2906714, D'Angelo TMZ Sighting: Chow Does It Feel?
Posted by JtothaI, Fri Oct-24-14 08:39 AM
Their words, not mine. Damn.

At least he's out there touring, while he pulls the DETOX on us all.

http://www.tmz.com/2014/10/23/dangelo-overweight-melbourne-australia-soulfest-video/

D'Angelo is in the middle of his first-ever Australian tour, and from the looks of it ... there's way more of R&B's former #1 sex symbol for fans Down Under to love.

The "Untitled (How Does it Feel)" singer was performing at Soulfest in Melbourne last weekend ... and he's no longer flaunting the buff physique he had years ago. Still sounds good though.

The ex-neo soul brother #1 has had huge swings in poundage over the years.

It's an up year.
2906724, looks like he's dropped some of the weight...

hey..touring is gonna shed pounds.
2906730, man, tabloids are staffed by really disgusting people.

no idea how any of them sleep at night.
2906951, while generally I agree, if I crafted this headline I'd sleep as if

I ran a marathon earlier that day then had a huge plate of ribs for dinner that I washed down with a few beers.
2906732, sounds good though

I was at least prepared to see some footage of him out and about, captured by paparazzi. These fools got footage of him performing on stage and called him out for having gained weight since his mid-20s.
2906770, 'Chow does it feel' is hilarious.

CHITLINS-HAM-ROLLS-ANDBUTTER!!!!
2906803, a lotta women in the crowds were crackin similar jokes
Posted by araQual, Fri Oct-24-14 02:07 AM
which on here, i might chuckle at (if they're creative and actually funny). but AT the concert? listening to bitches pussies dry up cos D' is chunkier and verbalising their disappointment AT THE FUCKING SHOWS? annoyed me way more than i thought it would. i told some of em off too lol. like shit, it's not news that he's stacked on the weight. for all we know he did that shit on purpose to stop people from talking about his damn body and perhaps listen to the music again.

well. guess that failed miserably lol. looks like the poor guy is gonna cop it either way. besides, i feel like the chunkier he is, the stronger his voice might get. cos he was sounding fucking unreal at the Melbourne gigs. like, better than he sounds on CD.

also, fuck this tabloidy soulless unnecessarily snarky bitchmade POV already. ppl gotta start drawing a line with this kinda behaviour at some point cos it really is one of the lowest kinds of shit u can express as a human being. anyone going on and on or going OVERboard with the weight jokes wasn't really a fan of the music to begin with, just a materialistic 'i-like-him-because-ABS" dickhead.

V.
2906819, I think that's why he retreated in the first place

and I don't blame him. If -that- video doesn't happen, he probably doesn't disappear
2906821, This 2012 article more or less confirms it.

And I don't blame him either. I respect someone who wanted nothing more than to be respected for his ARTISTRY and not the sex appeal. Seems like a lot of our favorites from that era (D, Lauryn, Erykah (albeit to a lesser extent), Chappelle, etc.) from various forms of art struggled with this balance...for different reasons of course but, same type of story. They felt their art was being compromised.
2906822, I'm sorry to have to be the broken record here (yet again)

But that story never adds up for me.

If he was so freaked out about the fact that chicks were digging his body (attention which, by the way, HE deliberately courted) what stopped him from:

i. making videos where he wasn't naked
ii. releasing more music without videos
iii. releasing videos in which he didn't appear

etc?

If you wanted to be respected for your ARTISTRY then the logical course of action is to actually present your ART
2906826, Fair points.
Posted by Brew, Fri Oct-24-14 09:02 AM
I guess he certainly brought a lot of it upon himself. But that's not uncommon for young people, many of our problems in our youth stem from our own decisions at the time. So I guess I just sympathize with his post-Untitled regrets more than you do, cause we've all been there.

Your last point, though, is a good one. If you want to be respected for your art, then present it and present it in a better way than you did before. Learn from your mistakes.

Maybe he's weak minded, who knows. Low self esteem. It's pretty evident, actually. Of course I wish, just like we all do, that he had kept making music. But again, like I said, I guess I can just kinda understand and recognize how something can frustrate you endlessly. Then again, it shouldn't take 14 years (and counting) for anyone to move past that.
2906827, base.
Posted by shockzilla, Fri Oct-24-14 09:03 AM
i think the problem was the image that he helped to create, that he was the second coming of marvin gaye crossed with prince before he fell off

and then things like quest saying d could play guitar like frank freakin' zappa, a guy who made hendrix's jaw drop to the floor.

and he just couldn't begin to live up to all of that.

it's just too bad he didn't release the follow up to voodoo straight away.
2906829, This is part of the problem, for sure.
Posted by Brew, Fri Oct-24-14 09:05 AM
>it's just too bad he didn't release the follow up to voodoo
>straight away.

The longer you take, the more natural expectations build up and like you said, it becomes impossible to live up to. Dre's dealing with it. D. Many others.

That said, though, you also don't want to rush out an inferior product just to keep the momentum going. So it's a double edged sword.

Posted by rdhull, Fri Oct-24-14 09:51 AM
...sensitivity..seems way extreme and ridiculous at this point

putting everything on "Im fat" and "they wont see the art in it all"?

the fuck?

looks like all the Morpheus prophesying of Dangelo being "the one" etc etc backed him into a corner where on something of supposed greatness can be released, even if it takes 20 years

but nobody (the audience) is trippin on that but him and his handlers(Leeds etc too)

this vanity issue as being a main reason for this deplorable work ethic is all smokescreened bullshit..or even more vanity that his material deserves this ridiculous wait

2906953, i said somethin similar at the shows, too
Posted by araQual, Fri Oct-24-14 08:19 PM
unless sumone put a gun to his head to strip down to nothing but his Lego legs, he kinda brought it on himself. i mean from a marketing perspective, it worked a treat. and it certainly flipped the script a tad in terms of male exposure in music vids as opposed to just females getting naked. but in the end...why did the "Untitled" vid even happen the way it did? why would someone so sensitive about his image go that route and then recoil from the reaction he expected to get?

im pretty sure the true narrative for why he disappeared and got shitscared from performing or releasing new material is deeper than that, but for all we know (and can see) his body image at LEAST played a part in that. i've been tryin to straddle the borders of this opinion for years, but i draw the shit-talking like when it comes to the concerts and gigs. the onus is then on US when 'fans' can't get over the weight-gain and talk shit about it through the whole damn show lol. that's extreme.
and tbh, when i was AT two D' gigs in the space of 3 days? i didn't give two shits about his weight, his absence, or any of the other shit we've talked smack about here for the last decade. it goes out the window when i can confirm he's alive, in front of me, singin his ass off. so what if he looks a lil pregnant? SO DO I these days lol.

2906847, looking extremely lesbian-ish.
Posted by yul_bammer, Fri Oct-24-14 11:07 AM
you know the thing that nobody will admit is he sounds like shit now too.
i remember that roy hargrove album in 2007 he appeared on.

he sounded sluggish, old and at times like a less interesting version of cee-lo.

that's what he sounds like now too.

he doesn't know how to diminish his weaknesses.

at this point the best way a d'angelo show could sound would be him at the piano playing acoustic.

and i said the same thing in 2010 (nearly 5 fucking years ago).

i honestly think he should just retire - go into real estate in VA or something.
2906851, now with added homophobia!
Posted by shockzilla, Fri Oct-24-14 11:17 AM
2906954, thought he sounded good at that 'Brothers In Arms' BK show w/Quest
Posted by Bombastic, Fri Oct-24-14 08:27 PM
especially on that intro 'Tell Me If You Still Care' S.O.S. Band cover where he attempts to mimic both the male/female vocal on each verses.

Then again that was just him seated with Quest on drums so maybe he didn't have to push vocally.

Can't really comment on what he sounds like in his live shows with a full band because I don't care about D enough to hear how he sounds doing 15 year old songs on fuzzy bootlegs from Australia or Sweden.

2907223, RE: who are those incredible background singers?
Posted by Vhien, Mon Oct-27-14 02:19 AM
Jermaine Holmes, Charles Middleton, and Kendra Foster (she tours with the P-Funk All-Stars) are the background singers for D'Angelo's AUS/NZ SoulFest stint.
2908011, man they are soo dope
Posted by chinyre, Sat Nov-01-14 12:31 PM

i need d' to come to Cali sometime soon
2906987, not to repeat myself, but let the man/singers in general be fat
Posted by GumDrops, Sat Oct-25-14 02:54 AM
jesus.

if he wants to be as fat as biggie and luther combined, should it really matter? i dont see anyone hating gregory porter for being more than a bit chubby. ok, he probably never did a video naked but the point is that its okay to be fat and be a singer. maybe more so in R&B than any other genre, in fact.

i cant believe anyone cares what a fucking tmz report has to say about dangelos weight.
2906997, he can be Solomon Burke size for all I care
Posted by Bombastic, Sat Oct-25-14 05:16 AM
I don't think TMZ really even knows who dude is, I don't think any actual fan cares about his weight.

I personally harbor him no ill will either way but I'd say the acrimony for D'Angelo amongst some R&B/Soul fans probably stems from the fact that he hasn't put out any music in this century yet.
2907287, *eyeroll*

and then shit like this headline fan the flames.

ugh.

let the man be.
