It's heartwarming.
2907585, well, Premier has produced a number of his songs...

2907597, and he was on the last Gang Starr album with a killer verse nm

So true. Jay-Z listens to everything. A lot of rappers DO study their craft and music. You'd never know......but yeah. This was a good watch. I remember the episode when Rza was on and Snoop was talking about how he and his boys were listening to Wu even during that whole East Coast/West Coast divide.
2907672, i went through all the episodes on youtube, didnt see a RZA one

2907570, Y'all would be shocked at the music most Rappers love
Posted by -DJ R-Tistic-, Wed Oct-29-14 04:54 AM
It's where underground rappers have fans who literally hate ANYTHING commercial...but a lot of them actually love commercial artists. I remember Talib and his wife telling me that he was a for real Gucci Mane fan, which is why they worked together.

Cats like Lil Jon, Tyga and Lil Wayne have taste that goes way beyond what most fans would think, as well.
2907584, I automatically assume that most 'commercial' rappers
Posted by Dr Claw, Wed Oct-29-14 06:50 AM
are backpackers (either closeted or all-the-way out)

esp. ones of a certain age like Snoop. The dude covered a hip-hop classic on his first solo album. all those dudes came up on was "classic hip hop", lol
2907603, I seen an old freestyle where Rick Ross
Posted by SP1200, Wed Oct-29-14 08:56 AM
literally had a backpack on lol.
2907588, I don't remember which underground MC it was...
Posted by Brew, Wed Oct-29-14 07:32 AM
but I remember years back reading an interview with some backpack rapper. And he told a story about how he doesn't understand fans' interpretation of his music and opinions on popular music, as one fan had recently stepped to him and was like "yo I love your music....and I hate JayZ too!" and this rapper was basically like "what the hell are you talking about I love JayZ....."
2907688, sounds like something el-p might have said.

He said some kid at a show tried to bond with him on some underground shit and said "yeah man, fuck Jay-Z."
Thought said "What's wrong with Jay-Z? He's a cool guy"

This just goes back to fans who like to segregate the different types of hip hop and sit up in their bedroom thinking that their favorite rapper feels the same.

And it happens on both levels, commercial and underground.

I find it hard for anyone to spend their life working on music and not have delved outside of their immediate peer group.

i gotta start watching more GGN. i always forget how entertaining Snoop is.
2907602, Yea GGN is great.
Posted by Brew, Wed Oct-29-14 08:51 AM
I've seen like 5-6 episodes. Snoop is so interesting and funny.
2907600, I didnt KNOW Snoop Dogg was a hardcore hip hop head

2907620, There is an episode of Juan Ep when pete
Posted by TR808, Wed Oct-29-14 10:08 AM
says he ran into andre 3000. pete had on a MF Doom shirt with just the mask and Andre says "I like your shirt" and as he walked away he says "peachfuzz"....

Basically code for

"yeah I know my underground hip hop"

I hope run the jewels is fuel for another Watch the Throne Album

2907639, What if I told you Jeezy's inspiration for TM 1o1 was Jeru the Damaja?
Posted by Garhart Poppwell, Wed Oct-29-14 12:26 PM
Would you believe that?
2907678, I would
Posted by Dr Claw, Wed Oct-29-14 06:50 PM
considering his age, and his pre-"trap rap" history
but that's just me

I lived in the South in the '90s
and cats were HEEEEEEEEEEEEEAVY on the "real hip-hop"
heavy.

I almost wondered if it was just my time/area. One of my dudes (he posts here) was on the same shit. The one rap record that came from our area in that time was kind of like some 99th generation East Coast rap.
2907836, I think I remember him saying he was a Mos Def head too
Posted by Garhart Poppwell, Thu Oct-30-14 10:08 PM
But that was before Mos was the go-to guy to name to prove you were diverse, so I'd tend to believe him.
2907799, nope
Posted by EAS, Thu Oct-30-14 04:29 PM
Really? Did he mention it in an interview somewhere?
2907835, I think it was XXL
Posted by Garhart Poppwell, Thu Oct-30-14 10:06 PM
He said that he wanted 1o1 to feel like Atlanta the same way The Sun Rises in the East feels like Brooklyn
2907842, !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

>He said that he wanted 1o1 to feel like Atlanta the same way

I'm surprised Jeezy even heard about Jeru.
2907846, He's a closet backpacker, if you like that term
Posted by Garhart Poppwell, Fri Oct-31-14 06:08 AM
Talk to him about Hip Hop long enough and it'll come out, from what I gather.
2907926, Man this made me go back to Sun Rises
Posted by PCProductions, Fri Oct-31-14 01:46 PM
God that album is so good dude. Every song is just pure, unfiltered sewer water.
2907682, Snoop is a hip hop head through and through. I remember
Posted by Mignight Maruder, Wed Oct-29-14 07:30 PM
watching some MTV special on Snoop's top 25-50 videos of all time. The majority of Snoop's favorite videos were from BDP/KrsOne, Doug E Fresh, Slick Rick, Big Daddy Kane, Rakim, etc. I mean, the Slick Rick influence should be extremely obvious.

Also, its seems like a 'only on okayplayer' type of deal that Gangstarr is considered backpack rap.
2907696, I'll say it again - Premier's memory is fucking lethal.
Posted by third_i_vision, Wed Oct-29-14 09:56 PM
His scratch-hooks are never accidentally dope. He remembers absolutely everything.

Great storyteller too. This was dope.
2907741, This response makes me want to check for this
Posted by Numba_33, Thu Oct-30-14 11:06 AM
despite the fact I don't want to watch this podcast because I'm not a stoner and from some clips of other Snoop podcast vids, they have a stoner vibe to them. I'll dedicate sometime this weekend and check this out.
2907719, Well aren't all old heads like that?
Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Thu Oct-30-14 08:54 AM
Like if you are 35+ and have been listening to hip-hop almost all your life, then your knowledge would be deep right?

Like I don't consider myself as deep in hip-hop like some lesson heads but I know all the stuff Snoop is referencing.

Posted by Bombastic, Fri Oct-31-14 01:20 PM
oh wait, I forgot Too Short isn't 'hard core hip-hop head' music and Snoop fucking Dogg one of the longest tenured and iconic MC's in the history of the genre couldn't know what Come Clean sounds like.
2907931, covered ??? more like bastardized
Posted by My_SP1200_Broken_Again, Fri Oct-31-14 02:11 PM
...i kinda like snoop too, but those covers are hard on the ears

2907975, Lodi Dodi's dope in it's own way, Vapors wasn't good tho
Posted by Bombastic, Fri Oct-31-14 08:45 PM
needs that horn loop from the video.

And truth be told I can't stand the OG Cinderfella at this point anyway.

*ducks*

Snoop is better versed in not just hip-hop but soul, funk, rock, jazz, r&b, etc than your favorite rapper.

I loved the part where Snoop talks about wanting to train with KRS.
2908067, Snoop is just a huge music fan in general
Posted by gumz, Sun Nov-02-14 07:34 AM
you ever heard him talk about soul music? He can name you artists, where they're from, obscure songs of theirs...etc. he's a true fan of music...hiphop especially. This shouldn't be a surprise to anyone.
2908077, I think people tend to think they're favorite artists think the way they do
Posted by Garhart Poppwell, Sun Nov-02-14 12:03 PM
about other artists, especially when it comes to those that don't play the game. Funny thing is that it usually isn't the case
