I just subscribed to the massappeal playlist of it, just so I don't miss anything. The last few though, seems like they're bending the assumed rules. Dudes are like "Nah, I don't wanna do anything with this one, I know it too well." The earlier ones, dudes would make due with all 3 records. 88 Keys is a great example, cuz he picked that Steve Martin record.

"entertaining".

He ask to be on there, so I'm now guessing that his interest in being included was more about the screen time and less about showing his skill.

Def. the weakest outcome I've seen thus far.

*Exception goes to Apollo Brown, for chopping solely in WinXP.

Not sure if actually planned out his venture or just didn't care but it looks like he's the kind of producer who needs a few days to make a dope beat & not on the spot.

He's beat wasn't bad but not up to par to what he's done beat-wise.

I was expecting the final joint to be a bit more soulful but that shit is dope regardless.

Do you realize how much dope music hasn't been made from these cats and Outkast?

I feel like Kast going in their own direction production-wise held them back a bit.

Dre's need to be different and need to be unique became a priority over quality. And that's not to say all records that Kast produced weren't dope but the more production they handled, the more they declined.

Imagine if they just stuck with ONP leading the way with production.
2949089, I don't take that deal.
Posted by JFrost1117, Fri Oct-30-15 08:15 PM

>Imagine if they just stuck with ONP leading the way with

That's too many songs from ATLiens, Aquemini, Stank, and Idlewild that are drastically different, or don't exist at all.

Pure heat.

**edit**

I'm curious why the records he selected were obscured since the other artists usually reveal the stuff they pick out. Interesting.

like none other. That vid proves he's one of the last from that era of true neck-snapping producers skilled in sampling who killed in during the 90's. I remember seeing Large digging at Beat Street records in the East Village here in NYC a few years back, it was good inspiration for when I was searching for my own stack.
2950959, Mad Scientist At It Again
Posted by Dj Joey Joe, Fri Nov-27-15 01:57 AM
Large Professor did what I expected, he's never been a let down, I remember X-Tra P. brought his SP1200 to CMFamalam Show, and was loading and playing beats live back in Feb. 1999 and he was show hyped then.

I've always liked his production and this doesn't disappoint, I liked how he sampled the last record but didn't care for it but still found a way to fit it in like a puzzle; and then calling up Tradegy to spit a freestyle was nothing but icing on the cake.

His beat is one of the best but I still think Erick Sermon was the best to do Rhythm Roulette so far.

2966146, Havoc's Beat Was Cool
Posted by Dj Joey Joe, Thu May-19-16 06:18 PM
I think Havoc could've came with some better heat, infact he had some hi-hats on the track then took 'em off.

Also I noticed he only listened to one album instead of going thru all three before sampling, I'm not going to front General Johnson & Chairmen Of The Board old stuff got some soul heat on them and didn't need to go to another record to make some beats but that's the purpose of Rhythm Roulette is to use all three records.

Posted by wisecracker, Sun May-29-16 01:43 PM
They both seemed like they were having a really good time. I like how KRIT went so far as to rap over it and make a new joint on the spot. That's gotta have been a first on the show.

easy mo bee would be dope.

legends like pete rock, q-tip, premier would be good to see.

i'd love to see a proper one with damu the fudgemunk cause of the way he layers samples. Dudes like RJD2 would be good in that regard too - those with interesting techniques.
2966744, I've been inspired by the majority of them.
Posted by JFrost1117, Mon May-30-16 09:40 PM
I think the big name people that have already done it need to spread the word to their peers to let them know that it could be fun, and it's good exposure. Hell, just say "Nas owns Mass Appeal" and be done with it.

I've seen Havoc on a tear of making beats live since his episode aired.
2966745, Kev Brown Already Have A Few Beatmakin' Videos Up
Posted by Dj Joey Joe, Mon May-30-16 09:41 PM
I know Kev's process and I already know he will do a great job with no matter what he picks to sample.

I rather see a few not-so-well-known producers do the show, especially some of the west coast blap producers like Dibia$e and what not.

I'm just tired of seeing well known producer take one out of three records, make a beat, and call it the day, I want a kat who doesn't think he can get away with just using one record and got something to prove to others.

Once I heard the break I was like "oh snap he got some heat right from the bat to chop up", nope he didn't even touch it, then the cuban dance joint (talking about "I don't mess with Bodega music") and that probably had some heat since he liked to slow down his samples with listening, but no he went with Al Green. smh.

2968272, Maybe RR Should Start Making Them Pick "ONE" Record
Posted by Dj Joey Joe, Fri Jun-24-16 08:32 AM
What's the point of picking three records if all they're going to do is make a beat from each one or just one record instead of making a one beat from all three?

Dahi wasn't bad, I liked how he made a joint from those records but...yeah what I said in the sentence above.

2968282, i think that's the thing that displays the true skill
Posted by liveguy, Fri Jun-24-16 11:22 AM
when cats make 3 beats, at least it shows their prolific ability...

When a cat makes one beat off only one sample and leaves the other records alone, in my mind, they are conceding, and that's a L....

When a cat makes a beat actually using all three records in some form or fashion, they are showing TRUE SKILL.....

That's how I gauge them joints.....
2968311, Agreed.
Posted by JFrost1117, Sat Jun-25-16 02:13 AM
Even at my novice level, I can make 3 separate beats from 3 records. There haven't been any steadfast rules, but the idea was always to make 1 beat from 3 records.

I'm still thankful for everyone that does this show, though.

I'd love to hear rappers tell stories about this dude, but I have a feeling others have too much love for him and his beats to want to do him dirty.

It appears he's a bit of an off the wall type of cat. Peep how much of his attire has his own 45 King logo on it; it appears he had some armband wallet type contraption as he was walking to the record store.

His drums are on point, can listen to them solo, but his sample choice is just okay, his use of his keys are better than the sample chops, once again another producer doesn't make a beat from all three records but just two separate beats from two records; that's not challenging at all.

2989954, It's not cheating
Posted by Sleepy, Mon May-08-17 10:27 AM
It really depends on how you flip the sample. A good chop is always appreciated. They don't really have much of a choice with what they get. I like the crazy records the best.

It's only cheating if you choose from off the wall (like Mayer & Jake)

2992593, I like both beats he made.

The first one with the weird sample was better tho, there's prolly more heat on that album too.

Both of those beats would sound good with Flatbush Zombies on them.

I just began the trial of Sample last night. I need more time with it, but it's not bad. Purists might hate, but I envy a kid who starts out with this.

I keep up with his production and outside of his stuff with Aloe Blacc he doesn't do much soul work.

...beat was dope AF, as expected. Wish Strong Arm Steady was still a thing so they could kill it.

2993563, Overall
Posted by Numba_33, Wed Jul-19-17 04:00 PM
I do wonder how much time these producers actually spend listening to the records they pick up. They way the videos are presented, it's assumed the records are picked up and the beats are created the same day; I wonder if the producers are given a good stretch of time to sit down with the records without the Mass Appeal cameras on.
2993571, I think they get as much time as they want during that 1 day.
Posted by phemom, Wed Jul-19-17 07:15 PM
When I watch people like Hi-Tek,Organized Noize or David Banner's eps it looks like they spent hours on they shit.

I don't think every producer is built to making a beat off top like that and we see it in real time.

I'd bet it's the producers themselves that don't take the time to listen to the whole record and find heat and instead be listening to track 1 or 2 and go from there.
2993565, So much better than the Maschine ON THE SPOT videos
Posted by Cold Truth, Wed Jul-19-17 04:23 PM
If you’ve never seen this nonsense, it’s when “________ producer makes a beat ON THE SPOT!” …. Using premade loops with which they’ve been supplied.

Plus, half the time it seems like it’s something laughable, like Baby Bash producer makes a beat ON THE SPOT and it’s a guy with, like 2 baby bash credits from 07 and the “ON THE SPOT!” Beat is anchored by some premade Spanish guitar lick and obnoxiously large handclap combo used in the BB record to begin with.

I only watch them because I'm a content junkie but man... some of those are terrible.

Rhythm roulette is straight for the most part though.

As a fun aside, the entertainment factor can be high because some of these cats are clearly suburban dudes with outlandishly cartoonish, swagged out personas that come across like if the characters from Madagascar had a Freaky Friday bodyswap experience with a suburban human.
2993567, "Such n such producer" is some real, true life fuckshit.

Quite quite impressive. The confidence and open mindedness he started out with served him well since I've heard too many of these producers sneer at disco records before the needle even hits the groove of the vinyl on these videos.

Someone educate me; the section below the normal records stack where Mr. Porter selected this record from; are those areas for dollar bin less in demand type records?

Posted by Garhart Poppwell, Tue Aug-15-17 05:15 PM
I don't have a problem with the looping, a dope loop is a dope loop, but you don't get props for going out of your way to suck the life out of the sample and add shit drums and patterns to it.

2994466, exactly....the records he pulled all had that fie..
Posted by rorschach, Wed Aug-16-17 03:46 AM
How do you pull a Bill Withers record and a Phyllis Hyman record....and still come up with trash.

There have been RRs where the producers spitshined some basic sample into a diamond....then we have this. This was as bad as the Mac Miller one.

2994467, it kind of looks like he just wanted to be done with it ASAP
Posted by bearfield, Wed Aug-16-17 03:59 AM
he's been making media appearances promoting ...something lately and this was likely another stop for him. my estimation of this disaster of an episode was that his management signed him up for it and he took the shortest route out of there by using the first thing he heard in the laziest and quickest way possible. the cringey hubris at the end of the episode was nice bonus

in his defense he's not really much of a sampler. in fact i don't think i've ever heard him sample before so i don't even know why he was on this series to begin with
2994472, I wouldn't expect him to be proficient at sampling
Posted by Garhart Poppwell, Wed Aug-16-17 08:34 AM
because doing it properly takes a keen ear and a skillset exclusive to the art itself. He has neither so I can't hold it against him. The posturing is quite telling, either as a way to save face or an overall lack of understanding of what makes sampling unique.
3003463, Booo, but he made Lil Wayne's "London Roads"...

The producers are compelled to use Serato - so you don't see the way they would make a beat by themselves per say. Although it still appears to be in their own studio.

So its still an advertisement, just not as overt.

I don't like!

3003360, That's Because Nobody Is Following The So-Called Rules
Posted by Dj Joey Joe, Fri Mar-30-18 11:13 PM
It was suppose to be about a producer picking three records and making "one beat" with "all three" records, but instead kats are making one beat for each record they sample from.

Most the beats been lame and so has the creativity has been lost too, a few people made some good ones but didn't really follow the rules, the ones who did follow the rules was doing nice but the creators of the show been letting anybody do what they want lately, and please stop with them letting a rapper rap over the beat as soon as it's done, that's getting tired too.
