Can Lenny Kravitz and Van Hunt prove to a modern audience that black musicians can rock more than a mic? The Music Snobs dissect and desegregate a genre as they examine Rock in 2015. And in a round table that will excite your inner audiophile, the crew asks: Which format is the all-time champ when it comes to listening to music? https://soundcloud.com/themusicsnobs/episode-034
2918165, It was a-ight - it reflected that Black Rock is far away from

being considered "cool" and that Black Rock needs a real big landmark album to impact the new generation.

Too many assumptions in here.. as there other podcasts. It's pretty easy to find some of these answers.. no need to ponder
2918198, contemporary rock is boring as fuck regardless
Posted by cgonz00cc, Mon Jan-26-15 04:52 PM
And i cant think of a more milquetoast "rock star" than lenny fuckin kravitz

Daughtry

Nickelback

Foo Fighters

Pearl Jam

I guess you were too bored by contemporary rock to remember these guys.
2918203, comparing foo fighters and pearl jam to lenny kravitz? lol
Posted by cgonz00cc, Mon Jan-26-15 05:34 PM
And daughtry aint fuckin rock star
2918204, I guess Foo Fighters and Pearl Jam were more cutting edge than I
Posted by c71, Mon Jan-26-15 05:36 PM
thought.

Whoa
2918205, better and more interesting, at the very least
Posted by cgonz00cc, Mon Jan-26-15 05:40 PM
2918207, uh...............uh.............
Posted by c71, Mon Jan-26-15 05:42 PM
ah..........hmmmm.....

I don't think the word "interesting" is applied to the Foo Fighters and Pearl Jam very much.

but..

Lenny must be extra wack to you, it seems, for such a raise in status for those two bands.
2918210, LOL @ using interesting in the same sentence as those bands...
Posted by Jakob Hellberg, Mon Jan-26-15 05:50 PM
I used to diss Lenny too but he has become a sort of default target for being retro and derivative when there are numerous other acts who get more props that are just as bad and frequently worse songwriters and who pay less attention to arrangements and musical detail. Oh well...
2918275, the Foo Fighters have an album better than Lenny's career
Posted by cgonz00cc, Tue Jan-27-15 11:17 AM
And i find Dave Grohl infinitely more interesting than Lenny Kravitz in just about any aspect

Nah it's not that...It was just a very flawed analogy...
2918209, Nah, same shit...

You could argue-and be absolutely correct-that Pearl Jam and Foo Fighters sound more "modern rock" than Lenny even if the former sounds like "modern rock" played by a band raised on "classic rock" and lttle else and the latter essentially 80's-early 90's college-rock/radio-alternative but in terms of being milquetoast? I might even argue that Lenny is more edgy-or at least stylish and "rockstar"-than those two...
2918245, the other day I was listening to the hives and thought about you.
Posted by Joe Corn Mo, Tue Jan-27-15 12:41 AM
I think they rock hard as shit,
But I wondered if a rock head would view that
the way I would view somebody that the Commodores were exceptionally funky.

So the new thing is to completely shit on the Foo Fighters and compare them to Daugherty because they are one of the last commercially viable rock bands?...And Pearl Jam fits into that bag, too?

Okay...player...
2918436, I think you need to read the definition of the word "completely"
Posted by c71, Wed Jan-28-15 12:27 PM
I never said that the Foo's and Pearl Jam were "completely" anything.

I was signifying the vibe/style/image of those two bands is bland - esp. compared to Lenny. That is why I brought the Foo's and Pearl Jam up to respond to the reply that Lenny is supposedly "milquetoast".

Just because Daughtry is more "milquetoast" and boring than the Foo's and Pearl Jam doesn't mean Lenny still isn't more "Rock-starrish" than both the Foo's and Pearl Jam by a long shot.

Do Pearl Jam and the Foo fighters have talent? yes. They've made good music sometimes.

All bands have flaws, and the flaw of the Foo's and Pearl Jam are the vibe is kind of dull and boring, but they have musical skill.

So chill with "completely" accusations.
2918202, The cassette tape convo had me reminiscing.

I listened to the radio for like, 10 hours straight one summer day, waiting for a song to record.

I was shocked that during the roundtable on best music formats no one mentioned the biggest downside of digital music; the way it's devalued music and has made it almost disposable to a generation folks. That's had a huge (and most would say negative) impact on music.
2918304, Ain't listened yet....but my thoughts on Lenny and Van Hunt
Posted by DVS, Tue Jan-27-15 02:11 PM
to hear Lenny Kravitz described as Milquetoast is an insult to both Milque and Toast.

Bad Brains was a visionary rock outfit.
Fishbone was a visionary rock outfit.

Lenny Kravitz has never done anything groundbreaking or mind numbing....he is a fringe player on the rock scene at best....

Even w/o a 'BLACK ROCK' contingent....the aforementioned groups were able to thrive in their demographic because they brought the goods.

Van Hunt suffers from a combined Boring/Cornball disease and its not terminal, but its close. If you really dig his music, you are a huge fan...but if you fall outside of that...you short.
2918314, Lenny is talented. Just by bringing up how good Fishbone and Bad Brains
Posted by c71, Tue Jan-27-15 02:45 PM
are doesn't diminish Lenny.

Lenny made great songs:

Believe
Are you gonna go my way?
I built this garden for us
can't seem to get you off my mind

He has rocked tours and shows for a long time.

"mind numbing"..... what a litmus test that is . Lenny did his thing for a long time and even Dr. Know of the Bad Brains gave Lenny credit for that in the Greg Tate Vibe article on Lenny many years ago.

I know going extra is the Lesson thing, but you are straining credibility with that mess.
