs for guest are 2nd cheapest.

"walk over" songs are 3rd cheapest (the song after jimmys monologue and he says "ladies and gents THE ROOTS!"

-the best payoff songs are when musical guests perform their song in full and songs that go into and out of commercials.

totally different rates.

i have no clue why but it just is.

and therefore a cat like Prince is now cool with some of his music being used for guests, but wants WAAAAAY more if we go into "i wanna be your lover" going to commercial.

so thus NBC is like "only do prince for guest walk ons. NOT fir commercials.

so to answer your questions, these suggestions can ONLY be for "jimmy desk walk music"

Here's my best guess at who won, what was played, and what is
still outstanding.

I'm unclear sometimes what is being played because of deaths,
guests, or special occasions. Sometimes I jsut don't know what
was played.)

Please give me corrections here and I'll update the
spreadsheet:

I think we have 3 queued up now:
The Clash - Captnish (from season 2 week 10)
Raphael Saadiq - Seandammit (from season2 week 11)
Devo- Tom Hayes (from season2 week 12)
