you know what they say about first impressions, you only get to make them once.

i'll be actively avoiding this guys music for the rest of my life.
2908695, What's the problem with any of those songs?
Posted by Stevie Lee, Sat Nov-08-14 10:13 AM
besides the scooby doo one. ugh.
2908697, are any of them on your iPod?

So you're willfully checking out on good music because you think he once made bad music? You're entitled, but I think that's a dumb way to approach things. Dude has been an integral part of four of the best hip hop albums of the last five years and I'd still own them even if he was a former member of Right Said Fred.
2908704, i can't drum up the interest to even stream their music, let alone dl.
Posted by banco_popular, Sat Nov-08-14 10:43 AM
it's just interesting how first impressions can sour people to your music.

or conversely, get you an unlimited amount of "get out of jail free" cards.

i mean, look at nas' career.
2908713, Yet you'll devote time to posting about their music?
Posted by TomWaitsInOkkervil, Sat Nov-08-14 12:09 PM
If you don't want to listen, don't listen, but what's the motivation to tell everyone that you're NOT listening to something?
2908715, what's the motivation to post anything?
Posted by banco_popular, Sat Nov-08-14 12:24 PM
to initiate a conversation.

in this case, killer mike's past indiscretions and as stated in reply 6: the bigger issue of first impressions marring your future output.

these issues are mildly interesting to me, so i posted them.

thanks for contributing.
2908706, troll

2908709, is "troll" the modern equivalent of "player hater" now?
Posted by banco_popular, Sat Nov-08-14 11:06 AM
it's an interesting tactic to suppress dissent.

of course, an internet "troll" is someone who posts things they may or may not believe in an attempt to conjure humor/shock/outrage, i.e. attention.

for example: desus was the quintessential "troll" poster of okayplayer.

in my opinion, espousing and articulating a genuine opinion intelligently (perhaps an unfavorable one) is not "trolling".
2908714, way to troll being called a troll & lol @ the desus deflection

have a nice weekend.
2909191, calling your ridiculous post 'dissent' is giving it too much weight.
Posted by shockzilla, Thu Nov-13-14 08:12 AM
your post is just silly prejudice.

you don't want to listen to RAP music or the two RTJ albums?

your loss, dickhead.

this post is just another one in the endless stream of pompous offbase bullshit that comprises your entire okp presence.
2909383, there's really no need for name-calling.

Can't front on the Whole World either. I love his verse on Poppin Tags - I'm obviously happy that he's evolved as a rapper and human but I do miss his old persona

The other tracks I can take or leave but if you're missing out on some of the better hip-hop music of the last few years that's on you. There's plenty of music people could potentially miss out on b/c of a poor first impression

Posted by TR808, Mon Nov-10-14 03:50 PM
I can even excuse Marvin for Sexual healing

I can excuse Mr. Biggs for being Mr. Biggs.

Because they all made great music in their careers...

a few misteps here and there are not going to make me throw away they whole catalog.

I can even excuse Jay Z for "Sunshine" and the Video as well..

i unfortunately don't view the guy from "the whole world" in the same league as stevie wonder, marvie gaye, ron isley, or even jay-z.
2909513, stevie's first hit was a silly novelty record.

2909150, He won't respond to this
Posted by ChiefRocka, Wed Nov-12-14 06:26 PM
Because it doesn't fit into the narrative he's already created in his head where Killer Mike is some kind of joke rapper because he made a few lighthearted songs with Outkast, titans of Southern hip-hop. God forbid a guy jump on a track with his idols, knowing full well it would be on the Scooby Doo soundtrack? lol. Definitely a legit reason to dismiss his entire output.

And for the record, there's not a damn thing wrong with any of the songs you posted, OP. Are they fucking pantheon classics of hip-hop? No. But they're not abominations either.
2909384, thanks for responding.

2909031, I, for one, like all of these songs.
Posted by PolarbearToenails, Tue Nov-11-14 02:53 PM

2909056, all those songs bang though.

2909382, are you comparing the album with el-p to enter the 36 chambers?
Posted by banco_popular, Fri Nov-14-14 09:46 PM
does killer mike have a fleet of 7 other brand new, all-star rappers backing him?
2909768, No, Just Applying Your Flawed Logic That An Artist
Posted by EClecticTastes, Tue Nov-18-14 04:40 PM
Who made something wack in the past is precluded from making something worthwhile. I mean, RZA is credited as the driving force behind Wu-Tang.
2909997, are they making music on par with wu/enter the 36 or not?
Posted by lookatwrist, Thu Nov-20-14 03:56 PM
if not, you're just making a false equivalency.
2909998, The albums with El and Mike are as close to
Posted by dalecooper, Thu Nov-20-14 03:59 PM
36 Chambers as you're gonna get nowadays.
2910001, how close are they to the albums that were close to 36 chambers then?
Posted by lookatwrist, Thu Nov-20-14 04:09 PM
because i mean, i can still listen to those right?
2910011, I'm Not Making an Equivalency, False or Otherwise
Posted by EClecticTastes, Thu Nov-20-14 05:00 PM
See, you're attempting to make this about whether Run The Jewels is on par with 36 Chambers (or any other Wu project folks hold dear). That's not the point. This is actually about your original comment that you cannot listen to anything by Killer Mike based on your first impressions of him.

So, if you thought "Oh We Love You Rakeem" was wack, then you likely would not have given anything he did after that the time of day. Likewise with Jay-Z because of Hawaiian Sophie. Or, Bob Marley if you didn't dig ska. Or, Parliament if you weren't into doo wop. Did you think the Fugees first album was subpar? If so, no The Score for you.

Or, you can just let it be known that you just don't like an artist. Or, you can actually allow an artist to grow. Or (god forbid) actually let them express themselves in different ways on different projects.

…Personally did not really feel Killer Mike's ish before, but can't deny how he evolved as a MC…brother comes correct over EL's ish…Love the fact that he goes in on dudes on the sly too….like Jay/Kanye and Cannibal Ox. Brave enough to call names, somewhat of a lost aspect in Hip Hop…refreshing….

2909653, RE: Ehh, that's a stretch..
Posted by spidey, Mon Nov-17-14 03:15 PM
...Mike is just showing he got EL's back, and don't think it's a stretch at all...It wasn't all that long ago that cornball vast aire was still trying to come at EL-P...
2909788, lol....vast is a corn ball?
Posted by howardlloyd, Tue Nov-18-14 09:16 PM
el-p best record is still cold vein

and vast raps laps around el

2909866, Yes...
Posted by spidey, Wed Nov-19-14 01:14 PM
And I love the Cannibal Ox joint....without EL though, Vast/Ox is nothing...they had released some project that was pretty weak, and Vast tried to come at EL from various angles. Anyway, we all see the greatness EL is turning out, and nothing of quality from Vast, who was basically a one trick pony...as far as lyrics, I disagree completely, will take EL all day over Vast....
2909691, I always took that like he was the cannibal
Posted by quikfit, Mon Nov-17-14 08:33 PM
As in just a nasty rhyme & he just eats up rappers.
Never crossed my mind but I guess not that far fetched.
2909443, lol, only two of those are solo Killer Mike songs though?
Posted by Ketchums, Sat Nov-15-14 05:40 PM
I mean whatever. It's your loss if you're actively avoiding albums that are so incredible and that are so critically acclaimed at this point. RAP Music, RTJ and RTJ 2 were each strong candidates for the best albums from those years - and despite your first impressions (which again, only two of those are solo Killer Mike songs), I'd think that if you're a music fan that you should at least give them a listen to see what the fuss is about.

I know how first impressions can be, but if I see a lot of acclaim - especially from people whose opinions I trust to a certain extent - I'll give the new material a chance, or even give the old material a spin with fresh ears. Audio Push had given me a terrible impression early on, but one of my homies told me that their album Come As You Are was one of the best albums of that year. I gave it a spin, and they sounded like completely new artists. Some artists are able to grow/reinvent themselves - hell, that's often how the best artists manage to stay around for a while.
2909481, dude is decidedly not a music fan.
