Beatmaking? Yeah it's all downhill from here. I've been thinking about waking up at 5 am to make beats every morning but it hasn't happened yet.

Posted by herbiehowsermc, Sun Apr-13-14 08:12 AM
Yeah sometimes, but really that's usually the time that my wife wants to hang out because she's at home with the boy all day and I'm off at work. Also, even if I have time I don't really use it because I'm usually burned out and just want to zone out and watch TV. Really, I'm at my lowest level productivity wise after the sun goes down. Unless I'm staying up all night and eating a 2nd dinner, but I definitely can't sleep all day with a kid.

Check out this quote from Questo about J-Dilla. I wish I could do this so bad...

"Dilla keeps regular business hours for music creating (7am-5pm). (which struck me odd for i was also in my 4th year of co-piloting D’Angelo’s sophomore Voodoo LP in which we’d START at around 6pm and end at like 9am) like that struck me ODD. like i am WHOLLY committed to music making. but i got IN the music business so that i can sleep in late. this dude gets up at 6am and has about 4 complete MIND BLOWING beats ready before 9am?! who does that?!"

i have been chillin. probably listened to this whole original song in the background while i been working around the house or 'online' n shit about 5-6 times. i haven't even listened for anything to sample yet or even listened to the joint intently. it's been on like when you go to a kind of nice and cool dining establishment with your lady on a friday night, and the jazzy shit is in the background playing while you are nibbling on the fresh italian bread sticks that just came out the oven... waiter asks what ya'll are drinking, and you tell him, shit, you already know. something strong and cool. meanwhile the music's still on in the background n shit ; complimentin the fuckn mood.

that's how this original song has been playing while i've been online a few times.

but i'm about to start studying this beiitch . i just haven't had enough of myself to give to doing this and spending time with it yet. i'm waiting for that little light bulb to go off tho..

Thanks, I think it worked out well too, actually had drums and everything for that - went and deleted it for no reason at all. Stupid.

>your chops on here are crisp. you dig deep in the samples
>and create sounds which is a art.

Word! I really try n make something else outa whatever source im looking at. Its an integrity thing. I can listen to other producers loops-with-drums for years, praising them as the shit, but when it comes to my own stuff, to feel good bout it, I hafta make a whole nother foundation (almost) from scratch... Weird contradiction...

>the drums got a good slow bounce to them.
>
>and i like how you faded the beat out with the vinyl losing

Thats the signature lol.
Tell you a secret thats been naggin me - my prefered audio editor always has a slight pitch/speed up before slowing it all the way down, and I never got around to adjusting that envelope. Lazy.

>the beat is good, but i've heard so many banging bangers from
>you i want to hear part 2 submit that crushes this one. i'm

lol and nice touch at the end to slooowwww everything down. i was slightly obsessed with doing that on random occasions in my beats last year. its amazing how just that one touch of quirk can add so much to a song. cos here we are talkin about the shit. good stuff.

the part where the beat comes in at 0:36 - 0:57 is where i thought the beat got really got funky. that little segment right there reminded of some JZone sht.

in terms of the over-all remix, adding the metal face on the track tied the joint together nicely. &that's the beauty of vocs. liked the chops at the end to close out the track .,

sofar impressed by everyones chops, not an easy thing to do with such a lengthy sample source. but it's making me not anticipate the extra work i gotta now put in to match this kinda dopeness.

The idea of having repeated short chops for a foundation is dope for adding depth/richness that the main chops cant, but I actually liked the section at 1:20 where its the lil longer chops that gets the spot!!! Real dope section right there...

The lil quotables sprinkled around is a nice detail too...

If I was to point my finger, Id say the drums is all snap and no bottom but thats in the mix, and can easily be done!

Also, the Riding Hi vox is REAL loud in the mix, but hey, whatever!

All in all, SOLID work, props on the "mosaic" feel!

Thanks for the feedback. yeah, the drums are not eq's at all! I got to a point where I was like "I've used too much time on this beat already, just gonna drop it!"

I think this is the first one I've posted before, but I've tried before on past ones. I usually tinker with them so long that it gets too late to post it, so I just dropped this soon as I felt decent about it.

sounds like the drums were sampled and chopped straight off the breakbeat. no extra butter or effects on em.

i like the short chops and melody you built the track with. i also dig the vocal sprinkles you put all thru the beat. the break where the beat drops out at 2:22 was player too.

this is a raw cut right here. reminds me when i had my first mpc2000xl, and it was about straight putting a piece of wax on a turntable, running it thru a dj mixer, straight into the MPC, and chopping the shit out of the samples , being creative, and recording it straight out of the mpc to a cd. with no extra. plus i see you with the b.ig, az, the female sining,& redman vocs

2880704, took a minute to warm up but then hit a sweet groove
Posted by araQual, Mon Apr-14-14 04:13 AM
i'm a drum guy first n foremost. i play drums n percussion but i started beatmaking around about the same time (2000/2001). which doesnt mean im picky, just means ill always have sumthn to say about the drums. in this case, the drum sounds and structure themselves are all dope, i woulda just tinkered with the mix some more, maybe beefed it up (lazy guy talk for more bass via the EQ), and with like a teaspoon of reverb. just a general phattening up.
otherwise, i didnt get bored for the entire duration (typically the entries are shorter than 3mins so if u can make somethin longer than that and not lose attention and cause steady head-noddage, then its an achievement).
digs it.

TJ!

Glad to hear you rockin'!

I just peeped your joint.

My fav. apsect is how well your vocal samples fit and flow with the beat. It really takes it up a notch and takes this from just a beat to more like an instrumental from a full song.

I feel like an artist could just fill in the blanks.
Im not great with using vocal samples so I might have to jack you and Torch for the next go round and see if i can incorporate that in some type of way next time.

Nice

Im not sure how I feel bout the contrast between the machinery drums and the dusty acoustic samples, but since your drums are so low in the mix, it really aint a problem here!

Love all the small breaks, really a dynamic exp all the way thru - layering is nice too...

+1 on the creative flip!!!

this has a straight little groove to it. you used quite a few different chops on here and came with something kind of tuff.

got the sampled bass for the bassline. piano chop with the delay. reverse keys... and the sampled hi hat added a little gritty background ambiance.

this beat u did has a whole different flavor and character to it then anything else i've heard in a minute.

you came with your chop game on this one too. several folks did so far.

but the groove on this is dope. the levels sound good. i like the way you got the vocal spices sprinkled in. the drums are going hard, and you got busy with the different sampled elements. lots of folks are rocking with the vinyl crackle in the beat these days and it's all good.

the coolest shit on here is when the beat drops into the main groove at 0:46 and keeps riding tho. you freeked it at 1:25 to when you brought the xylophone sounds in .

this is a dope joint. u freeked it
2880692, Thanks man.

I really appreciate the in-depth feedback. Good to read. Yeah I definitely tried to not make things change up too often (learned that with the Barbara Streisand one last year). I'm trying to find the sweet spot between too long (All my old beats are 5 or 6 minutes) and too short. I guess it depends on the beat, but I feel like this format has worked better than my last few because it's a little bit longer.

Love me some static.

On the real tho - this is the best shit Ive heard from you.

Drums are phat n crisp, sits nice in the mix too!!! Fast paced cymbals sprinkled are DOPE...

The way you utilized the chimes, piano, bass and guitar is extra extra! It all comes across just the way Id like it.

Also, just when I thought I had it figured out for a melodic 90s era boom bap beat, in comes the switch - that hectic, kinda confusing vibe taking it thru the roof!!!

Icing was all the vocal drops - great for variation across the patterns...

Maaan, you really took me by surprise with this one, shit.

Hey Torch, really appreciate the in-depth feedback. Sometimes it's hard to be objective about something I just made. Coming from you it's high praise man.

Yeah I ended up adding the static which was on the Onyx a cappella. (I guess it would qualify as a guilty pleasure in 2014). I thought about making this a remix for Shiftee because the tempo fit without doing anything but decided against it since it was the edited version which is not as good as the reg. version.

All the cymbal work is part of the chops. I didn't really mess with them on their own that much. Although I always make sure they are on beat and don't clash at all by default.

Thanks again man.

You getting any sleep lately? It does get better (or you get used to it, like somebody mentioned above).

2880710, ive been seeing sounds a lot today. this one is a jazzy jungle lol
Posted by araQual, Mon Apr-14-14 04:43 AM
when the bit with all the hats and cymbals goin off at once comes on, feels like i'm in the wilderness and there's an urgency to everything. then it all kinda calms down as i make my way out towards the end of the track.
the vocal samples were ill, spesh like how u brought em in and out at random points. made it feel dynamic, like there WAS a vocal track goin on but it was kinda soaked in reverb and in the background. but still there. beat structure gave it a funky edge. and the chops were on point. again, chop game has been on 9000 thus far.

2881323, The drums move this thing along nicely
Posted by ToeJam, Fri Apr-18-14 08:48 AM
The cymbal roll thing gets a little chaotic, and I think a bassline (even following the lead of what notes are on the sample) would put the whole thing in a pocket more.

Good use of those guitar notes and that little bending note in particular, they are the heart of this beat.
2881532, Thanks, I appreciate the feedback.
Posted by herbiehowsermc, Fri Apr-18-14 09:42 PM
There actually is a bassline, but I think I messed with it too much. I added some distortion to it and it got a little mushy. I had a first mix without the distortion and it sounded pretty good. I thought I was done, but I had mixed the whole beat on headphones and my kick was not cutting it. So I added new sounds and reworked the drums and also adjusted the bassline. I thought the bassline was pretty strong in the beginning stages so I could just do another mix and fix it.

did you manage to create this from that??? You on some shit man...

Always trippin me out with the spaceeness!!!

All the chops are feeling like they came down with the cold, nose all running, all the while everything is happening underwater lol.

Random phonefiltered chops poppin up outa nowhere? I dunno what to say.

I wish I had that dynamic and the nerve to use it, not giving a fuck.

Love the slow bounce on this - Id want a Bun B feature on here...

"Fuck the beat, I can make a thousand of em - in my sleep" lol...

Yeah. You came correct with the creativity once again man, props!!!

Didn't get it at first but it crept up on me. (also got it right away on the 2nd listen). I really dig the abstract feel of this. The vocal samples work great. Very random but they all work. Love the delay on everything. I'm a delay junkie myself. Very nice.

samples so mangled i cant make heads or tails of it lol, and that is in no way a criticism or a negative comment. i luv it more when i cant recognise the sample, and this one does a number on it and becomes the dark mood of this track. all the other random elements u got goin work well as counterpoints. overall unique and totally recognisable as ur style.

bout to peep the 2nd one.

I see u on the jokes. U have a saavy listening ear... I actually never do this... But i happened to write that rhyme acapella on a sheet of paper with no beat. It was sitting on the table, and i made this joint, noticed the paper, and it fit. 98% of the time i can only rap a verse to the beat i wrote it to

This one is very dope as well. I love the loose drums and the pattern with the first snare hitting early. They drum sounds hit very hard. Love the pauses in their as well on some analog button pushing style. The bassline and chops work great and make a great melody. Very dope beat.

u still got a stash of these older beats layin around? would be cool to hear a mixtape or sumthn. i rekn beatheads would dig the shit out of em. intro urself with ur old style n then BOOM, hit em with ur current nxt level shit.
i can see u were goin for the Illadelph kinda sound and its pretty much on point, tho it ended up soundin a lot more Fantastic Vol. 2 Dilla than anything else. either way, never a bad thing.

Man. Thats a hell of a compliment dude.

I do have quite a bit of older recordings that are better than this, but i vowed to myself to not put them out unless somebody allows me to make a few projects and put them out on a indie label. Til then, the new releases will be the new. But i'll try to have a couple with this flavor on the nxt project
2881327, Hey
Posted by ToeJam, Fri Apr-18-14 09:00 AM
Like the drums, like the general feel. The live shaker you added in doesn't really mesh that well, maybe it's a mixing thing? Maybe because it's the only live element and needs to be dirtied up.

Good chopping, creative work. I like the idea and placement of the drops, but it is a little sloppy where the beat cuts in and out.

Werd.
2882347, RE: Hey
Posted by judono, Wed Apr-23-14 01:07 PM
Nice comments. I agree with the shaker comment. I wish i got it more 8bit or dirtier sounding. Also agree about the drops. I recorded a version without the drops and the filtered bassline not so loud. Its better. Black thought would sound dope as hell on this beat
2881770, HOT shit J!!!
Posted by _Torchbaras, Sun Apr-20-14 05:29 AM
This was how you rocked back in the day, Id want them basement tapes you sittin on... This one right down my alley!

- Drums are sloppy, dusty and bitcrushed to perfection IMHO.

- Lopassed line leaves a permanent mark, and thats a hard one to accomplish - dope as hell...

- Vibraphone, piano tingles and the short horns all fits like a glove!!!

- Lil drops outs and scratch fx be the icing, and its a sweet one at that lol...

Amazingly dope man. Turned UP the heat w this one...
2882348, RE: HOT shit J!!!
Posted by judono, Wed Apr-23-14 01:12 PM
Thank u very much dude. I know i need to mix my sht up, so i took it back a little bit. I have a stash of shit, but noone will hear it unless somebody lets me put out a few projects. I will be the new madlib, but with rhymes... Haha.

I have a better version o this beat minus the drops and with the filtered bassline not so loud. I fucked up the beat a little because that bassline was a little too loud.

Always appreciate u checkn out my material and coming thru with the notes.
