Tuxedo still champ.
2930782, this thing cant even SMELL tuxedo

2931720, Tuxedo smells like mothballs and vintage-clothing stores
Posted by Bombastic, Thu May-14-15 06:11 PM

Pharrell all over it (background vocals/chorus/probably some writing).
The first three songs Snoop Dogg is very absent
This could exist as a double album with GIRL being the first part.

It is a very enjoyable album, Snoop Dogg & Pharrell are a winning team.

2930638, Girl part II.
Posted by Hitokiri, Wed May-06-15 04:49 PM
Agreed.
2930648, if anything this is the album girl should've been.

minus 2-3 joints girl sucked.
2930779, I don't think the album is on Spotify yet

the Gwen Stefani joint. I can't believe I'm typing this, but that joint is BONKERS! DAYUM!

"This City"
"R U A Freak"
"Awake"

are 3 Frankensteins in a row. Trump tight.

Those are the absolute keepers for me, and DAMN Kendrick stunk up that
last joint. Very awkward.

Anyway - that joint w/ Gwen Stefani GOES. It will RULE July. Be prepared

I feel like the beat is actually kinda flat compared to the rest of the album. Feels like it's missing something.

I don't think I've felt a Snoop album since R&G, but this is dope. Good spring/summer music; should be great for cookouts when I fire up the great. I'm cool with him barely rapping at all on it too.
2930723, Wait... you didn't like Blue Carpet Treatment?

This ain't better than Tuxedo though.
2930668, i would like to reel back my call above.

both are great and complementary.
2930725, I agree, both of them are going on the BBQ playlist

2930683, What's the difference between this and the Dam project?
Posted by revolution75, Wed May-06-15 08:16 PM
2930728, Pharell is more diverse musically, and more Charlie Wilson. Plus
Posted by phemom, Thu May-07-15 09:07 AM
Snoop is singing on 90% of the record and there's little cursing. Both albums are comparable, but they are different records IMO
2930730, yep...way different
Posted by Mash_Comp, Thu May-07-15 09:48 AM
and i liked that Dam record but this is another beast altogether musically.

Posted by Hellyeah, Sat May-09-15 10:17 AM
"so many pros"..it's just too much of the same sound back to back

i put PNC right after "this city" and now the album is a solid 4.5/5
2931138, Not feeling the last 2 tracks, but everything else is great.
Posted by BNueve, Mon May-11-15 05:52 AM
surprised at how much I liked this album.
2931158, Snoop's my favorite rapper, and this is cool, but Tuxedo >>>
Posted by -DJ R-Tistic-, Mon May-11-15 11:45 AM
The fact that it's basically the same sound, but Tuxedo's just has more legit Funk and a lushness to it. I almost wish Snoop coulda rapped on their project, or even that all four of em could do something together.
2931719, I don't get what's good about Tuxedo, sounds like a rehash of stuff that
Posted by Bombastic, Thu May-14-15 06:07 PM
I would much rather go back and listen to the original source material on.

I'll take this Snoop record over that all day and I don't even like it like that.
2931845, It's still bangin though. Sounds extremely crisp, still great melodies
Posted by -DJ R-Tistic-, Fri May-15-15 05:28 PM
and energy to it. And it has enough of a twist to sound modern, doesn't just sound like leftovers.
2933275, I can't recall a melody from Tuxedo w/out it on but this Bush album has
Posted by Bombastic, Fri May-29-15 05:33 AM
each one running thru my subconscious at random for the past few weeks.

Admittedly I listen to it more but there's a reason for that.

Beck doing Midnight Vultures was more memorable to me than what Hawthorne is doing here, at least on the latter you still felt his own artistic character/charisma where this is basically an indie JT suit-and-tie take on early 80's roller rink jams that leave me wanting to just play the source material for a true fix.

Bush on the other hand is a put-on/let-it-ride album.

I hope I remember to ask you about this comparison in a year or two offline after the initial wave has cleared, when I see u out somewhere and ask you if you still think Tuxedo trumps it then.

2931664, Dope album!

Posted by OldPro, Fri May-15-15 05:15 PM
These pitchfork & billboard type reviews just remind me how little respect music like this got from outlets back in the day.. this is a hard groove oriented album and some folks just don't appreciate clean shit like this.
2931844, Oh and I agree it's better than Tuxedo

2932073, oh yeah, great comparison with Tuxedo

they're definitely in the same vein.

2931846, I went to the album release party, the crowd was kinda ehh to the songs
Posted by -DJ R-Tistic-, Fri May-15-15 05:29 PM
I know that they didn't know them yet, but they didn't seem to have any interest in hearing the new songs. Pharrell was there, but Charlie wasn't.
2931885, Isn't like that for every Snoop concert tho?
Posted by phemom, Sat May-16-15 09:56 AM
Snoop doesn't come to Detroit much, but the last time was here was when Malice in Wonderland dropped and the crowd wasn't into it unless it was from 2001 and back, Beautiful & Drop It Like It's Hot. Yet he did nothing but bangers for 2 hours.

Forget Hov, Snoop should do a deep cuts concert. When he performs he just performs hits because he has so many of them.
2931956, he was great at the roots picnic last year
Posted by makaveli, Sun May-17-15 08:37 AM
2931876, this album bangs without a doubt.
Posted by Dr Claw, Sat May-16-15 09:20 AM
if we comparin', I definitely prefer the music of Tuxedo (because the "modern" sound is always gonna lose out to these ears), but there are multiple elements of this album that work much better than that album for me. The Snoop + Charlie vocal combo, Pharrell's in-and-out appearances, the general "clean" feeling of this album. The idea of "you know what they meant to say, but they didn't need to actually say it" that is prevalent throughout this album is actually an underappreciated art, and Snoop, Pharrell and friends pull it off.

Jabronis coming around (I'm mostly thinking those reviews that miss the mark) thinking that it's gonna be a Snoop Dogg rappin' album and mad that it isn't, haven't been paying attention to his career these last few years. Snoop has really carved an interesting niche in these last years, and this album just adds to it.

and really, I'd rather Pharrell make more music like this. If he did, we wouldn't be clowning him for the "New Black" and "Blurred Lines" foolishness.

Gotta give it up for Charlie Wilson. Between this and Tyler's album he's gotta be running away with 6th man of the year in music in 2015. He sounds better than ever, certainly moreso than the years he was messin' around with Ole Piss.
2932052, Charlies's own album has some cuts too
Posted by OldPro, Mon May-18-15 11:37 AM
Wasn't feeling the slower stuff but his mid & uptempo tempo jams were all listenable at the very least and in a few cases great (Things You Do, Just Like Summer Time & Hey Lover) Charlie on a damn good run lately.
2932078, I definitely agree with this. Charlie is definitely shining now.
Posted by Dr Claw, Mon May-18-15 01:20 PM
>Wasn't feeling the slower stuff but his mid & uptempo tempo

>Charlie on a damn good run lately.

I can't quite pinpoint it, but I would say around the time he changed that haircut, LOL. but especially in the last year or so. it's like hearing him in vintage Gap mode with some of these tracks. And definitely agreed on those uptempo tracks.

idk about album of the summmer...thiis album is what i expected it to be more or less. it sounds like one long song that just switches instruments at intervals. i really haven't fully adjusted to snoop yet, and honestly aint really checked for him since rhythm and gangsta(loved it)...okay maybe blue carpet treatment. i understand the direction he's took it too, but it don't seem like Snoop, like he just the figure head of his music, he don't create it. if that makes sense

Posted by Brew, Tue May-26-15 09:50 PM
>like he just the figure head of
>his music, he don't create it. if that makes sense

...is something I was kinda thinking as well. Like, I'm listening to the album and loving it. But feel like it's a Pharrell and Charlie album with Snoop adding in some nice and smooth ad libs. I felt similar listening to this as I did when I was listening to Electric Circus the first couple times. Like....OK, this is interesting...but Common, like Snoop on this, is like a guest on his own album. ?uest, Dilla and the Soulquarians dominated that record like Pharrell and Charlie did on this.

Again I love it. And think Snoop took full advantage of his vocals. Just agree that maybe this should've been billed as a Snoop/Charlie/Pharrell album considering the level of work put in. In other words I'm curious whose vision this truly was.

Speaking of "collectives" whatever happened to QDC?
2933288, Snoop can do whatever he wants...
Posted by legsdiamond, Fri May-29-15 08:45 AM
so if he and P sat down and P said lets go in this direction and Snoop rolled with it how can anyone be mad?

Honestly, when has Pharrell worked with someone and the artist was in the front and P was in the back? Even if P doesn't get on the mic you know when it's Pharrell.

I wouldn't be surprised if Snoop has a few albums left on a contract and he just told P to do what he does...

2933330, I never said I was mad.
Posted by Brew, Fri May-29-15 12:33 PM
Just said I feel like Snoop's a guest on his own album.

Doesn't take away from the quality of it, I'm just always interested in who put what into each album.

not MAD at it

but if pharrell could get in trouble for "blurred lines" then this is just as problematic in the derivative sense
