that dude is pretty much responsible for beginning my love affair with hip hop music.
2913884, this probably holds true for a lot of people our age...

(because GMF & F5 had broken up, in addition to that heavy handed band instrumentation of Sugar Hill records was limiting Hip Hop's full expressive potential, and some say even corny), "Larry Lar" Smith came to the rescue.

He saved Hip Hop music. Not single handedly but he helped to save it nonetheless.
2913599, 🙏 RIP to a legend/pioneer

Between Whodini & Run DMC he basically produced the soundtrack of my early life as it relates to Hip Hop.

EASILY one of the GOAT Hip-Hop producers to me; the sound he had in that era may sound dated to the crate-digger crew looking for "dusty" fusion- and prog-loops but if you are old enough to remember how fucking RAD (LOL!) Run DMC and Whodini etc. sounded in the context of the time, you know. And I for one still think the best shit holds up just as well as any later, more "sophisticated" or (insert buzzword) Hip-Hop...
2914930, Sounded in the context of the time? Hell, his joints STILL Slam!!!

The one thing too that I don't think gets mentioned or at least emphasized is his music fluency. He went from a strong hard rock driven sounds with a great emphasis on electric guitar with RunDMC, to a very deep R&B/soul stirring sound with a greater emphasis on bass with Whodini.

Who else in Hip Hop has been able to flip the script between sounds like this within the genre and be just as great with one as he is with the other?
2913806, created the first 'original' sound of hip-hop music.... RIP

The man's production is the soundtrack of my youth.
2914925, RIP to Hip Hop's 1st Great Producer. This is Truly Tragic.

How this man passed, is a travesty. There is no way that this man should've been allowed to go out like this. Russell and Run with all of their millions. The number of other producers and other artists who grew up, inspired by his work which served as a launching pad for their own creativity and opening up the possibility of how vast Hip Hop music expression could be.

Shame, shame, shame...
