Picks not only dope beats, but unusual ones that don't/won't sound good if another person picked it.
2928471, the game, though he is cornball as a rapper IMO
Posted by mistermaxxx08, Sun Apr-19-15 09:49 PM
but his beat game is tight.

TI got beats as well.

Although not on the level of their Premo production.....

the majority of Group Homes' beat selection
HAS been pretty dope and hardcore since their 1st LP

Posted by mrhood75, Mon Apr-20-15 04:28 PM
If nothing else, in the past I've respected Game's ear for beats, but that "Blood of the Wolf" album was straight basura on the lyrics and beats front.
2928562, a few years ago i would've said game & rawse

now i'd say currensy, nipsey hussle , kendrick, slim thug & freddie gibbs

2928639, Not with the beats he's picked over the years.

Dope lyrics don't make a great album when the beats are severely lacking.

2928650, Read what I said again...

You can't name another MC with more great individual songs over the course of their career than Nas. He has picked some bad beats that didn't work for him but that doesn't discount ALL of the great music he has put out over the past 20+ years.

This "Nas can't pick beats" agenda is an ignorant one.
2928670, This post isn't about MC's with more great individual songs...
Posted by Kim Jong Trill, Tue Apr-21-15 10:23 AM
over the course of their career so your point is mute.

Fuck your fort!
2928679, If he has that many great songs he can't be that bad at picking beats
Posted by Anonymous, Tue Apr-21-15 10:59 AM
So your point is fucking dumb.
2928732, Yes he can when the trash beats heavily outweigh the good ones.
Posted by The Wordsmith, Tue Apr-21-15 02:51 PM
Sorry but Nas' ear is real sometimey. When it's on point, it's really on point. Unfortunately, most of the time it ain't on point and we get hit with horrible and or boring beats.

Since 1976
2928733, *shrug*
Posted by Anonymous, Tue Apr-21-15 03:15 PM
He's picked enough good ones to have more great records than any other MC so therefore he can't be the worst.

Not sure what's hard to understand.
2928707, He makes a lot of songs
Posted by PCProductions, Tue Apr-21-15 01:02 PM
So he'll have a high volume of both hits and misses. The lows are pretty low, though, and not short in volume, either. Nas is down there with the worst of rappers' ears for beats, though, which has no bearing on his obviously all-time-great level lyrical ability.

But I think the most salient point to make for this argument is Ether's beat. I mean, he knew how big and important that song would be, and he could not have picked a worse beat. I still find myself shaking my head at that choice to this day.

Love me some Nas, though, don't get me wrong. But man he's picked some stinkers in his day.
2928722, I put Nas at half & half
Posted by fluicide, Tue Apr-21-15 01:52 PM
One ear's good the other one's bad
2928568, Best: Snoop, Rick Ross, Ghost
Posted by chincheckin, Mon Apr-20-15 01:16 PM
Worst: Nas
2928578, One of the worst has to be the Gza.
Posted by Numba_33, Mon Apr-20-15 01:53 PM
Outside of Liquid Swords and that Grandmasters project with DJ Muggs, the beats for his albums have been a snooze fest.

I hope his future projects prove me wrong.

Interesting that as soon as I was done reading this another Wu member of Ghost flashed immediately in my head. Strange to see that gulf between two crew members.
2928585, I hate beats like this

2928640, Lol, right? The same type of generic beats....
Posted by The Wordsmith, Tue Apr-21-15 02:10 AM
...that Canibus has a knack for picking as well. I don't understand it. You'd think those two had never heard of any of the ill beats from the early to mid '90s that had flavor to them when you hear them rhyming over plain sounding joints like that.

Since 1976
2928648, Assembly line basic cookie cutter beats
Posted by fluicide, Tue Apr-21-15 04:28 AM
That's why I hated Wyclef's production on Can-I-Bus

Trackmasters were the kings of this...and post Biggie Bad Boy has a bunch of em

It's hard to put into words but you know exactly what I mean...beats like Eminem's productions (Say Goodbye To Hollywood comes to mind)
2928729, I know exactly what you're talking about.
Posted by The Wordsmith, Tue Apr-21-15 02:24 PM
Those boring flavorless beats that have no distinctive qualities to make them stand out. They are just there. Even wack beats have something about them that makes them stand out; even if what makes them stand out is terrible. Those generic beats drain me for some reason. I'd rather listen to pop radio because at least the wackness on there is a lot more tolerable.

If beats were food, the dope stuff would be the scrumptious, well seasoned meals; the wack stuff would be the stuff that's too salty, over seasoned, or overcooked; and the generic stuff would be the foods that have the potential to be good if they had the right seasonings added but since they don't, they're just bland. They're like a plain bowl of rice or grits.

You hear a lot of bedroom producers on YouTube with that generic style.

'This rapper had a better career than his skills suggested' post?
2928647, Not really...more like - what does it mean when a good mc
Posted by fluicide, Tue Apr-21-15 04:13 AM
like GZA repeatedly picks unfunky, dry beats and a wack mc like (insert wack rapper name)always has heatrock beats? Is it because GZA has bad taste? Or is it us? Are we the problem? Or something like that...

WHY THO?

Is a song good if it has a wack mc, but the beat is slammin?
Is a song bad if it has a dope mc but the beat sucks?

Nah seriously, it's about whose beats are consistent iyo and whose aren't.
2928630, Eminem = wurst ear for beats.

Since 1976
2928677, Most lyrical rappers like Ras, Chino, Em, pick stage beats vs show beats
Posted by -DJ R-Tistic-, Tue Apr-21-15 10:53 AM
They always pick beats to where their lyrics and style can really get off, just setting a stage, vs beats that seem to take ANY shine away from what they do. And it's not always that intentional...just that they don't seem to know how to make a great song lyrically with a great beat in the way that Jay and Biggie did.
2928716, Ah good point
Posted by fluicide, Tue Apr-21-15 01:38 PM
What may rock in the headphones might not translate the same in a huge room/live show setting..and a song/beat that may be underwhelming on an album might rock in a loud/live setting
