Its gonna be so jheri curly in the right way. And yeah..it would be cool if any of the songs accidentally became a hit. I'm still all up on Get You Home, but Do It or something else from the album is fine by me too.

But it might be one that grows on me since it's a take on Ain't No Fun.
And I love Ain't No Fun... but the lyrics are abhorrent. You can't sing that shit around the kinds of women I be around. So something that jacks the melody with different lyrics might be kinda cool.
2917318, yea there's a certain appeal to using Ain't No Fun

*raises hand*

It isn't shocking. There aren't crazy turns or twists. It is about as I expected. This is good of course. Mayer does no wrong to me, but I don't know where I could go to out and hear any of this. Maybe Uptown Funk gave this thing some kind of 'lane' to roll in and be lightweight successful. Here's hoping. Add these to the catalog.

Are they getting points for practing a form that has gone out of favor or can they hang with the folks from back in the day?

Or even Jordan vs Jason Richardson or something.

They have a great amount of talent, and the album cuts show a good B, B+ level musicianship to me. Since they didn't create the sound they use, they surely aren't going to get credit as being as innovative as a Loose Ends, Slave, Nile Rodgers, or anyone from the era they're reaching from. But I really can't judge them 100% until I see them live...I don't even know who the musicians are on this project. I wouldn't even be shocked if they used a few who were active in the 80's.

That mix is damn near as jamming as the album. I'm having a good time with both. Mayer basically does no wrong to me tho so don't sweat it.

Posted by Hitokiri, Sat Feb-21-15 01:47 PM
I'm upset we're not talking about this album more. I haven't stopped listening to it since the day of the leak. Every few days I have a new favorite song. Started with "I Got U," then moved to "The Right Time," and now I'm on to "Roll Along." That stretch is too damn dope. I quickly fell into singing along with "Number One" even though I was hesitant about that cut when he first dropped it.

Yeah this is my favorite album of the early part of the year. But man, the rotation right now between this, Lupe, Joey, and D... fire.

Posted by Hitokiri, Mon Feb-23-15 11:21 PM
aside from when I'm by myself.
I played it with 3 friends while we were sitting around drinking on a Friday night before we went out.
Played it driving around with my girl.
Played it driving around with my homie.
Played a track on the radio show I co-host (we've also been playing the ep since it came out).

Every single time, people have demonstrated that they cannot resist grooving to this shit. It's so fucking good.

i sent this and jaded to my pops recently
(i turned him on to mayer around the second album i think)
and somehow, he told me he liked jaded more
i was like huh, what?
I've got a sneaking suspicion he's telling me that just to seem hipper, because jaded is way outside his wheelhouse, esp, compared to Tux.
2921574, But....how?
Posted by phemom, Tue Feb-24-15 09:55 PM
Tux grooves way better than Jaded Inc.
2921575, if hes not trolling me
Posted by fontgangsta, Tue Feb-24-15 09:59 PM
as i hypothesized above, he might just be going off the strength of the "I Ran" cover (i included it as a bonus track)
but i cant call it.
2921715, two things
Posted by astralblak, Wed Feb-25-15 08:17 PM
One, its a good album I can't get into right now cause I'm hurt in post-breakup mode

Two, all the folks raving about this, great, but if y'all the same enwurds critiquing D for "throwback" shit, you better lob that towards Jake and Mayer. This 80s funk and boogie with 2015 gear/tech veneer. It is. Don't critique one cause its 70s and not the other cause its 80s.

By the way as a critique for D and Tuxedo throwback is weak as shit.

Enjoy good / great music

2921734, D as in D'Angelo? If so...90% of OKP LOVES it to death

2921735, ya thats what i was thinking
Posted by fontgangsta, Thu Feb-26-15 01:53 AM
D and Tux are both very referential to me, but in the best way
now some shit like Mark Ronson's new joint - thats not referential, thats just straight up derivative - big difference
but D and Mayer have both been extremely referential artists throughout their whole careers, not just these latest albums
2921776, yup. you stated it better than me
Posted by astralblak, Thu Feb-26-15 01:38 PM
but i see same heads in the D post, being loud and wrong about it being derivative, in here wetting their panties
2921779, OT: Referential vs. Derivative
Posted by Hitokiri, Thu Feb-26-15 02:03 PM
Where do you (personally) draw the line between the two?
I haven't listened to Ronson's new project, I'm not really interested in it but since you called him out by name -- was Back to Black referential or derivative to you?

What about MH's earlier work like Strange Arrangement?
2921873, Eh, it's like the supreme court's definition of obscenity
Posted by fontgangsta, Thu Feb-26-15 10:34 PM
I know it when I see it
But no, I don't consider BTB or SA to be derivative
Basically those albums are clearly influenced by a certain sound, but the artist is still shining thru, being true to themselves, bringing a fresh flavor to it - still sounds original
The ronson/Bruno shit just sounds like a straight rip off tho IMO. There's nothing original in it.
2921899, Makes perfect sense.
Posted by Hitokiri, Fri Feb-27-15 10:54 AM
I was contributing some of the derivative-ness of Bruno/Ronson to the fact that I'm not a fan. So I don't listen to him, or hear "his sound."

But your explanation makes complete sense and I agree with you dropped.

2922649, What I love about this album...

I like that every song on here stays in boogie/I love you girl mode throughout the entire record.

There's no song that throws the tempo off or a sad song on the end of it...you can play it straight thru and never get your mood changed.

This doesn't happen often enough. Not all albums need variety.

I'm gonna grab this off the strength of all the love it's getting, but I have a question for you guys...

I was a big fan of A Strange Arrangement. I was on that as soon as it came out and played the hell out of it. Then when he dropped How Do You Do, I was extremely underwhelmed. A few decent songs, but mostly I felt like it just had no punch to it.

So I never grabbed his 3rd album, Where Does This Door Go? Did anybody here who was similarly let down by HDYD really enjoy WDTDG? Should I check it out?

Early contender for Album of the Year, for sure. Top 5 for sure.

I'm lounging around the house on Sunday afternoon and doing some chores and having this on the the background makes me wanna put on a suit and go to the club, like, RIGHT NOW.

2922817, I did so much work in the house listening to this...

to low profile projects like this makes me mad as fuck...dude should've blown up after WDTDG?.. that record was pure excellence
2922857, the music from that era (early 80's) was done to completion

Looks like they just announced some new tour dates: http://tuxedofunk.com/

Judging by this video they just posted, I think these are going to be with a full band: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kJmIi8psOXw
