Buck deserves the props for hearing and mixing it like he did

2891613, LMAO...look what i found. beat was meant for Foxy.
Posted by MISTA MONOTONE, Wed Jul-09-14 07:34 AM
and she initially said it was the worst beat she'd heard in her life. LMAO.

http://www.complex.com/music/2011/04/interview-buckwild/i-got-a-story-to-tell#gallery

Buckwild: “That was originally meant for Foxy. Tone from Trackmasters picked the beat for Foxy, and Foxy heard it, then she said, ‘It’s the worst beat I heard in my life.’ But you can’t knock it because Foxy’s album is so dope and has so many hits on it. So fast forward to next year. Biggie does the song, Foxy comes in, she hears it, and goes, ‘Big, this got to be the best record on your album.’ And then I called Tone and said, ‘Yo, this the same beat I gave Foxy. I thought you said she didn’t like it.’ Tone was just like, ‘Man, don’t pay attention to her.’

“Big would call for beats. We would go to Brooklyn to get Big beats. Or he would say, ‘Yo, I’m going to send Cease here, drop off the beats to him.’ He did the foundation of the record before I came in, but he did the outro, and other layers when I was there. Big knows how he wants to sound, but he makes sure the producer’s also cool with it. He’ll be like, ‘Yo, let me know if you like the way it sounds. Because that’s your job.’

“I worked with Big on Tone’s album and I did couple other things with Big like commercials and several unreleased joints. Even working with him in the studio, I can say it’s easy because you’re communicating with an artist who isn’t acting like he knows everything. The people who were most humble and the easiest to work with, came out to be the best. And they were Biggie, Jay-Z, and Nas. Some of these dudes who thought they knew the most, ended up failing the most.”
2936717, RE: But to be fair...
Posted by MUATA, Fri Jul-03-15 12:18 PM
I heard an early version of that beat about a year after BIG's album was released, and it sounded nothing like the final version. It was dope for sure (which is why it was being passed around ON TAPE in the dorms), but the Hitmen definitely added that sheen to it by the time it was released on Life After Death (check the credits - there's co-production). I do not blame Foxy for not seeing the potential up front, and not recognizing it on the back end.

Funny you posted this story, though. That beat was the first one I thought of when I saw the original post.

I actually dug that album even though Tone is corny as hell.
2890576, you know what?
Posted by Mageddon, Mon Jun-30-14 08:59 AM
Tone was actually one of my favorite rappers during that period.

I understand why people thought he was corny. I didn't mind the lightheartedness, and enjoyed his guest appearances on tracks by Chubb Rock, Nas, Louie Rankin...etc.

But yeah, 98 is banger. Also liked the title track a lot. I need to revisit the album.

2892897, Hells Yeah The Drums On That Beat Was Killer
Posted by Dj Joey Joe, Fri Jul-18-14 01:14 PM
This is what I'm talking about when I mean loud snapping kicks & snares, this beat is just boom-bap all the way, I remember when my cousin turn me on to this 12inch, cause I knew who the rapper was and knew Lover Tone was wack so I never bought it when I saw it but when he told me about who produced the "98" track and let me listen to it, I was floored and went the next day to find a copy of that 12inch, took me one week but mane just to have the instrumental to it was dopeness; after that I started checking for anything with his name on it, and I didn't even know till later that he was down with DITC.

I didn't even know about this remix until 2 years after it came out & the funny thing about it is that I owned the soundtrack it came off of too (Substitute Soundtrack) but only cause it's not listed as a remix but I should've still listened to the entire soundtrack first.

This isn't a favorite cause of the production but cause the rappers, Fat Joe & A-Bless was spittin' hard on this joint, but I do like the epic horns on this though.

This was one of Buckwild crews on Staten Island when he use to date a girl from there as well, he has produced almost half their album but only a few songs came out though.

I posted both songs cause both was off the same 12inch and both are dope.

Found out that the beat was used for Rhymester. Not sure if the Granddaddy IU joint is legit or a mash up or if the Rhymester joint is a case of Buck reselling the beat because it was for a foreign market. Here it is:
