2875896, That's such a silly position. The track is good, but I'd rather not
Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Mon Mar-17-14 02:04 PM
bother without a full album? Huh?

The world of music is better off with a few good mixtapes and a few hot singles from him then nothing at all.

On one hand, I have NEVER had one of these new rappers hit me the way Jay E hit me when I discovered his sh!t.

Never. Kendrick was close. Actually, Zeroh was pretty close too.

Elucid maybe the closest- and he is having the career I would have hoped for Jay E in terms of eclectic beat selection, releases, subject matter, etc.

Jay E has it all- voice, flow, lyrics, concepts, versatility of subject matter...

It kills me we haven't had an actual album yet.

On the other hand, sh!t is corny at this point. What's most corny about it is the cats who make excuses for him like they know him personally.

Nah, he ain't some mysic Jedi who operates on his own timeline teaching us patience (lol at that sh!t)

Nah, he and Jay Z aren't looking for "the single"

Nah, he hasn't given fans enough through 2 CDRs worth of songs.

Nah, he isn't locked up in some secluded studio perfecting it.

No. He's either lazy or SCARED. Or Both. These days, I lean more towards the latter.

So this is his 2014 song. 2013 was the full version of Dear Moleskin, right? And 2012 was that trash track with Prodigy I think.

One song per year. Wow.

Another tangent- I do wonder how much of the Jay Electronica thing is timing related.

He was basically one of the first blog rappers, no? Came out of no where, rapping over Dilla beats....

and we all had time to track each song down and dissect them. Listen to them over and over.

These days, each month brings a new rapper pretty much. Anyone getting that type of love?

I guess maybe they don't deserve it?

2875920, that ?uest post on black genius was interesting
Posted by forgivenphoenix, Mon Mar-17-14 03:17 PM
The main point he made was the black genius is unique in that the survival defense mechanism that borne the genius is often times just that. A response to guide someone thru life-threatening times, not something that realistically can be sustained over the length of a career.

He talked about artists such as Lauryn Hill and D'Angelo who are gifted in their own right, but for whatever reason their careers were never as impactful or as awe-inspiring as alot of fans and other people thought they might turn into.

There's a common thread between geniuses of the post-Golden Age hip-hop / R&B scene in that the artistry and purity of their music was truly remarkable, but it seems that the burden of having to embody authenticity while being a recording artist was too much for them or anyone really to handle.

Lauryn Hill had a great run as one of the stars of The Fugees. Regarded as one of the best lyricists of her time, and released a remarkable solo album. And since is more known for battles with the IRS and decisions that show a sense of instability.

D'Angelo was thought of as the best singer of his time. Released a great debut. Released one of the most well-regarded albums of the period it was released in. Had one of the best reviewed concert tours of its time. Hasn't released an album in over 15 years and has had issues with substance abuse.

Mos Def, probably the last great lyricist since Jay Elec hit the scene. Had a great debut album. An ever greater sophmore album. He's released some great music and dabbled in acting since, but there are many people who thought he would have a legendary career.

Jay Elec is probably the last lyricist who showed a sense of mastery and remarkable genius since Mos Def. Lyricist who seemed both a throwback to the Golden Age and also had a sense of emotional vulnerability that was refreshing and modern. Made music over interesting beats and his music was met with anticipation that hadn't been scene since maybe Wu-Tang or Snoop or Nas. Has only released a handful of songs and no official release.

Part of the issues are probably the fact that they all carried the burden of being a 'savior' of their music to some degree and to uplift a large underappreciated part of society. Hip-hop since The Message and probably before had a deep interest in an artist's authenticity. It just doesn't seem that an artist can be a great artist, a great human being, and a great salesperson, and be true to themselves to the degree that audiences want.

Also, while I'm sure all of these artists had mentors and people who wanted the best for them, they didn't have anyone probably to really confide in and shelter them and help them develop as human beings outside of their music.

As a fan of Jay Elec's music, I selfishly wanted him and his career to have an impact on music and myself. If only to have that 'I was able to live in a time like that.' memory.

Part of me wishes he had someone or a group of people who could guide him so that we could have more of his music. I don't know him, but he seemed like a good enough man and wanted success for him. But the man with some sense of history knows it simply will not happen.

At this point, I'm just crying over spilled milk. Selfishly disappointing. But I wish him the best.
2875807, The only obligation he has to release music is to his label though.
Posted by self_ish, Mon Mar-17-14 07:54 AM
That's if he even still has a deal at this point. And that's not me making excuses for dude, 'cause no excuses are necessary. If he's sabotaging his own career, so be it. But it's not like we all paid for a subscription to the Jay Electronica Fan Club with a promise of an album release within a year or two of said purchase. If he puts an album out, I'll buy it. If not, life goes on. Just like it has for how many ever years it's been since people started caring about his music. *shrug*
