i dont know if hes recorded any 'purer' jazz in recent years, but i do think most of his solo stuff when working with prince was no doubt cut with the hope that prince fans would be more likely to buy a leeds album that sounded kinda like prince than coltrane, or maceo parker even. he did some decent charlie parker riffs on the SOTT tour... but just cos hes a fusion/soft jazz guy, doesnt mean he doesnt know about jazz. roger corman loved bergman and european arthouse but released exploitation movies.... what someone likes, admires and studies doesnt necessarily = what they make themselves.
